“OK stay and very nice staff but difficult to love the building”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

If you're breaking your C2C walk at Clay Bank Top then you're a bit short of options for places to stay and you may well end up in Great Broughton.

Note that the hotel were very nice and cheerful about offering us lifts to and from the walk. If like us you decline the lift please don't make the mistake of walking down the rather horribly busy road - you can do much better on public footpaths with a bit of map ingenuity and a tolerant attitude towards slightly overgrown paths.

The building feels a bit like it's grown too large for its origins. The main building is old and rather lovely but the hotel has expanded in a way that feels both rather corporate and very tired, and not really in keeping with its lovely location. Our room reminded me a little of military accommodation albeit in an upmarket way (like an officers' mess); we found it very unatmospheric and the lighting unattractive. The place was warm, and the staff were friendly and mostly efficient. The dining room is quite nice (it's in the old part of the building) and the food was OK but not memorable. I was a bit surprised that my bringing the waiter's attention to a soaking wet seat had no apparent effect since it hadn't been dealt with in any way before we left. Nice beer!

Please don't get me wrong - this is NOT a horrible hotel: it is perfectly comfortable and worked well for our one-night C2C stay, and it has nice staff. I wouldn't rush back there or, more realistically, if I did I would enquire carefully about the nature of my room. I'd so love more atmosphere and character.

Please note that my wife wants to rate it 2 but it's my account so it gets 3!

Room Tip: Ask carefully about your specific room and its character.

Stayed in this hotel for two nights just before Christmas. Good base for visiting family and in a nice village with a couple of good pubs within walking distance. Staff were friendly; breakfast was good (didn't have dinner at the hotel); room was comfortable but a little dusty behind the desk and the bed although comfortable could do with being a king size rather than just a double. Bathroom was large and functional.
Would stay again if bed size increased.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 12 on the ground floor which was very quiet

Stayed here the weekend before Xmas for a family party and had a great weekend. The food was fantastic both the buffet at the party and the lunch on the Sunday i would highly recommend this to anyone. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The only little niggle i would have is the water pressure in the shower was poor but it would not deter me from coming back, i would definitely return when visiting family in the future.

This hotel I stayed at in December 2013, I was in Room 23 (Family Room but only 2 of us). There was cobwebs above the curtains at the window. Lots of dirt/dust "peeking" out of the top of the radiator. The bed, although comfortable, needs some attention. The Desk Light seemed dangerous, it kept going out, but would come back on if it was moved. All this said, they have ethernet for the WiFi and that was absolutely brilliant. Breakfast was very good, but I did suggest that they could have porridge available - it is winter after all.
Overall, an average stay, perhaps a little over priced by about £10 on comparison to other hotels I have stayed at.

I stayed at the Wainstone Hotel, on business for one night in November 2013, upon arrival I was meet with a friendly welcome, checked in nice and quick, and everything was explained with a nice friendly smile.
My room was number 24, at the back of the hotel, the view was not brilliant, but the room was cosy and clean, there was plenty of tea and coffee, also some nice biscuits, and to my surprise a fruit bowl, which was a nice touch.
I had dinner in the bar area, which was nice and warm and friendly, with a mix of guests and local, the food was excellent, with lots of choice, and best of all real ale served off the pump.
I had a good nights sleep, my only moan was the bath plug did not fit properly but it was not the end of the world, the shower was just great, with really nice complementary toiletries.
The breakfast was the best bit, all cooked fresh with local ingredients, really set me up for the day.
Check out was nice and simple, and I was waved ion my way with a smile, and there was even complementary car winder scrapers and deicer, nice touch.

Packhorse has a high standard for accommodation on the Coast to Coast. We understand that many rooms at the Wainstones have been refurbished but ours hadn't and it wasn't quite up to the high standard of other accommodation on the way. A fairly standard holel room. It may be worth asking about refurbished rooms if booking.

Having said that the staff were smiling, friendly and happy and the food was good in the restaurant. They cheerfully picked us up from Clay Bank Top on the Coast to Coast thus saving an additional road walk and returned us there in the morning.

Look out for the big wooden owl in the garden. He's great.

A Wainstone staff member picked us up from the Clay Bank parking area and from then on the hotel's service was friendly and attentive. The selection of beers in the pub was excellent. The kitchen was out of the rabbit and grouse special, but the lamb was an excellent substitute.
