“Quantity above quality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

This is an old coaching inn with a good 'olde worlde' ambience and had a good reputation in the locality. Basically you have to mind the gap between the attractive menu and the food that arrives on the table. The meal got off to a bad start; a pleasant enough crab-stack was served with a stodgy bread roll, while the crab spring roll had a hard, thick shell - an unwelcome homage to the crab, I thought. Likewise the main courses were disappointing given the high promise of the menu; the spinach-filled pork fillet came with an over-roasted cube of belly pork and a baked apple with a dry haggis filling that gave a new meaning to 'hard core'. The flesh of the chicken fillet (with brie and palma ham) was dry, and certainly needed the mushroom sauce as an aid to mastication. It was the vegetables, however, that proved the least successful aspect of the meal. Boiled new (unpeeled) potatoes may be healthy but are unattractive while the mound of mashed swede and carrots were hearty rather than appetising. Oh for something green to alleviate the winter vegetable theme! We concluded that the meal was big on quantity but lacked finesse. Indeed, we thought many of the items were re-heated and looked 'tired' on the plate. The 'gastro-pub' prices did not match the quality and presentation of the ingredients. Could do better.
