“Sold as a beautiful Country House Hotel, it's not!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

We recently friday 04/07/14 atayed at the Willingham House Hotel Cambridgeshire for two nights. I can only say that this Hotel has the AA 4 star rating and it was appauling.
The staff were absent when we arrived at 5pm. The reception was abandoned, we walked around looking for staff only for a man to come out and say"I'm eating" as he walked past me without looking at me.
The only words he said were "what's your name?'" and "you're in room 8". he didn't tell us anything at all or how to get to our room.
The room was shabby, and grotty. The carpet was threadbare and dirty. The towelrail was broken off and was standing behind the bathroom door. This had been the same way for quite a number of weeks, as there is an entry on trip advisor from 3 weeks ago stating the very same problem.
The shower was a dribble i am only 5'4 and i had a problem getting wet, in comparison the hot water in the sink was scalding hot, dangerously.
There was no free plug socket for the kettle, therefore we had to move it to the bedside cabinet to plug it in. The lead was so short it was balancing on the edge of the cupboard. A real danger to children.
The TV came out of the Ark. It was the old tubular type so is blurred and you need to press 3 buttons to get it to come on.
The furniture in the room was ring marked and a disgrace. There are only a small number of rooms in the actual old house, the rest are some considerable distance away in a cheap extension over a school, so we actually looked out onto the sandpit and the children's play area.
The so called "terrace" is not availablke freely to sit on. There is one door to access it and that was in the dining room which is a chinese restaurant at night.
When we returned on our first night the receptionist (the same man) looked at us and turned away, hardly welcoming!
We would never ever stay there again. It is being sold as a traditional country house retreat and yet it is a very shabby, unfriendly, unkempt place.
There is only continental breakfast available and cold meats sit out unrefrigerated.
In reality I would never ever stay there again and neither would I recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Stay at the Orchard Cottage down the road. It was too short notice for us to get in, but we would no...

What a joke this hotel is. Our greeting was 'you're room number x - go up the stairs and just follow the numbers' no offer of case carrying. The only good thing to be said is that the bed was comfy. Now.. what didn't work ...the TV, the shower, the fan in the bathroom (well it did, but was so loud it was like going to the loo with a food mixer), the bar was minimal (not minimalist!) no diet mixers, and as for the breakfast - the only continental part of it was our lovely but careworn waiter. Sliced bread and a toaster to do your own is not what I would expect, NO CROISSANTS! When I wanted to complain the manager had left the building. So glad I won't be staying here again.

Room Tip: DO NOT stay here

On arriving we stood around for 10 minutes, still no staff could be found. I then rang to see if we could check in early. I was told someone would be with me in 5-10 minutes. Eventually the manager arrived. He was very pleasant, and told us if our room wasn't ready he could let us change in another room, and when we returned go to our room. Thankfully our room was ready.
He walked us to our room. On entering we were met by a nice sized, but musty smelling room. He opened the windows, and then went to leave. He asked if we could pay that evening? When asked if we could do it on check out, we were told it would be easier for us to do it that night as it would be very busy in the morning.

On closer inspection the room was very dated, and carpets were worn in places. The dressing table was covered in stains and a bed side table lamp broken.
The bathroom wasn't much better. The extractor fan made a right racket, the towel rail was broken, and the seal around the bath was coming away leaving a prominent gap.

On returning to our room we decided to make ourselves a tea & coffee. The kettle lead wouldn't reach from the socket to the dressing table so I had to move it to the bedside table. Once made both tea & coffee tasted awful! I think the tiny pots of UHT milk was off.

The bed was comfortable, but instead of a duvet there was a throw over a sheet and itchy blanket.
We slept well but when it came to having a shower we had great fun. Eventually I figured how to get the water to come out of the smaller of the 2 shower heads, but it then took sometime to get the water to the right temperature.

On turning the hot tap on the sink I nearly burnt my hand as the water came out straight away boiling hot. Perish the thought of a child doing this.

Next came our "continental breakfast". This consisted of cereal, some cold meat and cheese, fruit, yoghurt and toast, but not a pastry in site! Eventually someone came to ask if we wanted tea or coffee and then returned with a pot of each. Very good, but we then had to hunt out our own milk.

Would we stay here again? Not if we didn't have too.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for a night and wished we stayed longer! It's a large country manor with gorgeous gardens and a lovely view. Our room was a nice size and looked out onto the green, was so pretty. The staff are always on hand, very helpful and friendly. There's a Chinese restaurant on site which is yum! The location is away from the busy bustle, which was perfect for us. If you haven't been here before I'd say give it a go! It's really not expensive for how lovely it is - we have paid more to stay in places that were nowhere near as nice - which is the main thing that surprised us as we assumed cheap prices meant a mediocre stay. We're so glad we found this place, it's a real gem.

Had a great weekend we had a room in the main building it was a huge room over looking the gardens which are lovely . The bedroom had beautiful high ceilings and everything you needed for a comfortable stay eg tea coffee hair dryer flat screen tv etc . The manager greeted us as we entered the building and was very friendly and professional . We had booked into the restaurant which was amazing they have a Chinese chef and everything tasted really good quality . The village itself is lovely with some good pubs also in walking distance . I would recommend this hotel my only point to make would be the breakfast which was good but it's continental and I prefer full English breakfast .We will defiantly return for a break in the future :) lovely hotel .

I thought it was a great place to stay. It was close enough to Cambridge Universities, but you need a car to move around. It was peaceful, but it had all the required facilities. The rooms were spacious, but the pluming was a bit noisy. The personnel were friendly and accommodating, but all the rooms are upstairs which can be a bit hard for the elderly. The gardens are beautiful and they have an old church across the road.
