“Lovely Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

My partner and I arrived at the hotel at 3:55pm on Saturday, and the receptionist was very helpful. When we got the room, it was very clean and tidy. There was a health and safety hazard - we had to boil the kettle on the floor, because the lead wasnt long enough to reach up from the plug socket (which is just above the skirting board) to the top of the dressing table. There were also milk stains on the dressing table where the tea and coffee things were kept, which made it look dirty. The cold tap was loose and moved when you turned it on/off. The shower wasn't powerful enough, due to being scaled up, and I have very thick hair, so it took me an hour to wash it.

The staff were friendly and happy to help, although they could mention that something THEY offer to us at the table is going to charge extra, as we were caught short of money when the manager offered us a glass of wine each on Sunday, so our meal on Sunday night cost more money than we had left over from Saturday. Fortunately, his colleague was understanding about our situation and let us off paying the £3 that we didn't have on us.

The food itself was delicious, although the milk at breakfast on Monday morning tasted like it was out of date, and smelled just bad. This probably owes to the fact that the milk was left out the fridge (which is situated in the kitchen) in a plastic jug on the table where the continental breakfast is held for the 2 hours that they serve breakfast. They do not have the facilities to keep the milk cool in the dining area during breakfast.

All in all, it wasn't a bad experience, just some things that need to be worked on, i.e maintainance and storage arrangements which could have made the experience much much better for us both.

Check in took an age as reception was unattended for almost half an hour. Once completed, the electronic key wouldnt work. Room was nice enough, but the room had no wifi.

The hotel has ample parking and a tiny bar area. Sadly the bar pumps were not working though! The restaurant serves Chinese food which was very good, but breakfast is quite poor being a continental buffet selection with little choice. ( individual wrapped cheese portions, boiled ham)

On the plus side, i spoke to the new manager who i suspect plans a number of improvements. He is aware of the low water pressure and issues with the bar area. My guess is, that he is Egyptian. If this is the case, it wont take long to bring this hotel up to scratch with service that reflects the lovely setting and character of the building.

Would i return? Probably

Staff very kind and helpful, lovely room with windows on two sides, comfortable bed with sheets, which in my view is a big plus point, rather than just a duvet on its own. Breakfast simple and lovely. Evening meal in the Chinese restaurant is perfectly adequate, but there are other good restaurants very near if you need them. Iwould recommend this to everyone who needs to stay in or near Willingham

Room Tip: Number 11 was lovely and quiet

Stayed here reluctantly on business. (Not my choice) pulling up to the hotel it certainly did not live up to the pictures or description. 4 star is a joke! Receptionist could barely understand or speak English. A cockroach or bat was stuck in the reception lights. Room was ok although some strange white stringy stuff was in the toilet. Phone did not work and furniture was stained. Kettle was disgusting it might aswell have not been there. Shower was ok. As I wasn't paying for it I kept shut as it was only a night. Actually the food was ok if you like Chinese. Coke was served warm with 1 ice cube??? Don't order chips. Even their waiter/chef/manager didnt have faith in them. The hotel was cheap but not good value. Don't get the impression they know what they are doing and would agree that it is a very old fashioned Chinese restaurant with rooms. I would recommending a little more and go elsewhere.....anywhere.

stayed here 2 days last week on business. arrived there late in the evening as i had a late appointment. got to my room and bathroom light didn't work so had to use the light above the mirror. next morning shower didn't work so ran the bath which took 25 mins to run. had to boil the kettle on the floor as the cord would't reach which is dangerous. complained to reception on my way out and when i returned everything was fixed. My colleague and i decided to eat in the restuarant that night and everything we ordered was cold. had enough by this point and couldn't wait to check out the next day.
i also think the picture has been airbrushed as the hotel doesn't look half as nice in real life.

Room Tip: dont get room no 10

Stayed in August for one night while visiting family in the area. I thought we got great value for money. Low price for what is a straight forward hotel, but clean and comfortable with lovely gardens and surroundings. The village itself is very nice.

Stayed in the hotel for a weekend break . Room was clean with a view to the garden which was nice and quiet. Room facilities are basic considering it is a 4star hotel. Kettle with tea/coffee is in the room, no hair dryer though. TV was not working very well. Carpets in walkway and hall are stained, breakfast was basic, staff friendly enough. It is well situated to visit places like Cambridge and surroundings. Overall stay was pleasant but grading is overrated and should be reviewed.

Room Tip: Book a room facing the gardens
