“A real gem of a hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2011

I stayed at the March Bank Hotel for 1 night on the 5th June 2011. I had choosen to stay there for no other reason than the location it is in but will certainly stay for longer in future.
From beginning to end I found the staff friendly ,welcoming and they went out of their way to be helpful and the standards of service would put most so-called "big name" hotels to shame.
The hotel has stunning views over the Esk valley and is ideally situated on the border of Scotland and England combining in my opinion the best standards of service of both countries. The evening meal and choice of menu available were exceptional as was the breakfast .The room was spotlessly clean ,decorated to a high standard and very comfortable. I would highly recommend this hotel as a must stay!

Ideal for a peaceful stay in a quiet location. We stayed in a lovely room with a four poster bed. The best thing about our stay was hotel owner Richard's personal attention to detail and his excellent cooking both at dinner and breakfast. The location is great for travellers from the south to Scotland or vice versa.

As soon as we arrived we knew it was going to be an excellent stay with the friendly, welcoming staff there to greet us.
We had a lovely romantic room with a four poster bed with panoramic views over looking the river.
The restaurant was newly referbed and was excellently themed for valentines day (no tack). The food was sublime and could not be faulted! The service was excellent and very helpful.
The hotel is in an excellent location, we went for fabulous walks down by the river and through the woodland.
Overall it was a very relaxed weekend and cant wait to stay again!

We had been looking for a quiet country hotel on our trip back to Scotland and chose the Marchbank after much research on the internet. Richard phoned us as we travelled north to check when we would be arriving and arranged for a dinner table to be ready for us. When we arrived we were greeted on first name terms and all the staff were delightfully friendly and made us feel at home immediately. Room 5 had a lovely four poster bed and super views over the countryside and the nearby river where most of the fish on the menu is caught.

I have stayed in many hotels over the years on business and have to say that dinner was one of the best meals I have ever had. There was a superb choice of local country fare including smoked salmon, trout, venison & wood pigeon medallions in a red wine sauce, sirloin steak with a pepper sauce, lobster thermidore, scallops in garlic soy sauce, and a range of superb desserts, all at reasonable prices and prepared by Richard himself. The staff were all very attentive and cheery to top it all. Breakfast was excellent with either a full English breakfast, omlettes stuffed with salmon, or kippers cooked on an AGA in double cream.

The room was well decorated and comfortable whilst the hotel itself was what you would expect of a country house with pictures of wildlife, some stuffed animals and ancient guns on the walls. It seems to be popular with anglers and those with wildlife / outdoor pursuits, who often stay for a week at a time. It perhaps would not suit animal rights activists but for anyone else who is looking for a friendly small country hotel with excellent food, this is one not to miss.

We stopped off here on our way to Inverness to break up the journey. The hotel is very darkly painted but this only adds to the atmosphere. The room we were given was No 5 and this had a four poster bed, a settee, nice furnishings and a lovely refurbished bathroom. Everywhere was clean and tidy. The food in the restaurant is excellent, with a wide choice and breakfasts are superb, the selection including such luxuries as smoked salmon and kippers in cream! The owners and staff are all extremely friendly and the hotel gives the impression of being well run and totally unpretentious. I noticed that most of the guests who were there when we stayed were called by their first names which shows that they stay regularly - surely a very good sign?

Having no plans but to reach Scotland on 40 year old Lambretta Scooter from Bath same day March Bank Hotel was welcome sight. The owners quickly showed us to delightful four poster room overlooking family estate. It was dark in corridors and had many stuffed animals which may seem off putting but added to the character. We especially liked the dressed up Fox resembling Alexander the Meerkat. Simples.

We booked into restaurant and had lovely meal. Well cooked with large selection of fresh seasonal vegetables. Delicious. Breakfast offered full scottish variety plus kippers or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs all included in the £75 epr room per night.

It was definitely the highlight of my 3 nights away , thanks to the proprietors.
