“Country hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

Lovely hotel, very welcoming and friendly staff. Room was clean, very large and traditionally furnished which suited the country setting. Roomy bathroom. On arrival our room was upgraded at no extra charge. Two restaurants in hotel and we ate in both. Bay restaurant was not busy and food could have been served at a hotter temperature, disappointed with main meal. Waiter serving us was very attentive and pleasant which made complaining difficult. Food in terrace was very good with a more relaxed atmosphere, food was served hot. Breakfast was generous but again needed to be hotter. Ideal location for a relaxing stay, short drive to Cardigan and Aberaeron. Would definitely recommend.

just returned from a 2 night stay at the penrallt hotel. thoroughly enjoyed our stay. it is an edwardian hotel set in its own grounds on the outskirts of aberporth. we were surrounded by daffodils, snowdrops and little lambs.Views over tresaith headland from the front were beautiful. The staff could not have been more helpful and the food was lovely. There was plenty of choice of breakfast including leek welsh cakes with laver bread. The ingredients were sourced locally and were delicious. The log fires were lit and everything was clean and warm. The pool was available but it wasnt quite warm enough for us. i enjoyed the peace and quiet and the lack of background music at breakfast as we got chatting to fellow guests. A lovely part of wales close to many beautiful beaches which at this time of year were deserted . a lovely break.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front with balconies have the best views.

This was our second visit, after a New year stay with friends. We had the same room (No 3) both times and thoroughly enjoyed both visits.
The hotel is located conveniently on the outskirts of the lovely village of Aberporth, just outside Cardigan. It's not the best known area for visitors compared to neighbouring pembrokeshire but is well worth a visit. There are several small coastal villages nearby with excellent beaches (packed in Summer) and wonderful walks, includng the Welsh Coastal Path. Cardigan itself is not particularly attractive but has several quirky, independent shops as well as a few chains and a very good theatre/cinema.
The staff at the Penrallt were excellent, very friendly and helpful. Good breakfasts. The room is large and comfortable, with a quaint wooden balcony. Flat screen TV, twin beds. A good bathroom, although the bath could be tricky to get out of if you are not that flexible or steady on your feet, as there is a step down from the tub.
The hotel is an old family home and in places shows its age, but it is individual and very clean and maintained. Pleasant dining room, bar area and lounge. The recption area is quite confined and small but we liked the entrance area and stairwell.
There is an indoor pool, although we have yet to use it.

What a beautiful house, the grounds are so well maintained with spectacular views over the bay.
And the food well, that was outstanding and it is so reasonably priced too.
The staff are a joy, especially Fred who seemed to work 24 hours he was always there and willing to accommodate with all requests within reason!
Please don't take any notice of the negative comments you would be missing a real gem of a hotel if you did.
Yes it's old but that 's what makes it so special, go to the Marriott or Premier Inn if what you want is modern and boring. You can just sit in the lounge here and look around the room the ceilings, floors and especially the original fireplaces are so beautiful.
I would recommend the Penrallt if you like peace and quiet with beautiful decor and gardens, also you must eat here the quality of the food is superb.
I really cannot believe the negative comments you know what you are going to get if you do your research, it's remote, old and very quite just what we wanted, beautiful!!!

We stayed here between 9th March and 11th March, this was booked via a groupon deal.
We had a lovely stay and are already planning our next trip back. All the staff were very helpful. We had a garden room which was very peaceful and quiet. We would definately recommend this hotel. the only way of improvement i would suggest is to have some background music whilst eating breakfast so that people can talk to each other without worrying about the table next door listening. also to have the plates warmer when serving breakfast. the breakfast was delicious and so was our evening meal. we thouroughly enjoyed our trip.

We live locally and go to the Penrallt for sunday lunch. The food can not be faulted absolutely delicious. But the total joy is the staff, so welcoming and great with children. Crayons, colouring books and a feeling of being able to relax. It is a beautiful hotel and gorgeous inside & out, but not stuffy at all. I could curl up on the sofa with a bottle of red and be set for the night, not an easy atmosphere to create!!!! WELL DONE PENRALLt. we will definetly be back!!!!!

Stayed at the Penrallt on a groupon deal and were really impressed with the hotel and the team of staff working there. We were a little apprehensive after reading the mixed reviews but as we pulled into the grounds we could see that the hotel and gardens were to a high standard and well cared for. We stayed in a beautiful room (14) which had a separate living room with a small balcony overlooking the bay. The bar area had an open fire which was much appreciated after a long walk on the beach at Aberporth. This was such a good deal and a very enjoyable break away - would definitely return. A big thank you to all the hard working staff who seemed to work very long hours but always had a smile on their face.
