“What a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

as a performer I travel extensively staying in myriad forms of accomodation ranging from adequate to good, but, every now and then, a stay becomes so much more! Durn House and hosts John and Sandra are an absolute gem!...the welcome, the decor, the comfort, the food, all superb and then when you don't think it can get any better...you realise you are just a stones throw from the "beautiful" Portsoy. Go there, breathe deeply, relax, enjoy, we will certainly do so again.
John, Sandra...thank you,
here's to next time!

Room Tip: top floor has pvt lounge. Gt for families/groups.

Many thanks for your kind review and may we both say what a pleasure it was to have you stay with us. We greatly admired your work with Help the Heroes and how you selfishly raised over £120,000 towards that worthy Charity by singing your way around 365 pubs in 365 days.

We look forward to you returning to Portsoy soon and maybe we can have a sing song around our crackling fire..............

Warmest regards

John and Sandra

If you are fed up of traffic, smoggy air, average food and the normal day to day rushing around, then this is the place to slow down, sit back and relax. Durn House really is a stunning building in a beautiful village called Portsoy which has everything you may need, whether you are looking for scenic walks, staying near the old fishing harbour or friendly local pubs and shops. The house in itself is decorated to the highest standard but still keeping the Traditional Scottish feel to it, our room had a super-king size bed which felt huge and apparantly this is one of there smaller beds with other rooms having "Emperor Beds" in them. Over these beds was the finest linen and the room also had bath robes, flat screen TV's, bottled water, tea, coffee and snacks. John and Sandra were excellent hosts and we enjoyed our tour of this amazing house finding out the history, this was before we relaxed in front of an open fire in the drawing room and then went on to enjoy the excellent home cooked food which we had for dinner and breakfast. The whole experience was wonderful from start to finish and I really cannot wait to come back next year.

Room Tip: You will not be disappointed with any of the rooms.

Many thanks for your generous and kind review. We believe that Portsoy is a bit of a hidden Gem and the 17th Century Harbour is an enchanting place to sit, relax and take in the views. The Banffshire Coast has lots to offer whatever your likes from Castle Trails and Distilleries to Dolphin watching and a multitude of birdlife. We are also a very friendly Village and we openly welcome visitors from all over the world.

Kindest regards and Haste Ye Back.....

By far the most enjoyable short break away I have had for while.

The quality of the room furnishings, the completely restful ambience of the house, the wonderul breakfasts and super evening meals were a delight to experience - I kept expecting someone from Downton Abbey to appear!

It was not at all a minus not being licensed, quite the reverse as we really thought about what to take with us for refreshment with dinner etc.

Our hosts were welcoming and charming. Their wish for guests to feel the real 'country house' home from home idyll was relished by my sister and I as we relaxed and let John and Sandra care for us.

The communal reception rooms and dining room are exquisitively decorated and the place is warm and not at all dark or draughty as you might expect in a large property such as Durn House.

Only one little negative - our room whilst clean and extremely inviting overall it had not been dusted and so there was evidience of either non occupation for a while on the lovely wood furniture.

I wish John and Sandra every sucess with their future ventures at Durn House and look forward to seeing the gardens all bright and sparkly when next we visit at a warmer time of year. Cant wait to return.

A great time and well worth the money.

Room Tip: We were shown a lot of the rooms and they all looked inviting and luxurious. Our stay was in the Sil...

Many thanks for your kind review. Apologies for the dust but I had just repaired a crack in the ceiling before your arrival and unfortunately there was some residue filler dust on the TV stand that I missed during my clear up. We hope that this oversight did not unduly spoil your experience and we look forward to greeting you again soon.

The plan was to escape. Relax and wonder around. Portsoy is definately a calming location and Durn House is oustanding. Greeted by John who welcomed us into his beautiful home. It was challenging to not be distracted by the interior. The rooms are all indiviually decorated and attention to detail has obviously been someones passion. Met Johns wife, Sandra later. Is it possible to have 2 more inviting people? The days were spent relaxing and evenings playing music and pool in the "Gentlemans Lounge". One evening we could smell food and kicked ourselves for not booking as it smelt gorgeous. Breakfast at Durn House meant that I did not eat until 6pm as I was so full! John will no doubt convince you to try a Buttery too!

Many thanks for your kind review, it is always rewarding when Guests not only enjoy their stay but also take the time to tell others. We are also glad that you enjoyed our facilities and in particular the Pool Table in our Gentleman's Club Room, which appears to be a popular pastime for a lot of our Guests. The house has indeed been a passion for Sandra who, without previous training has managed to design all the rooms and should take credit for the fabulous attention to detail. Portsoy is a great getaway place but easy to get to and central for all the North of Scotland has to offer. We sincerely hope you will visit us again it was a pleasure to welcome you to Durn House.

Went with 3 other couples for a destressing weekend for 2 nights and it did the trick - only was not long enough!!!! We took over the top floor lounge and were pretty noisy after attempting scrabble and charades - which was encouraged by John - even though there was a honeymoon couple staying and another couple there for a quiet time! As this room is very comfortable and away from other rooms this worked very well as the walls are so thick. Absolutely perfect hosts John and Sandra very warm and welcoming - nothing too much trouble at any time of day and go out of their way to do this in this fantastic old house with five star luxury decor and comfort. So impressed we are making it an annual trip 55 miles up the road from home just - can't wait - may need to go again before then!!!! thks a lot.

Room Tip: all rooms are fantastic - spoiled for choice

We are extremely grateful for the time taken to offer your most generous review and we are delighted that you and your party enjoyed your stay with us at Durn House. We find that groups do enjoying the privacy afforded by utilising the 3 bedrooms and Guest Lounge located on the Executive Floor, as it would appear to have been the case with your party of friends. We pride ourselves in the level of quality that we have adopted at Durn House and it is always gratifying to hear that our Guests recognise this fact also.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon, when you can be assured of a warm and generous welcome - "Haste Ye Back"

Just back from a wonderful weekend at Durn House. Hosts John and Sandra were fantastic, friendly, welcoming and very attentive. The house has been beautifully restored and the rooms are all splendid. We were a party of 4 couples and all loved it. The beds are huge and you just melt into them, with big down pillows and duvets and it is so peaceful. The quality of the linen, fabrics and furnishings is very high and very tastefully decorated. All the bedrooms are unique. We stayed two nights with dinner and breakfast which we enjoyed in the grand dining room. We felt totally spoilt and relaxed and are already planning our next trip back. There is lots to see and do in and around the local area, whatever the weather but we mostly just chilled out in the house and played many a game of pool in the games room. We also enjoyed the upstairs lounge where we could chat and play board games with our friends. Recommend highly.

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely and look even better than the photos

Many thanks for your generous review, it is much appreciated. We find that the additional Guest Lounge on the Executive Floor provides a comfortable environment for larger parties to mingle and take advantage of our range of Board Games and 42" LCD TV with integral DVD, CD player and radio facilities. The Games Room provides additional facilities for Guests to enjoy, again with a 42" LCD and the Pool/Snooker table together with Ipod docking station and pre-loaded Ipod player. For those Guests who hanker for a more peaceful space, we have the Drawing Room and Reception Room - both providing a serene environment for reading or catching up with your emails utilising our free WiFi connection or indeed our House Laptop. We have purposefully chosen a larger style of bed within Durn House ranging from Emperor, through Super King to King size, all complemented with the highest quality bed linen and pillows.

We look forward to enjoying your company again in the near future - "Haste Ye Back"
