“Excellent ale and food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

Just got back from our break in the Dales. We found this place after a long walk along the pennine way and decided to book a luxurious, rare sunday afternoon meal.
The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was excellent, freshly prepared and top quality ingredients too, the portions were spot on.

Cannot really embellish on this. Probably best just to say thank you and we hope to come back.

We have just spent 3 nights at the lister arms. The food and staff were great although we had a long wait for our main course on our last night. We agree with others as we stayed in room 10 that the fan in the bathroom stays on far too long and that you can hear upstairs as well. The windows could do with net curtains as no view from either window and the front window is overlooked by the back door and the back by the septic tank. The bath towels are tatty and could do with replacing. Overall though the stay was good great for walking malham which we did.

Thank you for your comments, we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. We are addressing the issues you've raised about room 10. We were fully aware of the towel situation and are pleased to say that our laundry company has replaced all the bath towels with larger, fluffier new ones. We hope to have you stay with us again in the near future.

Kind regards,
Rachel Mayes - Manager and all the team at The Lister Arms.

Please read my other reviews, they are mostly complimentary not critical.
Arrived at the hotel and were shown to a small dark, double room, I expressed surprise as we had booked a family room (which looked spacious, airy and light), just the night before, and unfortunately we said it was ok, a lesson learned!!
The room initially looked ok, the furnishings and fixtures were all good quality, it was nice and clean, nice local photos on the walls, a good bathroom, but the room was really dark and dingy with an unappealing view of a septic tank, the lights had to be on all the time. Also the extractor fan in the bathroom stays on for a really long time after the light is switched off and you can hear the one in the room upstairs as well. The bath towels were really old and tatty and not quite white, the hand towels were really good quality so not sure what's going on there,
After overhearing a conversation in the bar I realised that our booked room had been given to another couple, why? It would have been nice if some recognition was made but not even a drink at the bar, the second class room was even charged at the same price, no sign of a manager when we checked out so we couldn't discuss our disappointment. I would welcome a response.
Anyway, we made the best of a bad job and spent no time in the room, especially as there was only 1 chair and no room for another.
Location is great for Malham Cove, nothing better than an early walk there before the crowds arrive.
We ate in the Lister both nights, first night in the restaurant and second night in the bar, the Lister is really busy so best to book a table. The food and service were really good on both nights, same menu in both the bar and restaurant. The service staff are all really young but very attentive.
Breakfast was really good, again good service and a good selection.
I can't comment on the other rooms but the bar and restaurant are really well decorated, the atmosphere is good, my only gripe, and I accept some of the responsibility, is that we didn't get the room we booked and weren't given any recognition for it. After a long drive we just said ok, a mistake I won't make again. I hope the couple who got our room appreciated it!!

Room Tip: Don't book room 10 unless you are deaf and blind. There's no view, its dark and the noise fr...

We welcome all comments good and bad about our Inn. We are happy you enjoyed the food and location. All our 15 bedrooms are different, some have high ceilings, some low beams, some overlook the green, some are in the renovated 200 year cottage adjoining the Inn, like room 10. We believe this is what gives the building its character, unfortunately the odd room does have small windows and not a great deal of natural light, but staying in Malhamdale is all about being outside. We do not fully know the reason why your booking was moved and I am sorry that an opportunity didn’t arise to discuss your disappointment with this issue during your stay. We have addressed the other issues you raise. Many thanks for your custom.

Kind regards,
Rachel Mayes - Manager and all the team at The Lister Arms.

We found the Lister Arms whilst searching for good food in Malham. We were actually staying at another Inn in Malham where we found the food uninspiring. The Lister Arms ticked ALL of the boxes, in fact we shall try and stay here when we next visit Malham. The staff were all VERY hospitable, the food was excellent and the log fire was a treat. A real warm welcome in its truest sense! Oh, and the homemade cakes are great as well! We made a point of asking to see some examples of their rooms whilst we were there. They were only too happy to oblige and we were very pleased with what we saw.

The other reviews below back up our experience which was that the food was hit and miss and that the (very young) staff were almost overwhelmed. The location and the decor are lovely but it feels as if less experienced lower wage workers are being asked to cope with more than they're trained for. There is little competition in Malham (check out the reviews for the Buck Inn!) but this hotel clearly has aspirations above its skill level at the moment. I don't blame the staff who were clearly trying very hard but they need more of them and my guess would be they need to pay and train them better.

Thank you for your comments. We do aspire to be a fabulous Inn that exceeds the expectations of all our guests. We sorry that we did not meet your expectations with the service this time. Our industry does employ many younger staff and we take the development of these young people very seriously. We continually strive to improve the guests experience through training. We do hope to see you again.

Kind regards,

This is a great place to stay. Great food, quality fittings and a good price especially considering the great location. Staff were very friendly and made you feel welcome. Real ale was very good. It's a short walk to Malham Cove and Goredale Scar. Would definitely stay again.

I stayed at the Lister arms recently with my husband, mother and dog. All in all we had a very enjoyable short break. Our room was in the newer 'cottage' annexe and was very clean and well appointed with an enormous double bed and large bathroom. My mother's room was in the main building and definitely a little more worn, although the carpets were being replaced during the stay. A definite plus for us was that it was dog friendly and it was no problem at all having the dog in the bar area and room. Service was generally friendly, although some definite inconsistencies from one day to the next in terms of meals. We had dinner here twice, although after the first meal, if there had been more selection locally, we would have explored elsewhere. Having said that, if you stick to the traditional pub grub - fish and chips, beef burger etc, they were pretty tasty. The other meals were average. The bar area is very atmospheric and I imagine it would be lovely in winter with the wood burners and fires. The inn itself is very well positioned for some lovely walks around Malham Cove and the surrounding Dales. All in all, we had a fantastic break, with dinner being the only slightly low point of our stay.
