“Original prehistoric cave art in SW France”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

This smaller version of Lascaux is well worth visiting, It does not have the volume of artwork present in its more famous sibling, however, the fact you actually get to see the original artwork made by our prehistoric ancestors, gives a frisson that is worth every penny spent. It is cool underground, so make sure you take some warm clothing, (which may seem excessive if you are in 38C heat as we were that day!) The tour is obligatory and guided, and in high season you will have to book in advance. Starting times are not always what they say they are, we were due to start at 4.00 pm and didn't enter the caves until 5.00 pm!

“Good day out, something for all ages. Must be able-bodied.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Don't get caught out by the lunch time closure (as we did, and had to go away for a picnic before returning!). Choose your morning or afternoon visit and check out the website for opening times. Late september was not busy, so we didn't book ahead, but it may be sensible to do so. There were only a couple of us who spoke English so we listened to the french and then got an abbreviated translation. Tour seemed longer because of it (time to improve your french!). It felt cold and damp in the caves, so wear sensible shoes and take a jumper. Very interesting both in the caves and elsewhere in the grounds. I went with my sister and brother in law, husband and young daughter. Actually liked it better than Gouffre de Padirac.

We had a smallish group, which enabled us to get a good look at everything. I imagine in peak season it's pretty hectic.

never disappoints. Fascinating. A great experience but gets very busy so be sure to reserve a tour time.

“Well worth the wait”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

We really enjoyed our visit to Peche Merle, we got there early in the morning, so that we could get in without making a prior booking. It was well worth the effort. Our guide was very helpful, and tried to explain as much as she could in English. Our children (14 and 11 yrs) really enjoyed it, as did we.

“The reason I now live, every summer, in sw France”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

This is a must-see place, whatever the scientists decide about its age! (It's now disputed whether or not Cro-Magnons or Neanderthals did the paintings in spain so i would think the sqme is true for Pech Merle!

I visit yearly and it never fails to stun the imagination--and change my outlook on what it means to be human...
