“Great Atmosphere, Artisan Pizza and Ice Cream”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

I have a stick up my rear end. The good-natured extroversion of this place, its clientele, and owner/operator/chef/waiter John removed it. The cornerstone of the bonhomie is John's artisan, from-scratch, perfect pizza and exotic ice creams.

“Legendary.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

Walking into this place is like going for dinner at your old friend's house. You are immediately part of the Pizza John family, and all other guests are immediate friends.

Graffiti everywhere, a dog that John insists runs the show, and pizza that is worth the drive.

One piece of graffiti reads: "You don't discover Pizza John's. It discovers you." Truer words have never been hastily scrawled on the wall of a patio in the middle of nowhere.

John's signs to his "restaurant" are so small that the place can be difficult to find. I'm convinced he does this on purpose so that it limits guests. Kinda genius, in a way.

Overall, the real deal.

“pizza in the clouds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

John is an ex pat, who swore to never make another pizza, but now makes pizza and ice cream in Castillo. Prices are fair, pizza is very good, and ice cream is excellent.

“Must-do in El Castillo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

Don't think restaurant, think being invited into this Californian baby boomer expat's personal hangout in the jungle. Taco the Wonder Dog actually runs the place while John entertains the diners. Don't expect linen napkins. Expect well cooked thin crust pizzas with simple toppings, cold beers, home made ice cream, what's not to like? We dropped in there for a quick family lunch and were hooked, just been back for New Year's Eve: which turned into a jamming session with John's friends - of which I'm sure there are a multitude both in CR and around the world.
