“Better than we expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2007

We had a great time at the flamboyant..
ROOM: Was clean and had all that was needed, problem with hot water was sorted within 10 mins of reporting at reception.(only downside was a bad view from room but we decided not to let this ruin our holiday as sometimes we have had very good upgrades so you can't always be the lucky one!!!)
FOOD:At first we thought it was a small selection and were worried but we found something we liked at each meal with no problems not 5* but fine + no tummy problems at all.
Drinks: A selection of cocktails, soft drinks coke+diet, sprite (don't drink larger) all the drinks we tried were good.
BEACH: Once again lovely ,always loungers.. even when hotel was full and no need to run down to reserve one. nice walk either way along the beach waves and current are strong but just use caution great fun.
POOL:Much smaller that pics but again it was fine always clean again didn't have to rush for loungers
We enjoyed our stay here it has a few little niggles but nothing to ruin your holiday...would go back to this hotel... loved margarita

Margarita Island is a Hot & beautiful place with plenty to do. A must on this trip is to swim with the doplhins. The holiday was let down by slightly due to the terrible entertainment. The entertainment was more like a group of teenegers messing about on the dance floor in any local nightclub (Although they were no longer teenagers) I must say that this put a slight dampener on the holiday as most of the local bars & restaurants were closed down (Probably due to all inclusive holidays killing local trade) and you were limited for places to go at night trying to escape the entertainment.
Hotel staff were not great and tended to ignore people going to the reception desk. One of the Barmen was particularly miserable but made by far the best cocktails but I understood his plight as he had to see the entertainment EVERY night.
However the holiday itself was brilliant, Jeep safari, Dolphins, Boat trips, great food (Outside the hotel) & most of all it was SUNNY.

  • Liked — It was in a sunny climate, the rest was mediocre.
  • Disliked — The staff & OMG the entertainment was dreadful

Have just came back from Isla Margarita. We have had a great vacation, Margarita is a nice place with lots of things to do… that is if you go open-minded and do not expect feather bed, caviar, tidiness, hardworking staff and superior care…
HOTEL
Hotel is of a decent size and has everything you need – enough bars, restaurans, a small shop, pool and an evening entertaining area. We have had a very nice room in the third floor, overlooking the pool (you might want to request this last floor, because ceilings are very high with nice wooden girders) and a small balcony. The room was cleaned up every day, in a Venezuelan standard though – i.e. they made beds and supplied new towels, other than that I couldn´s observe any effort whatsover (tips didnt help ). Food was very tasty, the choice was quite small, but sufficient. The best things are of course the caipirinha drinks (have developed an addition to them) – but be careful – it is only rum, sugar and limes – easy to get drunk. I agree with other travelers – the hotel management is extremely unfriendly and arogant. This would not normaly upset me but it did this time, since 200USD got STOLEN from locked safe in our room and the management was totaly unhelpful, ignoring our complaints, not willing to communicate with us at all, no apology. I would not go back to this hotel and do not recomend it to any of you, eventhough apart from the managements attitude it is a good hotel.
ISLA MARGARITA
The island is beautiful but be prepared to see that it is covered with rubbish. Venezuelan people are quite lazy, they spend all day sitting on the porch staring and doing nothing, next to a huge pile of trash and they do not borther to clean it up.
The weather was very nice, hot but with a pleasant breeze. Beaches are great, we stayed at Playa el Aqua, which was absolutely amazing!! Waves and currents are not so strong this time of year.
The best thing about the island are the trips, either on your own (taxis are very cheap) or as a tour with a guide. We did horsebackriding on Cabatucan ranch and loved it totaly, eventhough it was our second time in life horsebackriding (55USD). Swimming with dolphines was nice and a great experience that you will hardly find elswhere (cca 60USD). Canaima is a must, its amazing, I have never been to such a beautiful place before (cca 300USD). We took a catamaran trip to Coche island, which we as well enjoyed very much (cca 40USD- dont remember exactly). I would recomend you to go to two-day Delta Orinoco-Canaima as I have talked to those who have been and they loved it. Also Roques are supposed to be quite good but a little expensive – cca 240USD.
Current official excange rate is 2150 bolivars / 1USD. We have exchanged money for 3000bol./USD in the shop in our hotel, and also in shops around playa el Aqua for 3.400bol./USD, which I assume is quite good and was on the safe side. We had a dinner at a local restaurant at Manzanillo beach, owned by two brothers and we loved it very much!
IN GENERAL
I definitely recomend you to go to Isla Margarita, stay in a different hotel than Flamboyant, but definitely at Playa el Aqua, as it has its special charm. Do as many trips as possible as these will make your vacation a great one.

All I can say about this holiday is 'Great Island, shame about the hotel'. For my wife and I this is the second time we have come to Margarita Island which we did as a package from the UK, last time we stayed at Hesperia Playa El Aqua which was great, so this time we thought we would have a change so we stayed at Le Flamboyant hotel - bad move. Firstly, we liked Playa El Aqua and still do. The hotel. We stayed in the newer block on the first floor, the corridors were not kept clean, the rooms were fairly large but again the cleaning was of a low standard and we had a serious ant problem, those people staying on the second floor didnt seem to have this problem. We were given 2 small bars of soap, 2 sachets of hair shampoo and no shower gel for the whole 14 night stay so we had to buy our own. The pool: for the whole 14 night stay , the water was murky and not clear in fact you could not see the bottom of the pool at all, the sides of the pool were crumbling away and in need of renovation. The beach towels were a disgrace and were no more than rags and often badly stained. We had to pay a $20 fee and if you did not hand in towel card at the end of the holiday you lost this deposit, I would have been very angry to pay $20 for what was only rags. The food: this was boring and lacked taste, there was pasta and fish in garlic for lunch and dinner every day and we even had the previous nights meals heated up for breakfast. The sweet stand was a plastic container with a hole in it so the sweets were often covered in ants and at one point could actually be seen to move!
We would go to Margarita again but not to this hotel.

The Hotel Flamboyant is well positioned across the beach road from Playa el Agua, just a few steps. Although the whole family really enjoyed our holiday in Margarita, there were several issues with this hotel.

OWNERS: I have never stayed in a hotel where the owners were so miserable. Several times we attempted to communicate with a friendly "Hola", but received no response, not even a smile. This was such a shame, as most of the staff were really friendly, even the miserable bar man cracked smiles once a small tip was left in his glass!!

SWIMMING POOL. The pool was excellent when we arrived, but by the second week was so cloudy that you couldn't see your feet, let alone anyone swimming along the bottom. For the last four days, we did not swim in the pool.

FOOD. Was fine for the first week, we all enjoyed the fresh pasta cooked several lunchtimes. By the second week, the choice became repetitive, and quite boring. We took to eating out at some excellent local sea food restaurants. The Dona Elvira at Playa Manzanillo being the best. (Main meal, desert, beers, good wine, sambucas all for £10 a head!)

EASTER. Beware; it seems the entire population of Venezuela goes to Playa el Agua and Playa Paraguito (the next beach) at Easter. It was impossible to walk along the main section of beach without stepping over people for the days during the national holiday. The music pumped and the locals partied, which was fun to watch and experience. We were lucky (?) to experience President Chavez introduce a 9 day ALCOHOL BAN!! It lasted one day in the hotel, but longer in some restaurants. We heard on the plane home that some other hotels ignored it completely, but some stuck to the ban religiously! Interesting when you are on an all inclusive holiday.

To sum up, we really enjoyed our holiday on Margarita, met some great people on holiday at the same time, some good locals, eat some lovely local fish in the restaurants, had perfect weather, thought the hotel landscaping was excellent, generally liked the hotel and the staff, the rooms were clean and tidy, the air conditioning worked well - but the hotel was let down by the lack of interesting food and the really appalling attitude of the owners. I suggest First Choice (who we traveled with) take this up with them if they intend to continue using this hotel, as it did cause many guests to comment.

  • Liked — Location, hotel landscaping, general good "feel" to the place
  • Disliked — The owners and the repetetive nature of the "canteen" style food.

We had a really great holiday on Margarita Island. We would highly recommend the following:

Orinoco Delta/Canaima/Angel Falls Trip - pricey but worth every penny.
Jeep Safari, Day out on Coche Island. Some people we met went swimming with Dolphin's and everybody really seemed to have enjoyed it.

Weather was fantastic, a bit too hot for us in the middle of the day but couldn't complain otherwise. Our room had good aircon so sleeping wasn't a problem. Didn't get biten in the room at all and only found one bug - a cockroach which we quickly exterminated and flushed down the toilet!

Hotel is ideally located by Playa del Agua and is quite pretty and well maintained. The rooms are a decent size and kept reasonably clean. The plumbing isn't the best and there was a regular faint smell of seweage from our bathroom which wasn't very pleasant. The food was really quite poor and by the end of our trip we were eating out quite regularly - El Pacifico opposite the hotel is a good seafood restaurant and we went a couple of times to a really good restaurant in Manzanillo - a pretty beach just a 10min taxi ride away. If you're lucky you will get to watch the sun set! The desserts at the resort were particularly poor but we still lived in hope every day........but to no avail!!! You can eat once a week in the Grill Restaurant - the menu was hilarious with options including 'Meat with mushrooms' & Pasta with a sauce' Again nothing special but an improvement on the normal canteen food!
The staff and management in general were friendly and helpful but the owner's who seemed to be there regularly were very unfriendly to the point of seeming rude. We never saw either of them cracking a smile - perhaps this would have been too painful for them! If you own a hotel and can't manage to smile or be pleasant to your guests it would be better if you kept out of sight.
We would recommend sticking to the local beer - Polar as the wine served with the meal is pretty poor. Red is better than the white though.
Last but not least met some really great people through both our hotel and the trips we did which really made a difference to our holiday.
Would recommend this holiday and would advise to check out the hotels on Coche Island. They looked very nice.
