“Mi gusta Isla Margarita en Isla Caribe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

A group of 15 people travelled as a family vacation. The beginning of the vacation was quite rocky since our flight had been delayed and we arrived at the hotel 3 in the morning. We were given small food boxes with a sandwich and fruits.
We settled in our rooms and were glad to get some rest. Some of our group members were placed in a separate building but we didnt mind at all. We were just satisfied that we were accomodated in the renovated section of the hotel since we had booked in advance and expected to be placed in the new section of the hotel.
The buffet was good and I preferably ejoyed the snack bar where I ate most of the stay. They had hotdogs, burgers, fries and other finger food items. We did not eat at any of the specialty restaurants since they were under renovations.
The nightly shows were great and we took part in both sections.
A major issue was the attitude of some of the workers, they can be quite careless while others such as the waitresses and maids are so hardworking. One day our toilet had overflowed without even using it, which was really disgusting. The stench and the experience was intolerable, we contacted the front desk and waited. They finally sent maintainance to resolve the issue and we agreed to stay in that room because they really did a good job in cleaning up and handling the situation. For the rest of the stay, the washroom worked well.
During our stay, we did the tour downtown where we did shopping on the streets. Beware there are several con artists that pose as currency exchangers offerring you a large rate in fact they conduct black magic. I suggest that you change your money in the hotel, your tour rep or in sae shops. It can become quite uncomfortable and irritating because they people try to hassle and haggle you on the streets. I also suggest walking with single bills and not much cash. We then visited the centro commercial mall, Sambil which was HUGE and really fascinating. The Diverland theme park was also a good experience.
The beach is not the best, quite rocky and dirty but it didnt affect me. I made use of the swimming pools and the waterpark close by.
What i enjoyed the most was the location of the resort, it was close to the waterpark, we actually walked instead of paying the extra bucks to be transported by car. Trust me use your brains and you can save alot of dollars. Parque el Agua was exilarating, it was $20 Bolivars per person i believe but its worth it. I suggest visiting early in the morning so you can enjoy the entire day.
Overall the hotel is a good selection. The atmosphere and vibes of the people are great. Truly a party resort, lots of singing and dancing. The entetainment at nights were never-ending. There were a few hiccups but i would return. We visited during the summer and I'm planning on returning during the Christmas season.

Room Tip: Please ensure to state that you wanna be accomodated in the remodelled section of the hotel. The new...

It is a good midrange resort, it does have a great selection of activities, but maintenance here is poor. The staff is extremely friendly, the food is midgrade. As an extensive world traveler I would not highly recommend the meals. My room had several issues, first of all it takes a real strongman to open the room door, second- the air conditioner was blowing warm air, third- the toilet didn't flush, you had to lift the lid and pull the flush cord. You know they know about these things from the maid and yet nothing is done. I did get the room for a great rate. I never complained to the front desk due to the fact that many of the previous reviews I read on this site had the very same issues. There was extremely good entertainment during meal time and on the outdoor stage. There are better resorts here on Margarita island, look carefully.

The resort in itself is great....but that's it. The rooms are terrible, smell like a cross of mildew and pine oil cleaner. The bed might have been the hardest bed that I have ever slept on, including the pillows. We checked out after the first night and moved to another resort which was much better. I not sure how this place has 4 stars, not good. The people were very friendly despite the sub-standard product that they had to work with.

After reading previous reviews I was a little worried but wanted to be able to come back and write a wonderful review. I am thankful that I can do that. We loved this place, the staff were friendly and attentive. The weather was amazing. The food was typical resort food which we enjoyed. At breakfast they had eggs made to order. The bacon wasn't as cooked as we would like so we just gave it to the person ,making the omelets and got her to fry it up more. there was fruit, pasteries, oatmeal, hot chocolate, corn cakes, juices, coffee, tea, two kinds of cereals, yogurts . Toaster, bottles of hersey syups. The yogurts were in a fridge by them self. Other meals had breaded eggplant, pumpkin squash, carrots, brocolli, rice, pasta, lost of parmesan cheese, pork, beef, chicken. They had 3 dinner buffets , two lunch buffets, deep fried whole fish, by the beach they had a separate area where they had hot dogs, hamburgers. They did have ketchup, mustard, mayo . The cold food was cold and the hot was okay . There was birds flying in and out of the buffets so if you leave your table unattended you might find a bird there. Tip is to get two plates and cover it. Our room was very big 16 x 30 feet and had a small fridge with freezer, flat screen tv. Two king beds . Good strong airconditioner. There was no peep hole or chain lock. Very clean actually spotless. Plenty of space to hang clothes and put in drawers. The safe is free. To operate the safe you have to push the button on the side to reset, then enter your 4 numbers then push B. The maids took all the towels and even the mat for the floor every day when they came to clean and then the new towels would come later in the day so the best thing to do is ask for some extra towels and put them in a drawer so you will have some any time of the day you need them. The shower is in the same area as the toilet which I did read from others was a problem for some people if you don't like that. This resort is like 3 in one and we did stay in the cascade side. The balcony is not one you can stand on. You do have a huge sliding window and a railing which some people hung their towels over. The resort is very clean, the pools large. The cascade is the quiet area. They do have an internet cafe where it is different than we have experienced before. You buy 30 minutes for 8 bsl ( this is less than 50 cents US) and 60 min for 15 bsl but you have to stay at the computer for the whole time. The computer wasn't available for 2 days so was inconvient. It isn't a card you buy where you can sign in and out when you please. The lady signs you in and out of the computer. The shuttle from the airport was about 40 minutes so this was a nice tour. We did take a taxi to the airport on our return and it cost 200 bsl. Lots of old cars from the 70's being driven in front of the resort very neat to watch. Go to the orientation it is very informative. The money exchange was 6.3 bsl for one USD at any instituation but our rep gave people 18 bsl and then two days later we got 20 bsl for one USD. They said not to bring Canadian money . The beach is right across the 2 lane street and it is tiny but if you just want to lay out and enjoy the surf sun and watch pelicans it is great. There is a resort life guard there and the good blue lounge chairs and canopys. There is a bar for the tourists. We did take the shuttle to Playa el Agua and was great. nice to walk the town flea market there and lots of local restaurants. Long beach you can walk with with no problems. There are lots of vendors but they are not pushy. Saw loads of pelicans sometimes 18 in a row it was amazing. Back to the resort - there was no signs that we could find saying the animination schedule. There was constantly a breeze outside that was nice. Tip - make a list of what you are bringing in to their country as you will get a paper to fill out on the plane asking you the value of toiletries, camera, jewellery, clothing, books each has to be listed and valued separately. You don't have to be exact but put down something. The big negative here is going home . The airport is a long process and doesnt seem to be very tourist friendly. It is a big hassle We were there for 4 1/2 hours. We waited an hour to have the first check point open. They make you put your bags on a table and they search it by hand. Then you walk over to another area and put your bag thru an exray scanner. Then you lineup at the counter for the clerk for your passports to be checked. Then you can relax and have a bite to eat up stairs they had pizza 35 bsl, fries 40 bsl, chicken nuggets 50 bsl and chicken burgers for 50 bsl. It was a nice little restaurant. Then while watching that our plane was sitting on the tarmac and we were all just sitting around it was frustrating. The guards didn't feel the need to complete our stay very quickly. We then had to line up men and women in two lines . We then had to put our bags up again on tables and have them searched again. Then we were patted down by guards and were allowed to get on our plane. We did buy chocolate bars at the first check in for 30 bsl and then found the same bars were 38 bsl once inside. Make sure you use your bsl money at the airport as it is of no use to you when you return to Canada. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Room Tip: Cascade section is the quiet one, Real section is where the pool activities take place. Tropical has...

Here is the scoop as I see it....

When you land at the airport you will be a little let down as they are in the process of renovating it. Eventually it will be marble tiled etc... A little space as you walk through the door is where you will find the check in counter for customs. If they give you the paper on the plane it will help with time. Just guess at how many pieces of clothing and shoes you bring with you as it would be impossible to rack your brain for no reason lol. That's just one of the odd questions on the entry visa. Then you will move forward to a doorway and hand the guard the visa, who will in turn give you half of that paper back. DON'T LOSE THIS!!! You will need it to leave the island.

You will then fetch your luggage (porters do not hassle you at all here!)
Once you find your luggage you will proceed to outside where you will find your tour guide...if you used nolitours it will be Mary Sol or Smyrna (both awesome and helpful ladies) This person will show you which bus you will be on.

Once you arrive at the resort ....

Check in: easy and fast. (oh and did I mention that staff do indeed understand English better than most Canadians travelling speak Spanish lol??)

-make sure you get a premier room...much better with dehumidifier and new everything!
-ask for your tv remote at front desk as it's not in the room

Once in your room you will find a safe which can be a bit confusing...when you open it there is a reset button on the inside door ledge...press it then you get to choose your 4 digit pin for the safe. FYI the safe is free to use and quite big. will even hold a laptop.

The Resort.....

can you say BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!

It is quite spacious consisting of 3 parts...I will not bore with what you can see for yourself via photos...

This resort has a large area just phenomenal for small children!!! a park, sand, soccer pitch, pool tables, foosball tables, video game room with ps3 and Nintendo etc...

The food is some of the best I have ever had at an all inclusive resort ( and we have been to many in the D.R, Cuba, Mexico and Bermuda)
The choices are not as vast but the quality is extremely good.
There is 2 buffet restaurants and unlike some other reviewers I did actually find a difference between the two...
I prefer the one in premier section for breakfast and the other for dinner as it had live music and better food for my taste buds...
It also has theme nights (fyi the Italian night was amazing!!! Lasagna to die for)
They post a board at the entrance to the buffet listing each nights theme in advance.
There is only 1 a la cart and it was a bit fancy as far as the food goes...for instance one option on the menu was filet mignon in a coffee cream sauce...a little odd for me but ok...just didn't like the texture of the meat but that was just me....others liked it. The kids menu had the BEST chicken fingers ever!!! actual chicken coated with something akin to corn flakes.....best I've ever eaten lol (my son didn't try them)

The pools...
Fabulous!!!! It was so warm it was like getting into a bath...no cold water here!!! Depending on your view...fortunately/unfortunately there is NO swim up bar at either pool, however it is just 4 steps from the edge of the pool stairs.
The drinks at the pool bar are great! Try one of their daiquiris...they are not strawberry in flavor but tangy orange. I loved them!! The beer is poured into a glass for you out of a bottle...no stinky draught beer here! Very nice too!

The snack bar is open during the day and offers hot dogs and hamburgers but not French fries. Instead they had something that reminded me of hickory sticks without the taste. You do not need to worry about the food or bringing ketchup either lol
Hot sauce however was sometimes hard to come by....

The nightly entertainment....
We were only present for one show due to the passing of their President. Most activities during our stay were dimmed due to this. The show we did see however was not bad. It was a compilation of Grease/Chicago/MamaMia/PhantomofOpera etc...

Off resort....

Due to the beach at the resort being almost gone and quite rough, they offer you a free shuttle to the beach Playa El Aqua....this is a must!!! It is perfectly safe and a nice view of the area. The beach itself has white sand and clear water. Beware!... we saw many dead jellyfish lining the beach and a friend has a pic of one swimming right beside him in the water.
The shops on the beach are great for gifts and such... If you like painting then look for a man called Victor Mendez on the road beside the beach...he is a fantastic artist who will paint a large picture for you for about $30.00 usd which as I purchase paintings from around the world I can tell you is extremely inexpensive.
There is also a shop where you can purchase Marlborough cigarettes for approx. $14 usd and alcohol.

I shopped til I dropped on this trip and still came home with money leftover!!!!

Tours/trips
Unfortunately we only did 1 trip this time and it was for shopping at the market and the mall....if you want to go it is great!!! Ask for taxi driver Carlos who speaks fluent English and he will take care of you at the market (vendors do NOT hassle you) and then take you to the Sambil Mall (McDonalds/KFC/Burger King...TommyH/ Florsheim/Casio/Lacoste/HardRock etc) prices at the mall are higher yet still less than here at home. I bought a bottle of Gucci parfume NOT eau de toilet for $60.00!!!!

We also walked along what I thought of as the Margarita island version of Young St in Toronto....Stores lined the road consisting of Puma ( pair of shoes size 8 mens were $23.00), Addidas, BestBuy, Billabong, Lacoste etc...

There are also little boutiques and even a dollar store that sells shoes and bags dirt cheap.

Perfectly safe, nobody even looked at us funny and we are 3 very non-latino looking blondes LOL

Oh on a side note...photocopy your passport and take that copy with you when you go shopping as some stores require this info for purchases. Most store workers also speak English too. We had a hard time with some of the prices as they speak very fast and my Spanish is not great but they just show you the number on a calculator so no worries.

We did also go over to the Parque El Aqua which you can see from the resort gates... it was so much fun...lazy river for hours...cost about $7 usd pp. Has snack bars with alcohol too. It is not open on Mondays and Tuesdays.

On the resort a small pocket Spanish/English dictionary helps...

People we met went on other tours and all said they were great!!!

If you want to exchange money....the first day go see the bartender in the lobby bar...after that go to Artesanias Orfilia jewellery store on the beach in Playa El Aqua on the side of the road closest to the beach....great pearls that are original and inexpensive !!! We shopped there every other day I think HAHAHA!
Do not take Canadian money the exchange is very bad....better to take USD in 20 or 50 denominations. Not ripped either.

Leaving for the airport....

The trip itself is nice to see...pictures galore if you have a good speed camera.
The airport itself is not fun!
As you enter you join a line, which you may not see as being too bad...until you realize that each one of those people in front of you have to have their luggage hand checked by a guard ( of which there were 3). Once you get past that you go to the check in counter where a lovely young lady will give you a hand written boarding pass for the plane. Unfortunately hand written boarding passes equal TIME!! It took us approximately 3 hours for these two procedures only!
Then you put your carry on luggage through the xray machine and you are through to the actual airport waiting are with a few shops and a restaurant. If you purchase anything in USD rather than Bolivars it will be double or triple in cost!! However if you don't use all of the Bolivars you have they are pretty much useless at home...the exchange (if you can do it is approx. 4 cdn dollars to 1. Unlike the 23 Bolivars to 1 USD there. So keep about 1000 Bolivars for the airport to be safe. The rum is about 50 Bolivars a bottle.

In the end we had an awesome time and will most definitely return!!!!!!
If we had this great of a time during a period of mourning for the people, I can not imagine how awesome this resort would be in full loud swing!!!

Pics to follow soon...

Room Tip: Premier section all the way!!!!!!!

After reading several reviews about this resort, my boyfriend and I decided to take the plunge, despite some rather negative-sounding reviews -don't believe them -this resort was a fantastic experience from begining to end! Both my boyfriend and I have travelled extensively- especially in the Caribbean , and from begining to end we were inpressed and delighted! To start off -go for the Premium Rooms -completely worth it! Our room was large, bed were large and comfortable, firm mattresses, clean, flatscreen tv -and best of all -being in the ''Real"section you are in the middle of it all! (live music at dinner, beautiful pool, great, lively vibe:) Our favourite feature was the hammock just at our front door to our room, great for after-dinner swingin' with a cocktail in hand! About the drinks - the best we''ve ever had on a resort! We hiiighly recommend the 1) Coco Loco , and the 2) Caipirinha (pr Kai-Pee-Ree-Na) -made fresh and strong! Note -they dont start serving alcohol until 11am -we know becaue we tried ordering drinks with breakfast;)Just a quick, but important note - I speak fluent Spanish, my boyfriend does not - and we both agreed that without the benefit of speaking Spanish, the trip would have been more challenging. This being said -a smile goes a long way! If you are going to be upset and throw attitude about eveyone not speaking English, then go to Florida. It's their country, their language, deal with it. We had a wonderful time, we came for a relaxing time, went on a day trip to the tiny island of Cubagua -and we highly recommend it! We had a complete blast! Snorkeling, mud bath, hike, great food and all the Cuba Libres you can swallow - and the guided were alot of fun -we even saw a pod of dolphins on the catameran on the way back!:) If you are looking to party hard then this is not the place howeverm -not Cancun, and im sorry to say but the ""disco"" is completely tragic, if I have anything negative to say, that would be it. The beach plays alot of club music during the day, we danced and played volleyball and frolicked on the beach:) Other than that, it is a lively resort, live music at dinner, always wonderful, talented ppl performing. The food at the the buffet was amazing! I always lose weight on vacation , as I am a self-confessed food-snob -however this food was far and away the best food I have ever had on even 5-star resorts on other islands in the Caribbean. I must have put on a few lbs and I dont even care! Gorgeous fresh fruit at breakfast and with dessert at every meal - I had never has Venezuelan food before and was impressed! Always fresh, bright, and flavorful -and neither of us had a single stomache ache the entire trip! Dont drink the water (duh), even feel free to venture off the hotel beach at Playa el Agua and pls pls trya beach restaurant farther down on the beach called Babaluba Grill Beach Club -try the ''Tostones"" appetizer, also the langostine w pasta is some of the most spectacular seafood Ive ever had the pleasure to scarf down in glee! All in all, you can''t go wrong with this resort, highly recommended by two seasoned travellers, and if you don''t speak a lick of Spanish - just go with it! Live a little! Why are you even travelling if you don''t want to experience something different from home?

Room Tip: Get a premium room in the ""Real '' section for a more lively vibe and constant (l...

When we arrived it seemed fairly descent, check in was pretty quick but no one to help with the luggage so we made our way to the room(premium room!!!!!) that was a joke......Anyway we where to tired to fuss about it,no one spoke french or english enough to understand us so we didn't bother asking for a change.Loud spanish music all the time, loud spanish neighbours the noise never stoped the entire time we where there and no one and nothing could be done.
ants in the room everywhere even in our beds,I took the sheets off every night to shake them out .The food was awfull and so was the service. There was a mini mart on site and I needed a few things so off I went to this little store I paid and waited on my change tthe clerk threw a candy on the counter and told me he had no change in the cash can you imagine! so I stood there and told him no way I want my change he actualy ignored me for a few minutes and when he realized I was'nt leaving he went in his change purse and finally gave me the correct change.
A couple days later I had to go back in and he totally refused to serve me.No one but no one spoke to us or did we even get a smile from any of the staff.
One night at the bar I went to get drinks for my husband and myself I was 5th in line out of 10 people again I was ignored after he served everyone he finally looked up at me so I told what I wanted he turned his back to me poured himself a coke and drank it then he gave me the drinks I ordered but half full.!!!!!!!!!.iT WAS PRETTY MUCH LIKE THIS ALL WEEK LONG.
Even the tour agent that is suppose to help us out didn't want to listen to the negative she just brushed me off and said she was busy with other clients for the whole day,so I couldn' be bothered I figured I would try and enjoy and I really didn't.This was for me the first and last time in Venezuela.I'm not usually a complainer .

Room Tip: the cascade area is the quietess
