“Incredible Boutique Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2007

A wonderful, relatively boutique new hotel and spa (2003) with gorgeous views of the ocean and outlying nature areas. The hotel houses about 10 guests and has a staff of almost 30. The accommodations are wonderful and the meals are better than the restaurants in town. Almost everyone at the hotel wished they had booked more days. The hotel also had great excursions which everyone raved about.

The hotel is private and secluded, and the staff is helpful and friendly. It is a perfect for a romantic getaway, honeymoon, or even a luxurious spa weekend. The hotel also has beautiful yoga facilities.

This is by far the best boutique hotel I have ever visited. I would stongly recommend it.

Meticulous attention to detail. – My vocabulary does not contain enough superlatives to do justice to Los Altos de Eros.

We have been home for several weeks now and I can’t get our wonderful experience at Los Altos de Eros out of my mind.

From the moment we arrived at Liberia airport and saw the Los Altos de Eros driver, Javier, holding a sign that said “Stephanie & George”, we felt we were among friends. This was in sharp contrast to the other impersonal signs we saw like; “Jones”, Gonzales”, “xyz tours”, etc…

Javier greeted us with a smile and offered us a soft drink after he loaded our luggage in the SUV. He was very friendly and entertaining as he drove us to Los Altos de Eros on a beautiful November evening.

When we arrived, we were greeted by friendly, smiling faces and a beautiful home made, late night snack of fresh fruits, vegetables, guacamole, and homemade nacho chips. When we retired to our room, we found our bed was turned down with beautiful orchids sprinkled across it, a touch that was repeated each night.

We awoke in the morning to the sound of howler monkeys in the forest below. During our stay we were able to get numerous shots of these beautiful creatures as they climbed through the trees each day.

Breakfast each day was a wonderful treat, sitting down with the other guest to enjoy fresh Costa Rican coffee, tea, fresh squeezed juice, home made pastries, eggs, cereal, and local dishes. The view from the dining area/living room is amazing. We looked out over the eternity pool, over the valley, and to the Pacific Ocean. Gorgeous!

We each enjoyed a massage (while the monkey’s looked on) in the spa our first day. The spa was amazing. The attendants were excellent and the massage invigorating. There is a calm, healing atmosphere at Los Altos de Eros. And the view… One can enjoy it from the comfort of the massage table, or in the hot tub.

We visited the spa several times. Our favorite, of course, was the spa day, where we spent the entire day pampered with massage, body wrap, and other spa treatments. At mid-day, we enjoyed a scrumptious meal around the hot tub. This was an extremely serene and relaxing way to spend the day.

Dinner is served at Los Altos de Eros on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Food and drinks, which are included, are available in the kitchen all day every day, but dinner was the real culinary highlight.

Joined by our hosts, the hotel’s owners, we sat down to two lovely meals with the other guests at Los Altos de Eros. It seemed that we were all gathered at a good friend’s house for a meal, rather than customers in a hotel. The personal service and intimate atmosphere are unparalleled.

We enjoyed several tours while staying at Los Altos de Eros. We took several trips in to Tamarindo to shop and enjoy the surf. This is a beautiful little town with a wide variety of restaurants, shops, and places to find a cool drink. There is even live entertainment.

We also took a rainforest tour with Hymie, which was scheduled by the staff at Los Altos de Eros. I don’t recall the name of the tour company, but Hymie is a tour guide not to be missed.

He picked us up in the morning and we didn’t stop laughing and learning until late in the evening when he dropped us off. From the time we got in the car (a Range Rover Defender – GREAT for off road), he filled us in on the history, geography, and social situation in Costa Rica. We wended our way through Liberia on the way to Rincon de la Vieja, where we saw all types of wildlife (including several different types of toucan, some wild turkeys, a white-faced monkey, and a whole tree full of coati) and enjoyed bathing in volcanic mud.

The trip back to Los Altos de Eros was just as enjoyable as the trip out. We watched the beautiful sunset over the Pacific as we toured the back roads, taking a different route back to the spa.

We also enjoyed the gym and yoga ashram, which are open air buildings with the same incomperable view to the ocean. Not to mention incredible walks through the woods each morning.

When the time came to leave, it seemed that we were leaving good friends. The staff was incredible during our entire trip and saw to it that we had an unforgettable time—in a good way. We can’t wait to book our next stay at Los Altos de Eros. I almost didn’t write this review, so I could keep the place a secret a little longer, but the service and atmosphere have to be experienced to be believed.

To the staff at Los Altos de Eros, Thanks for a GREAT TIME!!

George & Stephanie

We are seasoned travelers to Mexico and Central America and have stayed at many of the luxury small hotels of the world -- we are hard working professional people who need to get away 3-4x/yr and when we do so, we want something nice. When we vacation we do not want to meet new people, make friends, go to tourist sites, go to clubs, or do anything crazy. We typically just like to lay out by the pool or ocean, read books, exercise daily, and eat tasty/healthy food. The problems with this place and the reasons that I will not go back are as follows:
1)the place is so small and the meals are served together so you are forced to talk to other people, hear their stories, and act like you care about them. The place kind of feels like a central american hippy commune.
2)they do not serve dinner so you are forced to take a van provided by the hotel down a dirt road riddled with huge potholes to a dingy town where they seriously overcharge you for terrible food. If you decide not to go into town for dinner you go hungry.
3)they say they have a fitness center -- this is really not what I would call a fitness center--it is a palapa overlooking the mountainside that has one treadmill, one elliptical, one bench, and 3 non-maching dumbells.
4)on our last day the owners asked us to vacate our room by 10am "because they had some other guests arriving" -- can you imaging being asked to do this when you have spent in excess of $300/night to stay there -- for this amount of money you would expect excellent personal service tailored to the individual but here that does not happen -- it seems that once the hotel has been paid, service stopped.
The grounds are beautiful though -- you can see all kinds of wildlife including monkeys. The spa is also nice but is overpriced.

Where did we go wrong? What could we have “said” or “done” for this particular guest to alter his/her attitude? While the answer to those questions (from all 28 of our staff members that we showed the review to) was most definitely “absolutely nothing at all”, they are valid and important questions that we constantly ask ourselves so that we may become better at what we do. In light of the fact that this review is at the opposite end of the spectrum from every one of our other 40 glowing reviews, it seems to reflect more on the reviewer than it does our property. However, since this reviewer states that they are “frequent and experienced travelers to Central America, and only stay at the best places", we have an offer for them…whoever they are. We would like to invite them back for a 3 night, 4 day stay with us-on the house. Yes, that’s right, “Free”. So, whenever you can schedule it, we would love to have you as a guest again and we will try harder…much harder…to please you and make you happy. Keep in mind, however, it helps us a lot if you arrive a happy and well adjusted person to begin with.
