“My Heart Belongs to Los Altos de Eros”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Where do I even begin!? Los Altos de Eros is beyond incredible. My husband and I took a trip to Costa Rica for our anniversary and this place exceeded expectations. The staff alone deserves their own standing ovation, they are amazing, so friendly and accommodating in every way. Great customer service is so important and the people at this hotel really go above and beyond to make you feel right at home. The smoothies are so fresh and free-flowing, and the food was really delicious.

We were intrigued that there are only 5 rooms on the property and thought we'd go for it. We don't always like staying at the big resort type places, we like to really experience the country and you don't really get that at a chain resort. Plus, it was nice to get to know some of the locals and push ourselves out of our comfort zone a bit. The other couples staying there were super cool and down-to-earth, we stayed up drinking wine with them after dinner a couple times, swapping stories... It was so fun!

My husband and I talk about how we would love to go back there someday with a bunch of other couples and rent the whole place out. It would be like we had our own mansion with a private chef, concierge, etc. Dreamy. The pool is great, the view is gorgeous, and there is lots of wildlife. We went for a walk and saw a ton of Howler monkeys.

The bumpy road you have to take to get there that everyone seems to mention is... well, bumpy. But that's Costa Rica for you, there are lots of unpaved roads and it's worth each and every bump once you arrive.

Go to Los Altos. If you're cool, you'll love it.

Thank you so much for acknowledging our amazing staff...they have been here for years. They love working here and that's what you feel as a guest. We sincerely hope you come back with several other couples and take over the whole place...remember, now we have 6 rooms!

We spent 4 days at Los Altos in mid august for our honeymoon. we booked the trip based on the tripadvisor reviews which i must say are spot on. we loved the property, the view and overall intimate set up of Los Altos. what really sets this place apart though are Calvin, Ari, Tatiana and the entire staff who do everything possible to make you feel at home. The food was outstanding, the spa was very good, and the service was off the charts. whether it was the cooking class with Chef Monserrat., the morning walks with Cocoa, the family style dinners or heading into town for some surfing and fun, the overall stay was wonderful and we cant wait to go back. it was such a great stay that we cancelled our last night at our other hotel (supposed to be one of best in Costa Rica) in order to come back to Los Altos for the final night.

Room Tip: all rooms seemed good. was hardly ever in room but would recommend the rooms closest to the spa as...

We love it when guests leave here to go to another resort and then show up back here the next day because there is just no comparison ! You can check out but you can't leave LADE.

Just returned from Los Altos de Eros celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. Our third time to Costa Rica and cannot say enough about the resort. From the time you step off the plane until your return home you are pampered and treated like a treasured guest. My husband loves to surf and the staff accommodated his early morning requests each day, in fact offering him a smoothie or coffee before he left. Our Saturday evening complimentary dinner was delicious, tenderloin baked in the wood burning oven and each breakfast was wholesome and tasty. My facial at the spa was relaxing and the view over the valley was breathtaking. The staff could not do enough: laundry, drinks , advice. The cooking class with Monserrat was the highlight. My husband who was a little skeptical, enjoyed every minute including eating the fruits of our labor. Would return and highly recommend. A retreat at the top of the world!

"Thank you for all the great comments about our cuisine. One of the great shortcomings of most vacation destinations is the lack of really great food. That won't happen here- We now have Chef Andrea...and she is taking us to new levels!

Let me first start off by saying that when you see a place that comes so well reviewed, you might be skeptical. I booked my trip based on these reviews and couldn't help feeling that it would be "too good to be true." We spent a week here in mid-September and this place far exceeded our expectations. Los Altos De Eros is a home away from home. My only regret is not booking a longer stay. Highlights of the resort: The food is gourmet and after eating here for one night, you won't want to eat out (dinner prices are very reasonable). I informed the staff before arriving that I have a gluten allergy and they were more than accomodating. If there was something I couldn't eat, they offered me an alternative. Meals are served at the same table as other guests in the resort and we had a great time hanging out with everyone. Great bunch of people during our stay. No need to rent a car or call a cab, the drivers will take you where you need to go. The staff will set up any activities you want to do from surf lessons to zip line tours. We stayed close by and did the zip lines at Pura Aventura and the Pinilla ATV tour (highly recommend). If you like to surf, go with Luis @ Radical Surf CR. You won't be dissapointed. Each day when you return, you'll find your clothes are washed and folded in your room. Never before have I went home with a suitcase full of clean clothes! We absolutely love this place and are already planning our return. A special thanks to Calvin the owner, great job with this place. Thank you also to Ari, Tatiana, Yanina, Antonio, Mauedo, Greydin, all of the cooks and the rest of the staff I didn't meet personally. You do a great job here and made this a great vacation for us. Hasta pronto.

Room Tip: I don't know that this place has a bad room. Check the website to see a virtual tour. We loved t...

We spent 10 nights at Los Altos at the end of August. There is little we can add to the extensive reviews that have already been posted here. Los Altos is medicine for the soul. You are cocooned in a warm, fuzzy bubble for your entire stay - you feel safe, comfortable, *full* : ) - your every need is catered for. It is quiet. It is private. It is clean. It is modern but traditional. We loved the King Room as you have your own private deck with a perfect view of the ocean, forest, hummingbirds and (cute, little!) lizards. As much as we went away to spend time together, we also loved meeting new people over the dinner table - who you can spend as much or as little time with as you wish while you are there. We made some great new friends.

As an aside, we are a (low key) same sex couple and were a little wary of the reception we would get, but we needn't have worried - Calvin, Tatiana, Ari, Hanniah, Francisco, Montserrat - everyone could not have been nicer. Special mention also to Coco the gorgeous lab. I fell in love with him and cried when I had to leave.

The only minor fly in the ointment, and really this is minor, was that the treadmill was out of service. But otherwise we had the time of our lives.

Room Tip: It's really down to personal preference.

My wife and I had a wonderful time at LADE, in spite of the earthquake excitement (no damage). Staying here is like sharing a private villa with friends. The staff is amazing and Calvin is a wonderful host. All that is missing is Tattoo, but Coco the Chocolate Labrador is just as good.

The setting is spectacular, a six room villa perched on a hilltop overlooking the jungle and the Pacific several miles away. We stayed in the second floor suite...very spacious with a fabulous and large balcony overlooking the pool and jungle expanse. The first floor queen bed rooms are cozy and the king bed rooms are a bit bigger. However, you will spend your time outside. The sun and howler monkeys get you up early for a morning swim, hike or exercise. It's an early to bed place.

The food is great, prepared in an open kitchen just like a home. Breakfast and lunch is included, as is a Saturday night Costa Rican BBQ dinner. Dinner is about $35/pp and well worth it. No need to go into town each night. Montserrat is a gourmet chef and her helpers are tops. Beer and wine are complimentary and the drinks are delish and reasonably priced. Be advised you dine at a big table with the other guests, mostly honeymooners, no more than 12 in all. We enjoyed their company and made some new friends. The anti-social may be put off.

Notwithstanding the above, you can have your space and privacy. The friendly and accommodating staff will book tours for you and offer free transportation to the beach and Tamarindo. We found Tamarindo to be a slightly shady surfer town...overbuilt and with incomplete infrastructure. It gets a little sketchier at night in Tamarindo which is why the last pick up by the hotel is 8:30 pm. Surfer Party Central, dive motels with cheap eats, with a drug and petty crime problem. The better restaurants are fairly expensive. The Santa Cruz/Guatil pottery village trip was interesting and we heard the estuary boat trip was great for seeing monkeys, crocs and birds. Be advised that the last several miles are on rutted dirt roads and up some steep dirt paths. Once you are at LADE, you really don't want to leave anyway.

The spa is among the best I have visited and is half price for guests. The 4 hand coconut massage is amazing!

The staff is very friendly, helpful and sweet. They pull it off as if it was not a job. They clearly enjoy what they do and they care about the guest's having a wonderful experience in the hotel and in their country. CR is a great place.

If you are looking for a quiet, off the grid escape in a beautiful setting, LADE is the place. It's expensive, but you get an extraordinary vacation experience. Well done Calvin and staff. Hope to see you all again! Pura Vida!

Room Tip: Spring for the Eros Suite.

My new husband and I spent 3 nights here as part of our 3-leg Costa Rica honeymoon.
Most everything about this place was great. We came from a huge resort nearby (The Westin,) so it was refreshing to be in a cozy, intimate environment.

Like other reviewers have said- the service here is outstanding. Tatiana and Hannia were so wonderful and accommodating about everything we needed during our stay.

We had originally booked the smallest room (Queen sized,) and stayed there our first night. Lucky for us, since we had the whole place to ourselves (off season!) we were upgraded to the Eros Suite. I can't imagine staying in any other room but this if we ever came back. It is huge, luxurious and beautiful. I wasn't very comfortable in the Queen room and though we were making the best of it, it was a dream come true to be able to stay in the suite. I loved it!

My only dissapointment was that the Yoga studio I'd heard and seen so much about was no more. Being an active yogi that was one of the main reasons we booked this hotel. I had visions of doing yoga every morning in that gorgeous ashram overlooking the rainforest. Sadly- it's not there anymore and we had to do yoga cramped around the jacuzzi in the spa. I do believe they are building a new yoga space- but I'm not sure if it will be as beautiful as that one. Also- keep in mind that classes are $25 each. It was a great class- but I only ended up doing it the one time.

Other than that- the service and beauty of the place were a dream!! And the food was great. I am still having dreams about the seared tuna and the caramel flan. Yum!

Room Tip: I'd go for the Eros Suite if you can afford it. None of the other rooms compare!!!
