“Relaxing, peaceful stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

We stayed in a villa close to the pool at La Posada. I was concerned at first about noise however found the place to be quiet with few people about. Our room was clean and predictable, basic amenities available. Be sure to bring snack foods and beverages with you as there is nowhere to purchase these items within the resort complex. The shuttles to/from the beach club were on time. The beach is rocky, the surf can be rough. I took surfing lessons with a hotel employee..whew.. it sure is harder than it looks! The drinks and food choices on the menu at the Beach club and at the restaurant were good. I really enjoyed the fish tacos at the Beach Club and the Ceviche at the restaurant. We had a great tour of the grounds by our shuttle driver. He pointed out local birds, animals and fauna providing us with insight we would have not rec'd had we driven ourselves around. Great place to relax and hang out ..thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is inside of a big real state complex that includes access to three beaches (Avellanas, Mansita and Langosta), two hotels (JW Marriot and La Posada Inn), a golf course and a Beach Club. In my opinion, this is the best place on Avellana beach .Rooms are nice, quiet, clean and comfortable. The master suite is equipped with a full kitchen that includes a big refrigerator, blender, toaster, coffee maker, microwave, oven with stove top, pans, silverware and plates. A car is a must in order to go the beach; however, the hotel offers a complementary shuttle service. The Beach Club Restaurant offers very good food and drinks. Overall, this is a good value and a nice, safe place to spend your vacation. It's a good option for families, friends and couples.

Room Tip: Request a room that is away from the pool for a better sleep.

We have been staying at La Posada for nearly ten years now including having our guests stay here for our wedding 4 years ago. Sadly, this place has seriously gone downhill. While it was never a luxurious place to stay, the price was right and the staff was friendly & helpful- it was a very charming experience. Also, the free Costa Rica breakfast was amazing! None of those things are still true. We paid $340 for our room (we used to pay closer to $80-100 even after the renovation) The staff was just plain lazy and not very friendly or helpful. We needed help with our foldout bed (which was absolutely unsleepable) and a few other things and it took multiple tries to get help. We also had an issue with our reservation and they just would not answer the phone. We went up to the desk and the person was just sitting there not answering the phone b/c she was "on break". The restaurant has also gone downhill and the free breakfast is one egg and a small serving of rice & beans. It used to be so much food (and if you order off the regular menu, not the free breakfast menu you can still get that amazing breakfast but only if you pay for it!)
I agree with what another reviewer said about the bedding being worn, the bathrooms needing an update and the kitchen while fully stocked with appliances just felt grimy. Hacienda Pinilla is such a beautiful place so I would only stay at La Posada if you can get a rate closer to $100 and you are willing to deal with some bumps in the road. Otherwise, try to find a deal at the JW Marriott...or rent a condo...

I stayed at the Posada hotel as well as a villa with my husband and some friends and have mixed feelings about the property.
The grounds and the beach club are quite nice with an infinity pool overlooking the beach. They also make a myriad of delicious drinks and have good food to have poolside (tons of options to chose from).
Hotel La Posada:
I arrived around 9 or 10 pm and was greeted at the desk and escorted to my room. I had quite a large suitcase and was not offered help to carry it to the room. Maybe I am high maintenance, but I am used to this kind of service from pretty much any hotel I've stayed at.
The room was average. It definitely was not romantic - the bed linens were a bit outdated and the bathroom in serious need of a renovation - there was even a crack in the bathroom window.
The property is gigantic, so you need to get on a little shuttle to get to the beach club. The shuttle only runs once per hour, so if you miss it, you'll need to wait a while for the next one. Same thing coming back to the hotel. I didn't really like that I was always on the shuttle's schedule. They should have golf carts for rent, or more shuttles. The shuttle drivers were really nice and helpful though. There is only one restaurant at the hotel, so be prepared to take the shuttle to the JW Marriott which has more restaurants.
Villa:
First, it isn't what I consider a "villa" because it isn't a stand alone house. All the villas (as far as I could tell) are attached to other "villas" - they are more like large condos. The common areas were decent - fairly modern, but not luxurious. The bedrooms were ok - a bit outdated for my taste in terms of linens and bathrooms. They should have someone from the front desk come with you and explain everything to you about the villa but they don't do that. There are no supermarkets in the Hacienda complex, so you will need to drive about 20 mins to find the first one. Make sure you bring your towels to the beach club, or they will charge you to use the ones there.
It was a good overall value, but if I had to do it again, I would probably stay in a luxury hotel in Tamarindo - the town is really cute and has so many restaurants to pick from / little shops etc which Hacienda Pinilla lacks.

Lovely Hotel, nice Beach Club to use, just a pity it is on a complex, and if you are on a package, you are restricted. Could do with a shop, or a shuttle to Tamarindo, occasionally, to get a break. No complaints, we were there a week, just planned to get some bits, no go !! Back in uk today, have had a fad time, recommend as a destination.

There are quite a few aspects about this property that have the potential to be out of this world. A few things to know about this property, There are several different entities on the same property that work together, but are not affiliated beyond that. The villas on the Hacienda Pinilla property could be awesome, however, the daily maid service is basic, but decent. The maintenance of the villas itself is terrible. We stayed for 1 night in one villa, because when we arrived at Pinilla, they "lost" our reservation and our confirmation number "didn't exist." It was extremely frustrating because we had planned to visit here for a wedding and had booked 11 months in advance, and continued to check on our reservation monthly via Skype. After arguing with the front desk people at La Posada Inn for 3 hours, we were told we could stay at one villa for one night, and then we would be moved by their staff the next morning to a villa closer to the rest of the wedding party. During the move, a men's electric razer "disappeared" never to be seen again. We tried unsuccessfully 3 times to have to drapes fixed in the master suite of the villa. They did not show up the first 2 times, and the 3rd time they were unable to fix the drapes. Hello 6am, every morning on vacation. During several days of our stay, we continuously witnessed workers of Pinilla hanging out in the villas, watching TV and being loud and boisterous. If I owned one of these villas, I would be pissed to have strangers hanging out in my $800,000 property. On the last day we stayed in the villas, we consolidated with another family, and stayed in their villa, because people had come and gone by then. The villa that we were in, remained unlocked, and un-cleaned for 3 days after we had vacated. Sketchy, at best. We also stayed for 3 nights at La Posada Inn. The room was fine, the restaurant was fine, and the pool at La Posada was fine. BUT the shuttle service from La Posada was TERRIBLE. We waited for a shuttle in the front office in front of the office staff for well over an hour. After pretending she didn't speak English for 20 minutes, the girl who worked there finally said she would call the shuttle to check on it for us. She called and spoke in Spanish to the shuttle driver, and never even bothered to update us. We sat there after that for another 45 minutes, right in front of her. She finally called the shuttle driver, and the shuttle finally arrived after about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The property is beautiful, the Beach Club is awesome, and the service is great. The villas are beautiful, but the services around the villas are not even mediocre. La Posada Inn is okay, but the front desk people suck.

Room Tip: If possible, stay in a villa. They are beautiful and it feels like you are staying in a home.

There really aren't many places like La Posada at Hacienda Pinilla in this part of Costa Rica. It's a large resort and custom home community near Playa Avellanas which is still in development.

I bought a green season rate room which was a good value. I don't know if would be thrilled with the green season rates, however. The rooms are what I expected with a fridge and wet bar area.

The website is a little misleading. It makes it look like La Posada is right on the water. It is not. There is a beach club with dining and a pool that is on the beach, but it's a drive from the hotel. I think the hotel has shuttles in 30 minute intervals back and forth. The beach club was top notch with great food and drinks. The pool is awesome and will appeal to all ages.

Our particular room didn't have any outdoor seating. It would have been great to have coffee or a cocktail outside.

It's typical resort but I think there are better ones with better overall facilities for the money. I think I'll wait a couple of years to let it get built up a bit before I go back.

Room Tip: If you like to sit outside, request a room with a terrace or patio.
