“What a wonderful hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

It has been wonderful to stay in such a great hotel. The rooms are incredibly comfortable and modern, the pools and beach are delightful and the employees were extremely nice.
The buffet, both for breakfast and dinner, was remarkable, and the greek cuisine was great.
We will be back!

The real problem of the hotel is a wi-fi as you can use it only near the pool. You may ask for the cable to use it in your room but the speed is terrible. The breakfast is good but the dinner is poor. New renovated rooms are good equiped. We had a room on the 1st floor with a big problem of the smell of the stucked water in the bathroom. Beach Towels you may change only from 13.00 to 16.00 so if you come later you will not change them. The sea is storming (3-5) and permanently the red flag was shown. The territory is narrow and small+connected to the nearest hotels. And there is NO sea view! Only side sea view only on the second floor but also there is a parking opposite the windows. And at 5 o'clock in the morning the touristic busses come there and making a u-turns.

We are staying at the new section and we love our room. The staff is very friendly and we feel very welcome here. Kids love the pool and the beach infront of the hotel is so so nice. Reasonable prices, highly recommended for famillies

Stayed for 5 days in July and really enjoyed it. The hotel is new with very high standards in construction and room facilities. Classy, quiet, great breakfast, wonderfull pools and beach, helpfull staff, reasonable prices, what more can one ask?

Highly recommended.

Minos Mare Royal is a relatively new hotel and rooms are of a high standard.  They are spacious and well equipped good wardrobes , comfortable beds, suitcase storage and well fitted if slightly undersized bathrooms.

The hotel and it's facilities are for the exclusive use of it's residents but at various times the pool was used by non residents and there seemed to be little if any 'policing' over this.  Good sun beds/parasols around the pool and on the beach.

We stayed on a half board basis as we couldn't book bed and breakfast a double room was approx €200 per night.  Biggest letdown on the catering side was the fruit juices which were old style Greek not fresh and artificially sweetened -not acceptable for this type of hotel.  Having said that overall the food was good with a very good breakfast buffet.

Platanias is a 10/15 minute taxi ride to the centre of Rethymnon  and approx 75/90 transfer by coach from Heraklion airport.  Platanias is a quiet resort with great beaches with plenty of surf the downside to this is that the red flag is up a lot and sea swimming is curtailed.  If you want a beach for young children avoid Platanias - south coast of Crere eg Plakias is better with it's millpond sea.

Generally Greece is much more expensive than it used to be particularly for soft drinks - a 200 ml bottle of pepsi in the hotel dining room was €2.30.  In local bars the same drink but at 250ml was much the same.  Greek wines are of good quality those days but a reasonable wine costs upwards of €15.00 a bottle.  Our beach sun beds were included but where you are paying prices are €5-10 per day.

From the hotel website you would assume that the hotel has a great gym - it doesn't and what is there in terms of equipment (very little) is dangerous and nothing like what is advertised - do not expect to use a gym at this hotel

In summary a good hotel but the gym, fruit juices at breakfast and lack of exclusive pool use were the issues for me.  For the price paid these should have been up to the expected standard.

Room Tip: Pay for a pool view it's worth it!
