We stayed here overnight whilst attending a wedding in the area. We had expected that at £45-£55 prpn that this would be a reasonably priced option for a weekend of celebrations. We were wrong.
Between us we booked four of the five rooms available - one en-suite double, one en-suite twin, and a double and single with shared bedroom.
All of the rooms were dirty - the walls were covered in cobwebs and in some cases spiders too. The carpets had not been vaccumed recently (unidentifiable detritus all over the floor). In our room there was a selection of dead insects and general dirt in the space between the chest of draws and the wardobe. The "characterfull" bookcases and display shelves in the corridor were also very dusty and cobweb covered.
The beds where a standard double in size (which is fine), and looked clean, but felt and smelt cold when getting into bed. There were also signs of damp in one corner of the room. Some of the rooms had electric heaters in them, our room did not, and it was very quickly apparent that the central heating was not working/not turned on.
There was a lounge area for the use of the guests, with sofa's, tea and coffee facilities and a tv. This area was fine, and much appreciated, except for the fact that it, too, was unclean, and it absolutley stinks of wet dog.
The bathroom was cobwebby in the corners, there was a fresh bar of soap on the sink, but a very obviously used bar on bath/shower side. The bath did not feel clean underfoot and there was also no shower curtain/screen making it difficult to have a shower without drenching the room.
The Landlord was rude, presumptious, agressive and acted as though we were an inconvenience rather that paying guests.
The rooms are quiet enough, being located at the back of the pub, away from the road, but are obviously being run as an afterthought. It is impossible to get the doors open/closed without putting your full weight to the door, and so there were slammed doors all night. We had to sleep with an open door in the end, because I could not get our door shut. The pub itself is a nice country pub, and for an afternoon pint on your way round a pretty village it is fine, but do not stay there!
The breakfast was served at nine am or not at all, and whilst generous in volume, it was not so in quality - probably costing around 50p in terms of ingredients, with even the orange juice being diluted to the point where we could not decide if it was fresh orange or squash.
Overall this has the potential to be a pretty, cosy, welcoming b&b attatched to a pleasant pub, but it is not. It is absolutly terrible. I would rather drive the 5 hours home at the end of the night then stay here ever again. Never before have I stayed somewhere so bad in this country. I know I am repeating myself, but it cannot be said enough...Do not stay here!!
