“Friendly hotel on the friendly island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2011

We have stayed at this hotel 7 times! We spent 12 days there recently and the weather wasn't the best we have ever had but the hotel and staff were their usual friendly selves. The breakfast buffet was included in our room price and has plenty of choices including eggs, ham, cheese and wonderful pastries in the basket that is placed on each table. You can also have cold cereal , yogurt, apple sauce and fresh fruit and they will prepare items a la carte at an additional cost. The pool furniture was just replaced and is very nice. The wifi connection is a bit overburdened and is only available in the pool/reception area. There are 5 beaches that you can have complimentary chaises and umbrellas and you also have the ability to charge back to you room. These beaches vary to include all sorts of menus and tastes. The beaches are a few minutes walk down the hill, however that puts you further away from the beach bar noise and you get the benefit of better breezes up there. Each room has a terrace and a kitchen area that makes it easy to save a bit of money and dine in your room if you choose. The restaurant on premises id=s great. The food is well prepared and delicious. There are theme nights, but can always order off of the regular menu. The have a Caribbean lobster night, a Creole night and a Crayfish night. Remember to have your complimentary welcome cocktail at the bar the evening you check in, it is a delicious Planters Punch! They also prepare wonderful frozen blended drinks at the bar. The suites are lovely, but even the studios are nice. The decor of the rooms includes a Carribbean color palate and cool tile floors. THe beds are firm, but I like them that way. The hotel is not a snooty 5 star it is a friendly, comfortable place with easy access to gorgeous Orient Bay beaches and all the little restaurants and bars down in town.

Room Tip: We love the upper level both for the view and the breezes.

My husband and I just returned form 10 days at La Plantation. The hotel is nicely located on the hillside very close to Orient Bay and the beach. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived that we received an upgrade from a studio to a suite. The room was very spacious with a full kitchen. Since we were on the low part of the hill we didnt' have a full view of the ocean, but we definitely could see the water thru the tree tops. We had a large porch with two loungers and a teak table and chairs that would seat 6 people. The staff at the desk are very friendly (some more than others, but no issues) and quite helpful. On our last evening we experienced a torrential downpour just as we were leaving for dinner and the person at the desk gave us a golf umbrella to use! Breakfast each morning was fruit, toast, eggs, ham, cheese, assorted cereals, juices, and a basket with baguettes, chocolate mini croissants, croissants and pastry. There is a coffee machine that makes anything you like. The wait staff are charming and most accommodating. Breakfast is the same every morning...no surprises. We didnt' eat dinner at the hotel, but chose to drive 5 minutes to Orient Bay Village where there are quite a few restaurants from Thai, to French, American and Italian. Three were our favorites, Happy Days (burgers and salads) Tai Chi (Asian/Thai) great Pad Thai, and La Piment (excellent pizza and pastas...this place is always busy...sometimes you get a bit of "attitude" from the servers, but the food is GREAT). The hotel offers free access to 5 beaches including free chairs and umbrellas. You could walk to Bikini Beach, or drive 4 minutes to the others. Our personal favorite was KonTiki, new pads on the lounges and center of the Orient Beach area. La Plantation could use a bit of maintenance, lots of exterior lights were burned out which could be a safety issue, and be prepared for lots of mosquitos. Since there can be lots of rain and standing water which breed the critters, bring lots of Cutter...or citronella oil. The French side is much more laid back than the Dutch which was great for us. We drove into Phillipsburg to shop one day and into Marigot to enjoy the waterfront. There is a wonderful pastry/sandwich shop right across from the fruit market, near the ferry docks, in Marigot...yummy pastry and sandwiches...don't miss it!

My husband and I spent 1 night at this hotel before our final vacation destination in Anguilla.
We arrived after 10 pm, their kitchen was closing but they offered a full supper anything we wanted. They even offered us a drink on the house before our meal. Their breakfast the following morning was very good. When we left the hotel and got to our final destination, my husband realized he had left his glasses at the hotel. We called from Montreal and they were very helpful in arranging to have the glasses sent to Montreal within just a few days. We are so grateful and thankful to all at La Plantation. If we are ever in St Martin again, we will surely stay at this hotel. Thank you

We tried to book the same place we went before but there was no room and we did not mistake by choosing La Plantation instead. Great value for the money, very nice pool and restaurant, good breakfast, large rooms with a nice terrace (sort of an apartment) and secluded, friendly staff. I do not need more than this when I vacation, it is a five minute walk from the beach but they have agreements with many beaches to have chairs and umbrellas.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2011

We just came back from St Martin after spending 7 nights at La Plantation and 5 nights at Le Petit Hotel in Grand Case (review to come).
It was unclear to me what the standing of the hotel was and I was mostly tempted by the Creole style bungalows. 17 in all spread out in landscaped grounds. Each ground floor wooden bungalow is made up of a studio at each end and a 75 m2 / 750 sqf suite in the middle. The suite terrace is quite long and the upper bungalows have a sweeping sea view. This is a must for us even if we don’t spend much time in the room – to see and eventually hear the sea.
For the rest it is as indicated on TA a 3 star grade hotel or family like.
With this in mind it is somewhat difficult to criticize the hotel therefore I will list likes & dislikes.

We liked the local atmosphere of the bungalows and smiling local cleaning women: this is the Caribbean !
• We enjoyed having a large room (suite) equipped with a small European like kitchen furnished with all the necessary cooking appliances, cookware and dishes to accommodate 4 people.
• The view was outstanding from our room n° 890. The bungalows are facing the sea and are therefore turning their back to the hot afternoon sun.
• The service was very good and friendly. Although an all French speaking staff (and us being fluent) we expect the service is the same for non french guests.
• The access to the 5 neighbouring beaches where the sun chairs and umbrellas are free and meals and drinks can be charged to your room.

What didn’t turn us on:
• the back door type entrance to the bungalow,
• the mosquitoes roaming on the terrace preventing us from enjoying our drinks,
• a small pool mostly used by young children and their parents,
• the lack of Wifi in the rooms so you need to go down close to the reception area to access your mail.
• The breakfast basket includes a tiny plain croissant and a tiny chocolate one both warmed up in the microwave as well as a piece of fresh bread and no local fresh fruit drinks (syrup mix in machine). There is however a small buffet in addition.
• The hotel restaurant is OK, just OK, but smoking is permitted and there is no non-smoking area.
• The beach is long and sandy but not completely cleared of sea weeds or tree leaves, and worse, a few dogs are off leaches free to … well just watch your step!

TIP: in our opinion a rental car is a must to get around (and have great meals in Grand Case) as well as going to the beach. Cost wise I suspect the trip from and to the airport by taxi is equivalent to one weeks car rental.
TIP: we enjoyed Le Safari restaurant in Orient Bay as well as eating at Kakao beach. Also please read raving reviews of Astrolab restaurant across from La Plantation.

What a lovely hotel! Beautiful area-nice relaxed-well maintained! The beaches are really beautiful and not overcrowded! I loved staying on Bikini Beach which is only 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Buddah Bar is very nice to have lunch/drinks on Bikini Beach! The people who work at the hotel are very nice and helpfull! We really felt home...
One tip though: if mosquitos like you: be prepared! There are tons of them there so take your spray with you! The Dutch side was nice too, but much more touristic. The French side is more quiet and beautiful, I think...
Furthermore: a beautiful hotel on a beautiful island! Everywhere you see: "St. Martin, the friendly island" and that is so true!

This is really a great place. The staff is very kind and helpfull, the rooms are clean and spacious. The beds are a bit hard though and the breakfast is the same every day. But overall this was a great experience and when we are going to visit St. Martin again we will stay at La Plantation for sure!
