“Just can't better this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2011

Usually when looking forward to something it's never quite as good as you hope? Not this place! This must be our 16th stay and it just gets better and better! We eat out a lot and stay away more but we always gravitate back to estbek! Yes the food is awesome, yes the rooms are lovely and yes the hosts make it so special! Problem is, we compare every where else we eat and it's always not quite as good. This time a new starter and I can't enthuse enough, crab cakes are the new mushroom basket and the Thermidor was second to none. Try it, love it and never forget it, this place is one of the hidden gems of the Yorkshire cost!

Now come on ! reading all the reviews i`m baffled.. and that's before we have been!!!
Dave & Sue, Jim & Bob, Mira & Ian.... If you had to do a quiz and name the last 5 hotel/B&B or Greasy spoon cafe`s hosts, how would you fare ???Exactly, neither would I so, why do so many reviews mention them ?
In the next few weeks we will be seeing for ourselves the truth........Is Australian wine worth the neck ache ?
Is Tim warm.........and welcoming ?
Will we be lured away to the Fox & Hounds or,
will we leave feeling like good friends ?

We arrived full of hope – we were on holiday, this place is in a beautiful area, we were impressed by the website and had filtered out of our minds the few negative comments among the many rave reviews on TripAd. This was a mistake. Why? Although we are not rolling in money, we are always more than happy to splash out and once we commit to a place, we don't count the pennies. We are also excited as puppies to find new places, and always willing them to be great – more often than not, they are. So when even I notice the price of things like an expresso at £3.50, I know something's not right. The cheapest bottle of wine was, I think, £23, it may have even been a smidge more. Despite many, many words in the bedroom brochure about restoring the period charm to the (outwardly very handsome) Georgian building, inside, it is ghastly. I don't count a chrome stair rail as a restoration to period character. We had the 'best' room in the house, Alum. Had we not been eating in it would have cost £190. If you eat in it is £150. For that you get a not large room with the sort of units you would expect in a chain hotel, a small, but pleasant bathroom and OK breakfast featuring a most peculiar looking sausage and baked beans that did not strike me as premium brand. We stay all over the place, never on the cheap, and we have never seen such an audacious approach to pricing. However, all of these things could be cancelled out by fantastic hosts. The couple who own the place both made the same, in my view fatal, error – they talk and talk and talk AT their guests. At dinner, lovely starter, the rest, OK, the chap who looks after wine and front of house talked AT us until we had neck ache about the Australian wine trade, and at breakfast, his partner, the chef talked AT us about how they spend their money. Having contributed significantly to their kitty, we could not wait to leave and will not return.

Just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Estbek to celebrate my partner's birthday. The hens were a nice surprise - I didn't realise they had their own until I spotted them from our bedroom (Eva) window - but they meant we enjoyed fabulous poached eggs (both for breakfast and on top of my fishcake starter) and creme brulee. Everything we ate was delicious, the drinks were great (not just the wine, but the tawny paired with cheese and post -dinner cognac/armagnac too!) and the service was warm and friendly.

Having spent a long time sourcing somewhere for us to celebrate my husband's 60th bithday, I settled on the Estbek. I am so happy I did. The welcome we received from Tim was very warm and informative both about the hotel and the area.
As a previous poster said the rooms are small but perfectly formed. The quality of the furnishings and linen is excellent, and the bed is very comfortable. We were in "Nora" and had a lovely view of the sea, albeit from the half height window. It was lovely to sit on a cushion on the floor at 7 am and watch the world wake up.
The evening meal was delicious. I went for the retro dish of whitebait - these were fried in the lightest batter imaginable and were so tasty. We both had the fish pie. Do not be fooled by the word "pie" there isn't a crust or potato in sight! It is packed full of the most delicious fish and seafood and topped off with scallops. This was one of the most delicious dishes we have ever eaten.
Service was efficient and attentive but not intrusive. David and his team are happy to make recommendations if you're unsure of something.
Breakfast is served in the bar and each table has jars of homemade jam, marmalade and chutney and a jug of orange juice. The homemade bread is delicious.
Yes it was expensive for one night but the value was excellent and we look forward to a return trip.

Had another fantastic stay at the charming Estbek House. We were in the Alum room which is my favourite. The rooms are small but beautifully decorated and so cosy. We were also lucky enough to be there for a champagne tasting dinner. It was sublime! We love the place so much and feel like good friends. Can’t wait for the next trip!!

My husband and I stayed for one night - eating in the restaurant.
The welcome and overall service is excellent. The room small but perfectly formed, with a v comfortable bed and smart en-suite. The meal was everything we had hoped, beautifully cooked fresh fish and an impressive and informative wine list. The restaurant service was attentive despite the restaurant being very busy - everyone was clearly having a good time. We too have been to the seafood restaurant in Padstow. That was outstanding (we were younger and more easily impressed?). The breakfast was delicious, especially the homemade bread and marmalade.
