“A perfect place - A true highlight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

The Kelburne Mountain View Cottages are wonderful. It was by far our favorite place that we stayed in Sri Lanka - we travelled for 2 weeks around the country and wish we had been here a lot longer than the 1 night on our schedule.

The kids were welcomed by the staff and had plenty of room to play on the grounds and explore. Being American expats based in tropical Singapore - we loved the cool weather, views and being able to have a fireplace - it felt like a true holiday retreat.

Wonderful, friendly staff, quaint and cozy cottage, comfy beds, excellent made to order meals served in your own private dining room and the kids even hung out in the big staff kitchen watching them make the Sri Lankan speciality Egg Hoppers for our breakfast.

Stay at least 2 nights to rest, restore and enjoy the views. The cottages are an easy 15 minute ride from the train station and make for the perfect place to stay after enjoying the scenic train trip through tea country.

What a stunning place. By far the best place we stayed in Sri Lanka - for only two nights in the Wildflower Cottage but opon arrival we immediately were made to feel comfortable by the entire team at Kelburne. Ravi was our main man for the two days and what a pleasure he was to have around. The place was so good we just lazed around the fire inside
, walked amongst the tea plantations of the property, admired the amazing views, deciding not to go to World's End - as this simply was an amazing place, why waste the time away from it. Privacy was respected yet when anything was needed there was no issue. 'Excellent' does not do this place justice!!

I cannot fault this accommodation. We stayed 3 nights at aerie cottage and from the beginning when greeted by the staff, we realised what a special place it was. Day 1 was very misty, giving the area a mystical feel. Day 2 we looked at the view to be astonished-the clouds were sinking away revealing the beautiful landscape. By the time our delicious Sri Lankan breakfast was served on the balcony, the view was spectacular and remained so for the rest of our stay. Food was always of an excellent standard and beautifully presented. The chef always took the time to talk to us before, so we could agree what to have, and then afterwards to check everything was ok. Both the chef and the house boy provided excellent service throughout and were a credit to kelburne mountain view. The cottage itself was spacious, clean and homely-i could happily live there! The log fire and reading room were lovely finishing touches. It was a good location for visiting Horton 's Plains and Lipton's Seat. We also walked around the area-Haputale has some stunning views. We really enjoyed walking through the tea estates and also through the nature trail at haputale forest. We took the train to haputale (an interesting experience!) But that is not a quick option, starting from colombo 0555 and arriving at about 1415! It is well worth a visit- I would thoroughly recommendap it and would gladly return.

I had the extreme good fortune to make a booking for a 2 night stay
at the superb Kelburne Mountain View. I knew it would be in a lovely
location, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be confronted,
from the Aerie Villa, the complete 180 degree view of southern Sri
Lanka, even seeing the sea in the distance (about 150kms away).

Was greeted, upon arrival, by all the staff, standing in line, 2 chefs
with the chef's toques on, with a tray of drinks and wet towels in hand.
Perhaps I landed by mistake in an English Manor House? Surely I
didn't deserve this treatment?

Well, as it turns out, it WAS Sri Lanka, but it felt like a grand English
manor, the staff falling over themselves to serve you. Each of the 3
villas on the property have a "butler"allocated, and Kumar, who was
allocated to me, took care of every wish and desire, appearing when you
didn't even know you wanted him.

Dinner was cooked to your specifications, and bought to your villa, served
with panache by Kumar, and was truly delicious, a 3 course feast! The
table was set with linen, napkins, glassware, and a flower! You sat there,
regally, like royalty ... perhaps you are dreaming?

The villas are situated within a working tea plantation, with some of the tea
workers living on the property, but well distanced from the villas themselves.
If you want utter peace, tranquility, with no earthly noises, this is the place
for you! All you hear at night are crickets, the occasional frog and the cry
or birds.

The Aerie villa has 2 bedrooms, but I chose the one with the windows overlooking
the expansive terrace (where one was served their breakfast), and upon
awakening you see that jaw dropping view as you open your eyes (providing
you don't close your curtains ...)

As you sit and eat breakfast, it's hard to believe you are in a place so beautiful.
Squirrels scamper by in search of breakfast tidbits, and the crows will come to
pick bits as well ... they are quite shameless with coming to your table. In my
case, I encouraged it and enjoyed their company.

I would thoroughly recommend Kelburne Mountain View if you wish to be in a
remote and quiet place, far from any hustle and bustle.

Room Tip: I was in the Aerie Villa, but they are all beautiful

We spent one night at Kelburne Cottages staying in the Wildflower cottage. The stay was amazing and we all wished that we had been able to spend longer. Waking in the morning to the breathtaking views and a beautiful breakfast on the lawn made a unique experience and one that we will all remember for many years to come. The staff were extremely good with our son and didn't mind him running around whilst they tried to serve dinner!

we spend only one night (unfortunately) at this marvelous little paradise overlooking vast areas of tea plantations! the views are spectacular!!!! We rented the rose cottage which is a bit "tired" but rather comfortable. Dinning at our own private garden was a great experience! service was also outsanding! Thank you Koumar!!!!
