We've stayed at the Black Bull before and when I reviewed it last time I commented on late night noise from smokers sat beneath the guest room windows.I thought we'd got away with it this time and, after a long walk, we fell asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow. Unfortunately, at 2.30am we were woken by a group of teenagers laughing and shouting on the tables below our window. They had pints of beer from the pub so were clearly customers. I asked them to keep the noise down but they seemed to find this hilarious and made even more noise until about 3am!
Aside from the noise I was quite happy with our room -it was a large family room comprising of two large rooms up the rickety staircase on the top floor of the pub (Its 17 century and you can tell with the sloping, dipping stairs and floor boards!). It had a private bathroom just across the small corridor and though old fashioned (same turquoise bathroom suite as my mum had when I was a kid about 40 years ago) it was clean. The rooms seemed clean too, though a little worn in places. The room looks out over the village green and down the valley- a fantastic view.
The hotel does good food and beer and is probably the most popular in the village. Breakfast was included in the price and was Ok, if a little dry -more beans would have been good.
In summary, I didnt feel it was worth the £80 paid but that seems to be the going rate at UK B+Bs at present and I always find them overpriced. However we took the last room on a September weekend and all other accomodation options were full so maybe £80 is a fair price and I'm just tight!
