“Very nice experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

I was booked originally only six nights at Living Colours but ended up staying eleven. The bungalows are clean and spacey and the resort premises are just beautiful. The diving is absolutely world class as the reefs are in excellent condition and full of all kinds of marine life. The accommodation includes all the meals which are local style and delicious. There's even a Finnish sauna which was just finished when I was there. It's very nice to go to sauna after three dives :) And the Safety Stop bar is a must after the day's dives.

I think the resort is very eco-aware: no plastic bottles or bags are used and water and electricity is conserved. Also everybody was very careful not to destroy corals or harass any marine life.

The local dive guides were very friendly, experienced and helpful and the groups were kept small. The boats are fast and most of the numerous dive sites are located within 10-20 minutes boat trip. The shop equipment is probably the best I have had the pleasure to rent.

Bunaken island and this resort is however mainly suited for divers - I would not recommend it for non-divers since there very little to on the island do if one doesn't dive.

Booking, communication/admin & transfer
The enquiry/booking process with the resort was well managed and Mia patiently answered my many questions and worked hard to secure a bungalow for the exact dates I required. The resort was particularly helpful in confirming payment transfers promptly.
Freddy was waiting at Manado to take Living Colour guests to the island and the transfer process was managed efficiently. One thing – if you have to wade through the water on arrival, take the path through Lorenzo’s to Living Colours - it’s an easier walk than the going via the beach.

Accommodation
The bungalow itself was of high quality and I was delighted to find such a comfortable bed. The swing chair on the veranda was an added bonus and there was plenty of wardrobe/drawer/table space for clothes/cameras etc.
The bathroom was missing a mirror but this was quickly resolved. There is a plentiful supply of drinking water and insect repellent in the room.
The shower does take a little getting used to but persevere; a warm shower is possible once you’ve figured out the settings!
My only minor complaint was regarding the standard of housekeeping, which was a bit of a let down. The bathroom was regularly bleached and linens were changed regularly every third day but floors and other surfaces could have done with the odd wipe.

Diving
99% of all visitors to the resort are divers so expect the boats to be fairly busy. The guides were all friendly, experienced and helpful. The dive sites themselves were all great, plenty reef life, more giant turtles and exotic nudibranch than you could ever want, seahorses, frog fish, sea snakes, Napoleon wrasse, flamboyant cuttle fish, mantis shrimp – you will not be bored!
If you’re set on doing three dives a day you might find yourself being a bit rushed. The boats leave between 0845 – 0900 for two morning dives and return around 1pm for lunch which makes getting ready to be back on the boat for 1430 a challenge.

Food
Everyone seemed to love the food. Maybe I have high standards to me it was fine but nothing to write home about. There were an awful lot of eggs,..
Ali’s homemade bread at breakfast time was much appreciated but the biscuits from Manado were sometimes an acquired taste. If you’re a coffee drinker a few sachets of Nescafe in your hand luggage wouldn’t go amiss.

Overall
The resort has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and attracts a great mix of nationalities. Evenings are spent simply, enjoying a beer and pouring over the fish identification books. It’s a warm, welcoming place to be whether you’re travelling alone or in company. I'd go back in a moment.

My friends and I spent 4 nights at LC in August 2012. We had a fantastic time at this great resort. After doing heavy research on other alternatives on the island we decided to go with LC and can now state that it is the most upscale alternative on Bunaken.

Pros:
- Extremely helpful and friendly owners/staff
- Very good infrastructure (clean and big bungalows, excellent lunch/dinner amenities)
- The food buffet was excellent
- Very good price/quality relationship
- One of the best dive equipments I've rented. You will dive with the same equipment during your stay so you are assured everything fits and works properly.
- Very professional dive guides

Cons:
- I would have expected a bit more of the Marine Park. Most of the dives are either wall dives or muck diving. After a few dives of each it gets somehow repetitive.
- We had to insist a bit to get to a different dive site (wreck diving). Would have appreciated dive guides to be more flexible with diving spots.

Overall I can only recommend this resort and location if you are a diver (there is little else to do on the island if you don't dive).

Room Tip: Most bungalows are quite. We had number 3 and it was perfect distance to dinner terrace.

Very nice resort and location in Sulawesi. Overall very positive save for one very BIG concern; the lack of Eco-awareness; from kicking and touching live coral from staff and clients and the regular harassing of sea-life from many staff and clients for photos to the waste of natural resources. Oner client told me of riding a sea-turtle which if true...

I spent there a couple of days in August 2012 after a longer trip through Indonesia. It was really great to relax at the end of our trip. Very chilled atmosphere, nice bungalows, good food. It is quite small (only 10 bungalows or so), so after 1-2 days you know everybody there. Diving is great: equipment is good, local dive-guides are great. Most of the times the two of us were alone with the guide, even though it was high-season and completely booked out. It is not a typical holiday resort, so do not expect a large buffet, swimming pools or an extended cocktail menu at the bar. This would not fit to the island character of the place. We had a great time there and I can really recommend this place.

Spent 8 nights here in Feb 2010. Mia and Jaakko (from Finland) run this great resort, that I have only good things to say for. Great bungalows, fantastic food and good times at the "safety stop bar" with Jaakko. And then the diving. Bunaken must be my favorite place so far. The walls are to die for and then there's fantastic macro and muck diving too. We enjoyed the wreck very much (and actually the macro after swimming away from the wreck was spectacular!). Everything was organized really well and we felt very well taken care of.

We asked to be picked up from Manado airport, so it was very easy to get to Living Colours resort.

Our flight back from Manado to KL was cancelled, so Jaakko (the owner) arranged us new flights through his local contacts. That's the way to serve your customers.

If you want something else than diving, I don't think Bunaken island has much more to offer. But why would you ever go to Bunaken for anything else than diving?

Highly recommended!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

We stayed there from June 30 to July 6 2012. We decided that Living Colours is one of the best dive resort that we know of in Southeast Asia.

About the resort:
Individual bungalows give you quiet private space to relax. It is spacious and well furnished. It gives plenty shelf space and place to hang your wet stuff. Each room has its own big water cooler, so you don't have to worry about drinking water. They give you mosquito repellent and coils, which was really a nice touch. They clean your room everyday but don't replace towels unless you put on the floor, which I think very good for ecology.
The bathroom has hot shower!! Some people may think that it is too hot, but if you play right, it is nice.
The trick is you have to keep the water running until the flame stays on. Then turn first the gas lever from MAX to MIN, and only then start bringing the numbered dial down to arounfd 1". Anyway, don't give up, otherwise your shower wll be scalding hot!

Their dining area has big tables for you to socialize with other guests but there are also smaller tables if you don't want to interact with others. Food, which is all buffet, is good. For breakfast they give you pancakes, toast, egg dishes (fried and scrambled; sometimes fried and omelette) , sometime oatmeal, and fruit. For lunch and dinner, they provide vegetable, fish, meat (usually chicken) and tofu, so if you are vegetarial, you will be okay too.

You can also help yourself to complementary coffee and tea anytime of the day. There is a nice bar down by the water to hangout at, too.
Working staff are all very friendly and nice. If you have any problem, just tell them. They will fix it right away.

About diving:
First of all, the dive sites are amazing! They have amazing drop-offs and walls, as well as sandy bottom sites for muck diving. Weather was perfect for the week we stayed. Coral reefs are really healthy and you find so many different kind of fish. You can also do wreck dive and night dive. The staff decide the places to go based on weather, current, and your level, but you can also request a site (or what you want to see) and they will do their best to accomodate your wish.
The dive instructors and dive masters are all very professional. We took our advanced course there and our instructor Steven was excellent. The clear and calm water is also perfect for beginners as well.
Some guests were snorkelers and the boat takes them to good snorkeling places, too.
Their equipment are all good brand (e.g., Suunto, Mares) and are all in good shape. If you bring your own stuff, they keep them together and bring it to the boat, so it is no hassle to get on and out of the boat. They are very organized.

Some tips:
Wear shorts on arrival since you provably have to walk ankle to knee in the water from the boat to resort (depending on the day's tide)
Bring plenty of sunblock, especiallyl if you are snorkeler. Some people didn't and were burnt in back of their legs!
Most of all, prepare to have a great time with all the nice staff at Lving Colours!

Room Tip: The floor of room 7 needs repair. But that room's velanda is nice in shady in the afternoon.
