“great place lost in the middle of no where”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

this place looks like the original Disney castle except it was not built by disney but restaured by Napoleon de third as a gesture of thanks for the local making his son and heir an honorary citizen of their town. worth a visit the rooms are very quirky and strange but quite romantic with a little Jacuzzi on the roof of each of the four towers.
the internet WIFI works episodically but who cares you are n the heart of the basque country the food is great the place romantic and so ifyou are very in love do go and stay a couple of nights. enjoyment guaranteed.

We have recently spent 6 nights at Castillo de Arteaga, after having spent couple of days in the South-West France. The "chateau" is really amazing, a big plus for the owners as they managed to entirely keep the original features/architecture of the place while adding just some "flavour" of contemporary architecture. We were a fairly large group traveling with (a lot of) children and accommodation for the entire party was flawless. Breakfast is ok, dinner is outstanding and everything is reasonably priced. Very attentive service, out thanks to Irantxu (at the reception) and Igor (in the restaurant) for making oour stay so good. Overall, a small hidden treasure in an amazing place (the entire Bizkaia region is of unparallel beauty) which hopefully will stay like that for the years to come. Will definitely love to return some day.

I stayed at the Castillo de Arteaga for one night last October with my father and his wife.
I had found the Castillo by accident online and I am so glad I did!
Email contact beforehand was great, we always got very fast replies and had all our questions answered very friendly and with all the info we needed.

We had booked 2 rooms in one of the towers, one on the ground floor and the other on the 2nd floor with a private tower terrace.
The rooms were beautiful, great beds, lovely furniture and amazing bathrooms with huge bathtubs.
Arriving at the Castillo we were greeted so nice, we also had pre-ordered a bottle of cava which was already on ice in the room.
The evening was mild so we decided to take in the scenery from our tower terrace. We had had a very big and long lunch but at some point started to get a bit hungry again so we ordered a plate of lovely local cheeses and jamon.
Later on we decided to try the Basque wines, every time our waiter, Ivan, came over from the main building promptly, brought everything up to the terrace and made sure we had a wonderful time.
As I had to work a little while on vacation having an internet connection was important to me and the hotel's wifi worked perfectly in the room.
The next morning we were served an amazing breakfast with anything you could wish for in the main building.
We had a few hours so we wanted to explore the area a bit and Sorkunde, who had warmly welcomed us the evening before, served us breakfast in the morning and shown us around the main building gave us the tip to visit the "Bosque de Oma", a forest with all the trees painted in beautiful colors by a Basque artist, Agustín Ibarrola. What a great experience and a great tip!

We were really sad that we could only stay one night and wished we could have stayed longer, but we are planning another trip to the Basque Country and really hope to stay at Castillo de Arteaga again.
Not only is the hotel beautiful and the surrounding area lovely, but especially the staff, namely Sorkunde and Ivan made our stay truly unforgettable.
Working in the hotel industry myself I know how important good customer service can be and impact your experience and the staff at Castillo de Arteaga was outstanding.
We cannot wait to come back!

Room Tip: We loved our rooms in the tower and saw some rooms in the main building which were beautiful as well...

Small, intimate, quite reasonably priced for what you get. Excellent service. While you are a guest, it truly is your own little castle, with complete run of the grounds, the walls, the keep, the wine cellars - the whole place - and fenced off from general public/gawkers. Very friendly and helpful staff, eager to show off their castle. The food was was the only thing that fell short of perfection, but it was fine, and the beautiful dining room made it a great experience. No nickel and dimeing, which is nice - mini-bar, bottled water, etc. covered in price. And, oh, the sleep - quiet, dark - you can sleep forever. Huge soaking tub, spacious multi-head shower. They give you lots of candles in the room to make for a very romantic environment. A very restful place.

Room Tip: There's only 15 rooms, including suites. Ask to see what they've got - each is unique.

This small, hardly known castle hotel is simply excellent.
The location is great, away from the main roads. The rooms are wonderful, located in the old tower of the castle or in one of the smaller round towers. One of the nicest room is in the round tower which has its own little pool on top of the roof. The decoration of the room is wonderful and the room has round walls.
The restaurant of the hotel is excellent, serving local food, everything is freshly prepared. The breakfast is as good as the dinner and special request are taken into consideration.
When it comes to the service; Many of the larger luxury hotels can learn from the service provided in this hotel. The person at the reception will most likely serve you meal in the dining room. Very friendly and professional, paying attention to the smallest details.
Execellent!!!

This is small hotel (15 rooms?) that is housed in a former castle. Service is excellent and rooms are modern and comfortable. It is quite beautiful, but the smallness limits what is available here. If you want to get away for a few days, this would be fine. Biggest issue is its isolation; it is few blocks from very small village. if you have a car, you will be fine since this can serve as a good base as you tour the surrounding area. A cab to the nearest town (Gernerika (sp?) will cost you 10-13 euros.
