“One of the best places we stayed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

We loved Erletxe - it is excellent value, has a fantastic outook and a wonderful host. Our room (Grapes) overlooked the valley below. It was perfect for our needs (unfortunately just 2 nights !). Maria is so helpful and friendly. We were fortunate to be invited to share dinner with 10-12 other guests - a wonderful gesture from Maria especially as one of the guests had to spend a few days in hospital. Maria has lived in this area for many years and knows the Basque area very well. The village of La Guarida is very quaint and I couldn't think of a better place to stay if you are planning a trip around the wineries. Thankyou Maria.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the valley; book early and also I understand Maria will give you extra special cho...

We picked Erletxe because of the warm reviews and our desire to enjoy a rural part of La Rioja. Our experience exceeded our expectations. Maria has a beautiful home on the outer wall of LaGuardia. She welcomed us warmly and quickly attended to our needs, making bodega visit reservations, dining arrangements and walking and hiking advice. Her advice exceeded many hotel concierges, and she and Nicolette were always warm and helpful. La Rioja is amazing country whether you love history, architecture, wine or food. We had finished a portion of the Camino Frances at Logono and this was by far our best experience. We will return to Erletxe (the bee hive) when we return to finish the Camino Santiago and enjoy her home made honey and jams once again. Felicidades a Maria.

We had a lovely spacious room overlooking the valley but unfortunately there was a great deal of noise from a neighbour upstairs. I think the walls are very thin even though they look very very old and thick. Insulation is probably very old. Basically you could hear everything and it did disturb early in the morning and late at night. Otherwise this is a tremendous place to stay. A beautiful country house owned by a lovely lovely lady called Maria. She goes out of her way to help you and speaks perfect English. I could not really fault the accommodation but the 5 stars is for the excellent value and the sheer charm of the property and the delightful Maria. This is NOT a five star hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a valley view

Apart from the charm of the accommodation and of the village itself, it was so refreshing to find that Maria recommended both places to visit and places to eat that matched our interests and our budget. She had a warm and genuine interest in caring for guests that exceeded any commercial interest. Nicoletta was very friendly and keen to practice her English.
The long breakfast table meant that we got to know other guests.
As a previous guest has indicated, park your car outside the village first, wander the village to find Erletxe and then park where Maria suggests.

This is a magical place. After a few wrong turns involving us actually driving into the village we found this lovley place. Although it was highly recommended on TA we did not expect such a high level of comfort. Beautiful spacious room, great shower and Maria was fantastic. On our first night we asked about getting a taxi to Marques de Riscal restaurant which we had pre-booked- she said that this woudl be very difficult so took us there herself which is the most amazing service.

She gave us lots of suggestions for vineyards and places to visit and as other reviewers have said we wished that we had booked longer than 2 nights. She and the girl who works for her (whose name we did not catch I'm afraid) were concerned that I was sneezing on the last day so gave us lots of fresh fruit for breakfast to ward off a cold.
I am almost reluctant ot rate this place so highly in case we cant get in when we return!

I didn't make the booking for staying here, so didn't know anything about the town or the B&B.
The car entrance to the B&B is from outside the walled town along a narrow one-way street. One side of the building faces out, and is part of the towns' defences(!) and the other is on a narrow pedestrian cobble stoned street (all of Laguardia's streets are narrow and medieval).
The vista from the exterior windows looks over miles and miles of rioja vineyards, with villages and mountains in the distance.
The rooms are very well presented, with antique furniture and clean bathrooms. There is a lovely reading room on the first floor.
The breakfast was a lovely assortment of cheese, bread, coffee and home-made honey.
The proprietor will give you good recommendations to eat - e.g. a restaurant at the back of (what looks like) a tapas-only bar - listen to her advice!
This is a real gem, I can't really describe the charm.

Room Tip: Exterior rooms have the vista.
