My husband and I had an excellent meal at the Howgate. We hadn't been here for many years, but decided to try it after hearing good things - and we certainly weren't disappointed. On a chilly night, the restaurant was warm and welcoming, as were the staff, who were friendly and provided excellent service without being in any way over-the-top. Our only problem was deciding what to have, as everything on the menu sounded delicious. My husband had a tomato and mozzarella starter, while I opted for a goats cheese crostini, which was very good indeed. For our main courses, he chose pheasant stuffed with a haggis, which he said was a nice change from the usual chicken (although the Howgate's menu does offer this too), while I chose a venison and stilton pie. It too was very tasty indeed, although I simply couldn't finish the portion. Neither of us had any room for desserts, although the selection on offer did sound very tempting. For the quality and standard of the food and the excellent service, we thought it good value for money too, and we'll definitely be back!
