“Clean and Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Residencial Beira Rio shares its reception with the hotel (Museau) next door and is a clean, basic and simple Hotel offering a comfortable stay in a pretty location, the room had a large terrace overlooking the picturesque river gorge. Room only in February cost us just 25 euros in February which is exceptional value

Beira Rio has simple accomodations, cleaned with a very nice view on the river. The atmosphere was so quiete and relaxing, no noise, no traffic! It is the perfect accomodation with a small price. Breakfast in the terrace was fine. You are in the city center, parking is right in front of the B&B but Mertola is not big so from the hotel everything is walking distance. Staff was very kind and dinner at the restaurant on the Mertola main street was amazing!

Mertola is a beautiful town and the hotel has a lovely view of it. When we arrived we had to use the check in in the Hotel Museo next door and hefty steps up to the rooms with heavy luggage. However, the staff were very helpful and loved the fact you could hire a kayak to go down the beautiful river. Our room was spacious and had a huge terrace. Sadly, we found the breakfast disappointing with minimal choice. Overall a good choice and a great price!

Room Tip: Make sure you have some sort of terrace - get a room overlooking the river.

A nice accommodation at a little price. Clean and comfortable, located in a good place with a bautiful landscape. Residencial Beira Rio is near to the historical center. The rooms aren't very spacious. Breakfast is rich.

Beira Rio

This was our third stay here, this time with friends, and, as usual, we enjoyed it.

The rooms on the first floor of the older building and those on the car park level of the new adjoining building have very large terraces overlooking the River Gilhao and with storks flying beneath you. The former rooms have more traditional furnishings and the latter modern decor. We have enjoyed both. There is A/C, TV including English language news, and comfortable beds and bathroom. Sadly, the building of the new, and to us, ugly Museum Hotel next door and lower down the road (and which is run with the Beiro Rio, including being its reception) has taken some of the room terraces’ view of the castle, which is lovely both during the day, and at night when it is floodlit. The town walls are sparking whitewash and these and the bellower – complete with nesting storks - are still visible. The view remains amazing outside in the street; this is a cul de sac down to the river and old ferry area but traffic does use it, so be careful. The new Museum Hotel has also taken some of the Beiro Rio’s former car park but it is fine to park in the street.

Breakfasts are good do it your self – breads, toast, cheeses, ham, cake, fruits, cereal, coffee and tea.

There is a bar and restaurant at the top of the Residencial’s steep street but most of the restaurants are back along the one way street in the big square at the opposite end.

There is a tourist information centre and which links several small museums, the castle (much better and safer access than our last visit), a Roman excavation and the Parish Church of St. Mary Among the Vineyards, a 5 arched church which was originally built as a mosque.

Mertola is a good base for the southern Alentejo Plains and thus for bird watchers. Both the the iconic Little and Great Bustards live there, and the Portuguese are beginning to recognise their importance and tourist appeal

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor of the older building and those on the car park level of the new adjoin...
