“Worth more stars”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

Many hotels are rated more highly than the should be. The Hotel de France has only 2 stars, but is worth a 4 star rating. The rooms are beautifully and comfortably furnished, the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is good and the prices are reasonable. And there is a swimming pool. A great place to stay. There is no lift and the stairs are steep and fairly narrow, but the bedrooms in the main building are only one floor up.

Sadly we only spent one night in this wonderful hotel, en route home at the end of our holiday. But what a wonderful experience it was - the room was very tastefully furnished & even had tea/ coffee making facilities- so rare in France. In the restaurant we ate one of the best meals we have ever had in France - and we've had a few in our time and the friendliness and thoughtfulness of the staff and their attention to detail was 5 star. We were travelling with our dog and we're told that one small well behaved dog per room was quite acceptable (we have a German Shepherd) - no problem and she was made just as welcome as we were. A special thank you to Sally who even thought to save us a shady spot in the hotel car park so she wouldn't be too hot in the car while we had dinner. I was tempted to give the hotel a bad review as I'm just worried they may be fully booked next time we want to stay if I sing their praises too highly!

Just returned from a week in this delightful hotel. Newly refurbished in outstanding style without overdoing the links to the Le Mans racing fraternity. Its close proximity to several chateaux means it's also right for the history enthusiast. Helpful and friendly staff who speak English as well as French. The heated outdoor pool was the icing on the cake. We will return.

Room Tip: All rooms excellent - superior rooms are dedicated to racing drivers who have stayed in the past.

We have been to this hotel on previous occasions and loved the nostalgia but always a bit disappointed with the condition. However,,,,,,, really pleased it has been taken over and refurbished to an excellent standard in every way. The hotel retains its charm and French/Le Mans appeal. We stayed in the carol Shelby room, ate in the restaurant swam in the pool all of which we can definately recommend!! Sally and her team made us very welcome, and run a good hotel with a lovely homely feel. Will be back soon and hoping though you will have Air con in the rooms (as it was 30 plus outside!) Thank you!

No need to repeat the glowing reviews below...they are all true. From the gorgeous rooms to the excellent cuisine and friendly staff this hotel has all you need to make it a perfect place to stay in France. My friends and I were very impressed and will return again one day.

This hotel has a true pedigree in the Motor Racing world of Le Mans and is worth visiting any time of the year to soak up the atmosphere. Read the timeline around the bar to see all the many famous visitors that have stayed there....and not just the Motor Racing fraternity...many others too.

We were recommended this hotel by friends who have stayed there many times over a number of years. After booking we read that after many many years the hotel had been sold and was now under new ownership. We were not disappointed and were shown to the newly refurbished Stirling Moss room overlooking the square. Dinner was excellent and we very much hope to return.

Myself and three friends stopped at the Hotel de France as part of a cross-France bicycle tour. The place looked good from the online information, but it exceeded expectations by a long way. The management were so accomodating, the rooms and service were immaculate and the location/setting was absolutely beautiful. We were lucky enough to sit outside to eat on a warm evening in June to watch a thunderstorm whilst sipping the delicious local wine. The food was also excellent and the whole package exceptionally well priced. Even the breakfast exceeded expectation. The management were also very good at making sure that our bikes were securely stowed away overnight. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hotel for an overnight stay or longer. I will be back with my wife and family soon!
