“Okay Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Rooms are really small for a couple and the bathrooms also a bit on the small size. But in the end one does not stay in the hotel the whole day as the UENO area around the hotel is buzzling with life. Close to the UENO railway station and many interesting shopping streets as well as the UENO Park. Plenty of good restaurants around five minutes walk from the hotel and.....the hotel is located in a quiet street so no street noise can be heard. Breakfast choice is okay.

Service was average, but the rooms are very dirty, bathroom had stains and mildew, smelled like mildew as well. Refrigerator and tea pot also dirty. Location to Ueno station is about a 10 min walk. This is the equivalent of a motel 6, but dirty.

Upon arrival we were disappointed to find surly staff at the front desk. The decor is tired with multiple scuff marks on the walls. We took a semi double room and can confirm that you get a 4ft double bed, which was fine if you pull the bed slightly away from the wall. The room was much bigger than expected with a comfortable seating area which we used to keep our big suitcase open. Biggest hotel bathroom in our Japan tour.

- From Ueno stn, take the Asakusa exit and cross the road under the flyover towards Kinkos & Sunkus. Follow the main road until you see Lawson store on the left & a big red Tori gate on the right, take a left into a small road then first right.
- Lovely shampoo & conditioner (Royal jelly with olive oil by POLA). Sounds disgusting but smells great.
- Kettle and small Japanese tea cups (150ml) in room. No coffee or English tea provided.
- SENTO! This hotel is across the street from the local sento bath house. They have one bath which changes everyday! From sake to a rich purple (grape?) bath. 450yen entrance. Just turn up with your hotel towel. The small outdoor bath was awesome esp when it snowed one evening. Very popular with locals and they are incredibly friendly. Open from 12:30pm till 1:30am.
- Cheap eateries within 2 mins walk on Asakusa dori. McDonalds, Yoshinoya, Sukiya & plenty of Mom&Pop restaurants. 280yen for a small bow of beef and rice, bargain!

Would I come back again? No I was not enamoured with the staff and the 90's room decor. However if you get a good deal, go for it. The location is great as it's 5 mins walk from Ueno stn/ 7mins walk to Keisei Ueno stn for the airport train.

Room Tip: Request a room away from the lifts/elevators, as you will hear the annoying 'Ding' everytime...

Not sure why people kept saying the room is small, but for me it is standard 24Sq meters. You can move around fine. The hotel also deserve better star rating from tripadvisor it is definitely not 2.5 stars, it is at least a 3.5 stars, here's why:

Service - Top notch, staff can speak English and are helpful if you ask for directions.

Value - Really good

Sleep Quality - comfortable twin size bed (120cm)

Cleanliness - Generally really clean.

Location - Located really close to Inaricho station (5 minutes walk), that's all the advantages because the area lack any food choices, but from Inaricho you can go to Asakusa temple really easily!

Rooms - Average sized, clean, all smoking rooms (but ours doesn't smell, just open the window if it does). Be sure to ask for a FREE wireless router at the check-in counter so that you can get free WiFi in room which is a big plus!!

This was a nice Hotel at a resonable price based in Ueno. Room was quite small but within Tokyo standards and a short walk from Ueno station with direct access to Narita. Also a 15 min walk to Asakusa Sensō-ji Temple and 2 mins from Inaricho metro (Ginza Line).

Stayed at this hotel for 1 night while visiting Japan in December. The location is good, very close to the JR station once you find it (Tokyo streets have no names and the hotel is located on a small street that nobody seems to know). The service is great, room was clean except for a little mold in the bathroom, and very, very small (even for Japanese standards). It felt more like a cabin on a cruise than a hotel room.
