“Comfortable and cosy great value ryokan experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

We stayed here on our final night in Tokyo as a change to more standard hotels in more central areas. We were glad we chose it, right in the middle of beautiful Asakusa, a stone's throw away from Senso-ji and the tourist shopping street, but far enough not to be bothered by any noise. The staff were friendly and helpful and let us drop our bags off early before check in so we could explore the area on foot.

The room was Japanese style, and quite spacious in our experience with 2 separate areas: the futon bedding area and the seating area with tea making facilities. The bathroom was small but very clean and we were provided with dressing gowns for using the onsen downstairs, which could be used privately. This was a nice, welcome surprise after our long walks around the old areas of Tokyo.

Breakfast was adequate with eggs, salad and bread with jam and coffee, and not bad value, but it's worth noting there's a Starbucks at Asakusa station very close by too as another option.

Overall, a nice refreshing change from modern Tokyo hotels.

Stayed here for my final night in Japan during a three week holiday and it was fantastic.

Staff were pleasant, cheerful and helpful and the room was spacious and comfortable. All mod cons in the room too. The futon was brilliantly comfortable.

Easy to get to from Asakusa metro station which is on the Ginza line. Take exit 1 and you'll come to a tourist info sign. If you go right, follow the sign for Kaminarion (Thunder Gate). You'll see the Torri gate on your right surrounded by tourists. Walk past this and carry on to the next crossroads. Go down here and the ryokan will be down a road on your right near the end of the road.

Highly recommended.

This ryokan is a very short walk from the Asakusa metro station and bang in the center of this charming part of town with the Sensoji temple. Yes, the rooms are small and expensive for that but hey, this is Tokyo.

The room has a screened sitting area that we could use when the kids slept early. We had 3 futons for 2 adults to share with 2 young kids but the benefit of not having 4 futons was a bit more space (and the sitting area cannot be screened off if you have four futons). There was some storage space in the back of the sleeping area.

Our kids enjoyed soaking in the public bath they have on the first floor and got kid sized yukatas which thrilled them greatly.

The older staff are more reserved and speak little English but tried to be helpful. Breakfast was okay - something to lean on for your first night and/or if you don't want to schlep out for your first cup of coffee.

In general we enjoyed our stay here though doubtless it is a pricey place especially as this definitely does not qualify as luxury accommodation.

We stayed for three nights in mid - March 2013. The location is just meters from the main strip and Sensoji Temple but is very quiet. Asakusa is a beautiful part of Tokyo for visitors and captures old Japan so you can safely walk around day or night.

The shopping and street food is also great.

The rooms are Japanese style and the futons are comfortable which isn't always the case in these types of accommodation. It is family run with the grandma sitting in the front entrance, all are nice though not great English. Certainly no communication issues though.

The room was very large and you could come go as you please. There is a cafe down stairs which is so so, but go elsewhere for breakfast and meals.

Wifi is available!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Great to be located in this fascinating part of Tokyo. It was actually our first time in Japan and obviously first time in a Ryokan, so a totally new experience. This seemed to be a small hotel of ryokan rooms, rather than a stand alone privately run ryokan that we stayed in later on in the trip.

I have never been comfortable sitting on the ground / floor, let alone cross legged or with my knees folded (not even at a young age) so found this aspect quite difficult and inconvenient. It was also difficult with two young children trying to keep things out of reach.

There was also nowhere to really store our luggage, so some stayed out in the hallway and with 4 futons laid out on the floor there was no room for anything, so we stashed one away and the 4 of us slept on three which was not an issue as the kids are only 2 and 5 yo.

The young female staff were extremely helpful and friendly and spoke very good English. The older staff I found very much more reserved.

We didn't eat here in or 3 day stay, breakfasts we had not far away in Dennies (recommended by Kamogawa) and dinner was normally on the run or takeaway noodles etc.

All in all I would have to say that the stay was a bit difficult with 2 young children and the extra luggage that goes with a young family. Somewhere larger for us would have been much more comfortable. If it was just us as a couple it would have been quite adequate.

Would love to stay in the Asakusa area again and further explore all it has to offer (a couple of days was just not enough by the time we took in Disneyland and a shopping expedition for snow gear for later in the trip) but probably would look to stay somewhere more spacious if we had the kids with us.

I wanted an authentic Japanese experience and so decided to stay in a Ryokan. This limits the areas of Japan you can stay in quite considerably as the Ryokans seem only to be found in the older, more traditional areas of Tokyo such as Asakusa. After extensive research I selected the Ryokan Kamogawa due to its location (very close to the must see Sensoji temple and easy access to the Ginza subway line) and the fact that you could use it's Sento bath privately. Not fully understanding the etiquette of such baths, I knew I would be more comfortable using a private bath.

Whilst it was on the cheaper side of most of the Ryokans that I investigated, staying in a Ryokan shouldn't be seen as a cheaper alternative to staying in a Western hotel, you can get hotels for the same price. You are paying for the experience and in my opinion it is worth it.

I found all the front of house staff to speak very good English although like most Japanese they seem to be very modest about their ability in this respect. They went out there way to help me, for example on my first evening when I enquired about somewhere to eat, the receptionist took me out and walked me around the local eateries explaining what each offered.

The hotel provides towels (apparently not all ryokan do), a kimono, slippers, a razor, tooth brush and plentiful shampoo, shower gel and face wash. This was especially useful for me as the airline lost my luggage for 48 hours.

There is no English speaking channels on the TVs but there is a brilliant wifi signal in the rooms to keep you entertained in the evenings.

In terms of locally eateries one of the best Tempura places in Tokyo is just round the corner (Daikokuya) and Mos burgers is a wonderful Japanese alternative to BK or McD's.

The shopping strip on the lead up to the Temple is overpriced, just stepping out into the side streets off the strip can lead you to a 50% discount!

I thoroughly recommend a trip to this Ryokan and I hope to go back myself next time I am in Tokyo.

Room Tip: I had room 205 on the second floor. As a solo traveller the room was actually pretty big. 2/3 people...

If it is your first trip to Japan, this is a good Ryokan to stay. It is reasonably priced and is literally steps away from one of the most famous locations all the tours will take you -- Asakusa. The rooms are actually on the larger side of what other ryokans will offer. It is very comfortable and staff are very helpful. There is a little cafe that also belongs to the Ryokan so it's convenient. As you step out of the ryokan, you walk into the middle of the Nakamise shopping district which leads you to the very famous Sensoji Temple. No tour would be successful without a stop in this location -- and you're right there! You can also see the recently opened SkyTree (that surpassed the Tokyo Tower in height)... a beautiful view at night. We walked outside very early morning where stores were closed and the area is safe at night/dawn.
