“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

The Park Side Hotel

Located to the south of Ueno Park, this small hotel has been my Japanese home for years. While the location is amazing – less than 10 minutes from the Ueno station – there are some issues with this house of charm.

Firstly the staff are capable of being extremely short and rude. While this is virtually unheard of in the hospitality industry, the staff – and one assumes the management – have mastered this trait.

The rooms are generally pleasant. All are smoking, which is somewhat of a drag for the non smokers. While the immediately visible room is quite clean, if you move a few things you will generally find a lot of dust and uncleaned surfaces. During one visit I turned over the futon, only to find it terribly stained and dirty. They replaced it immediately.

During one visit to the hotel I left a Mont Blanc pen on the desk, which went missing immediately. Yes it is my fault, but how do you lock everything down. Now I have a system – Do not disturb signs most of the time.

All of this said, it is a great price.

Spent 3 nights at hotel we had used on previous visits some years ago. Reserved twin room as offers more space at modest additional cost. Fairly easy to walk from Ueno JR (a major junction), 10+ minutes, shorter walk to Keisei station (not a JR station) and its fast direct services to Narita airport (Y2400pp); there are also other nearby subway lines. Reception area doesn't feel like one but more bottom of an office block. Staff fairly responsive and efficient. Luck of the draw whether you get a smoky or non smoky room, ours was smoking but no trace of smell. Our twin room was a little tired but an upgrade going on and doubles have been done (or so I understand). Nevertheless, spotlessly clean as is usual in Japan. Plenty of space for 2. Adequate bathroom with usual accessories and with plenty of hot, strong water pressure. Modest wardrobe space for 2, fridge, TV with plenty of channels but all in Japanese. View over the park (at extra cost) but ask for at least 7th floor, 5th is on line with a/c units and park's outdoor entertainment block. We had requested park view and given 5th floor but staff did work hard to change it to 7th floor. Free wi-fi only works in the lobby and was fine for my UK smart phone. At rear of hotel is a well known "entertainment" area with masses of bars/restaurants. Doesn't feel edgy although some women may possibly not feel at ease. Didn't have breakfast in ground floor Italian restaurant that hotel uses but prices seem reasonable. Expensive Chinese restaurant on top floor and overpriced bar. Would certainly use again.

Room Tip: Request at least 7th floor for park views (at extra cost)

The Hotel Park Side is a good option for the weary traveller.

Friendly and professional, the staff can help you with almost anything you need. I found their English is a little limited but is still more extensive than my Japanese, and we got assistance with everything we needed during our stay.

Having just got off a 14 hour flight and train transfer, the first thing you want is a shower, and this hotel delivers in spades. Hot, strong water in a nice deep shower room.

The hotel bar on the top floor has a wonderful view of the park and lake across the road, and some excellent whiskey`s, including one from the Mount Fuji region.

I tried to stay here again nearing the end of our trip, but they were fully booked.

The only thing to note (which they can`t do anything about short of physically moving the hotel), is that Ueno is about a 30 minute JR Yamanote line train ride away from Shibuya, Harajuku etc. Not a big deal for us, but if you were madly trying to do a few things in a short space of time on the other side of town, its worth considering whether you`d want to stay here or somewhere closer as the JR line can be busy and tiring.

The only other consideration is they don`t seem to have smoking and non-smoking floors, so some our non-smoking room had a very slight smokey smell to it initially, but soon cleared out once the aircon was on.

All in all, a good experience and a good value hotel.

I stayed here for 3 nights in December, 2012. Had a twin room, which turned out to be a smoking room although they didn't ask me at check-in whether I wanted smoking or not. The room was pretty smelly from old smoke but other than that it was pretty decent. I had a nice view of Ueno Park. The desk personnel were very friendly and spoke English fairly well. The breakfast was quite good. I would stay here again because it was a good deal for Tokyo and in a great location.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-smoking room!

We recently stayed there for a night in the standard twin room. When we called the front desk for an extra bath towel and a pillow, the reply was simply 'no'. We was very surprised by the answer, so we thought that they might not have understood our request, hence, we repeated the request. The reply is still 'no' and the staff even added an impatient 'ok?' We were very shocked by the rude reply.

I have stayed there alone during winter just a month ago, and it was of good value. if travelling via keisei skyliner from Narita, its just about 5 mins walk away , 10 mins if you are with luggage. an extra 3-5 mins to the JR lines and subways . left my luggage there since it was before check in time, when i returned and checked in, its already in the room.
the rooms are small but comfortable. as in many places in Japan, it is clean. it is in a happening area(Ueno), opposite is Shinobazu pond and a bit further, Ueno park and zoo. behind(not directly but a bit to the side) is a small pub/red light/night life area , may worry about noise but dont worry about safety, Japan is a highly safe country.
will be staying there again in 2 months time for spring.

This is an old-school business hotel... renovated, comfortable, well-located, but old-school.

The building must be around 30-40 years old, but the front looks out over Shinobazunoike (Ueno Park's lotus-covered pond), which is a great view. The lobby is gloomy and a bit cramped, but respectable. Check-in was efficient, and as usual in a business hotel, you pre-pay.

The room was a good size (reflecting the hotel's age), plain, but quite well equipped with cabled internet (free - and free wifi in the lobby), a kettle, and a good sized bathroom with a long bath. I had a twin room that overlooked the park. The bed was a little too soft but I still slept well.

I didn't eat in the hotel, but there are three restaurants attached (and hundreds within a 5 minute walk). I did have a drink in the bar on the top floor, which was like a 1960's period drama - dark, armchairs, bow-tied waiters, bottles of whisky, ashtrays - and a hefty cover charge for a quick beer.

I should mention the neighbourhood. Right behind is Ueno-hirokoji, one of the major nightlife areas in Tokyo, choc-a-bloc with bars both respectable and not, restaurants (from fast food to memorable), as well as soaplands and other pinkish entertainment. The next door area is Yushima, renowed for its hourly rate hotels. This is Japan so it's perfectly safe, even for a single woman, but your business associates may snicker if you tell them where you stayed. However in front is Ueno Park, with the Metropolitan Museum, half a dozen other museums and galleries, the zoo, and avenues of cherry blossoms, and a short walk away is Tokyo University, at the top of Japan's "Ivy League" of universities. It's a great combination of contrasts for a tourist.

There's also the Keisei Skyliner to Narita Airport, faster than the JR Narita Express, so this is very convenient for pre- or post-flight resting.

Check out was very straightforward. I didn't have breakfast - it's a buffet in the attached Italian restaurant and was very crowded - but there were half a dozen options open in the early morning on my way to the train station, all good (and cheaper!).

This is a solid good quality hotel, a little faded, but comfortable and well located.

Room Tip: spend a little more for a room at the front - or splash out a lot for the rooftop suite with its out...
