“Didn't learn much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013 via mobile

This would've been a good experience if we had already known a lot about Japanese history. As we didn't, and went there learn more, we were very disappointed. There were many artefacts to look at which were beautiful however they didn't mean much without the history. For instance, the sign on some old armour was "armour" and an estimated date. (there was more in Japanese but we couldn't read it)

“Lovely building average collection”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Considering it's one of the biggest and most popular museums we expected a lot more. Not too many galleries to view and unlike museums in the west, details in English are limited. It does have some good artifacts (especially liked the Noh and kabuki masks and costumes) although given the vast history of this civilization I wonder where the rest of the collection is..

“A one shot smack of Japanese history and Culture”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

When in Rome.. well Tokyo in this case you need to see why the place ticks the way it does. A visit to the museum will give you that overview , from wall hangings to collectibles there is plenty to get excited by. And if you are visiting ... the toilet seats are heated!!!! so its an all round good experience

“Wider appeal than most museums.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

The same site has several distinct buildings housing quite different things. The main building (Honkan Japanese Gallery) looks austere from the front, but is perfectly designed for its job and behind it is a lovely garden. ALL the exhibits are good: the swords, ceramics, dress, but the netsuke display is mind-blowing. Mainly carved from wood or ivory, amber is also used.
Another building, the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures is a purpose deigned, modern building with some exhibits dating back to the 7th & 8th centuries. Exquisite work. This is a must for anyone interested in art and history.

“Just ok museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

Lovely location but the museum itself is dark. I've been to many better museums so considering this one is the largest, it's somewhat disappointing.
