“Great visit to Zoo in Tokyo. Awesome penguins!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

Our trip to Tokyo wasn't complete without a visit to the Ueno zoo. It's located close to the Ueno JR station, so easy access from downtown Tokyo. There's a wide variety of animals including Giant Pandas and a fantastic Penguin open air exhibit. This is definitely an affordable family attraction and you could easily spent 3-4 hours there. They have a snack bar and excellent gift shop. It's a must see attraction when visiting the area.

“Pandas :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

They have giant pandas! In Europe, just 4 Zoos have giant pandas, so I've never saw one before. It was really nice to see them!
The rest of the zoo is also really nice. Especially the lake which is covered with water lilies.

“Run-down and cruel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

To be honest, I didn't expect the world's largest enclosures upon my visit to Ueno Zoo. However, i was unpleasantly surprised by the poor condition of the animals and their enclosures.

Monkeys are kept in tiny enclosures without any greenery.

The polar bear is kept in direct sunlight. Why does the bear not have access to a 'cool room'?

They keep bears in tiny enclosures which show obvious signs of boredom - i.e. continually moving in same spot.

The hippo enclosure has concrete a tiny pool of water, absolutely no grass/dirty or greenery whatsoever. The pigmy hippos have a tiny pool of water (size of a bathtub) so clearly cannot swim.

Was extremely disappointed with the way the animals are kept at this zoo. Perhaps charge more than 600 yen entry fee (for adults) and build decent, humane, new closures for all the animals.

“Great variety, must visit for kids!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013 via mobile

Close to the JR station of the same name, an easy walk. A great zoo (even if a bit dated in some aspects). The attention to trying to draw the animals to the front of their display area is great - we were there during polar bear feeding and were all very entertained, including our 6 year old. We had a great time, it's a big zoo with a lot to see. The only zoo we've seen naked mole rats at!

“A little zoo in midst of the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

We were there in June 13 & found the idea of a huge park equipped w. Thith a zand and tucked in the midst of Tokyo city alluring.

Now we are talking abt shopping and residential areas surrounding it so that we found a lil queer.
Nevertheless, we visited on a rainy day and the zoo was not as crowded as it seemed on other days based on reviews. But we were quite lucky to witness up close and personal, the feeding of the Giant Panda and the humongous Sea Lions. Thus far, entertaining.

The zoo was filled with substantial animals, again, for a city zoo. It was broken up into east and west garden so be ready to spend minimally half a day at least. In order to get to the other side, visitors can take a cute and colorful monorail but this costed around 200yen per pax which we thought should have been made free.

The highlight for us was the enclosure for the beautiful giraffes with pretty and healthy fur. The enclosures were roomy enough for the few of them to gallop a bit and this sight we have yet to see in other zoos we visited. Especially when it is so near and the only thg which separates us from them for like 20-30m were some glass panels. Surreal...if only we could have touched them!!!
