“Clean, affordable and convenient”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

I stayed for 8 nights and was very pleased with all aspects of my stay. Convenient to Nippori station and subway and finding my way to the Ryokan on my first day was easy. The royakan is very clean, quiet and well run. Yanaka is wonderful and to experience this area of Tokyo is highly recommended.

I moved from a different location to stay here. For about 9 days I stayed and enjoyed the friendly staff, the clean and cozy room, and close proximity to the subway. for a first time visitor it made it easy to find my way around! I will be returning here on future trips and recommend it to friends.

Room Tip: i stayed on the second floor facing the street...was quiet and slept well.

My sister and I stayed here for our last three nights in Tokyo before heading home in mid-late April.
The ryokan is located in a lovely little area called Yanaka, Nippori. Just a ten minute walk from the Nippori station, only 2 minutes from the Sendagi subway station. Nippori is also on the Yamanote line which is highly convenient.
The staff were very friendly, we received an incredibly helpful map of all the main shops and restaurants in the surrounding area upon check in.
The room was very large, especially since it also has its own ensuite. The beds were quite comfortable - the only drawback was that there are no curtains and we were woken up with the sun every morning.
We highly recommend an okonomiyaki restaurant called Konoya, and an izakaya pub called Hakkenden which are quite close by.
There is a post office just around the corner with an ATM which is good for those with international cards.
The Keisei Skyliner for Narita Airport is accessible from Nippori station, which makes it a great place to stay for your final days in Tokyo.
Overall a very comfortable and convenient stay in a lovely area.

Great location, and the staff are wonderful. Very clean. The location is the best part, with Sendagi and Nippori right there. The neighborhood itself is beautiful as well and a welcome change from other parts of Tokyo.

Pros:

Location, location, location! What a great spot, so convenient for the Skyliner to/from Narita, Yanaka is a great little part of old-Tokyo that was very comfortable and easy to navigate. The ryokan is a 5 minute walk to the Sendagi station, with direct access to central Tokyo. Also, there is a little bus service which goes around the immediate neighborhood, including Asakusa, Ueno Park and Kappabachi-dori. And plenty of restaurants to keep us busy!
Clean and trim ryokan - not very traditional, more of a modern look to this ryokan. Our room was small-ish, but fit the 4 futons well, and the bathroom was spacious by Japanese standards. We took the staircase most of the time, but the facility also a small elevator.
Friendly staff - the front desk folks were helpful with local maps and guides to make our trip successful.

Cons:

As mentioned above, not a traditional ryokan, more of a Japanese-style hotel. Worked great for us!
No onsite ofuro (Japanese soaking tub) but there are a few nearby public bathhouses
Skip the breakfast, you can do much better elsewhere

Overall, we recommend this ryokan for visitors to Tokyo!

We spent two nights at ANNEX KATSUTARO just after a stay in a "top class" hotel in Ginza. Beleive me, the choice to move to a ryokan and to Annex Katsutaro has been the best decision we could take. Very, very good location, good service at a correct price. We appreciated also the fact the we spent two days just walking without having the need to use metro or train! Simply .... the best! I hope to have the opportunity to stay again here in the future. GRAZIE!

I'm an Aussie who has been to Japan twice before and a Japanese friend sent me the web link so I decided to give it a try. Traveling from Narita to Nippori station placed me within easy walking distance through a car-free street of the local neighbourhood which includes a good variety of shops and cosy restaurants. The staff at Annex Katsutaro were very helpful and keen to explain details about the district which greatly assisted orientation. The rooms are simple but well appointed and clean with access to free wi-fi throughout the building. This is exactly the type of place I like to stay and sleeping on tatami mat was just perfect. Next time I visit Tokyo Annex Katsutaro will be my first preference for accommodation.
