I travel a lot and have stayed at a wide variety of hotels over the years, including several claiming to be among the best in the world. While that is a subjective assessment and each hotel tends to be weighted towards one particular aspect it enjoys - location, history, atmosphere - service always ranks as the overriding quality that can make or break an experience.
My stay at the Park Hyatt was over a weekend sandwiched between business trips elsewhere in the region and my main objective was to enjoy a hassle-free weekend visiting museums, eating well and attending the final days of the September sumo tournament. I had heard great things about the hotel and had previously stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills.
The hotel's concerge was extremely helpful in getting me tickets, making restaurant reservations in advance (and suggesting alternatives to restaurants when they were fully booked at the requested times) and arranging my airport pick-up. When I arrived at Haneda a representative met me after customs, took me to my taxi and sent me on my way. When I arrived at the hotel, I was greeted by name at the entrance and all my luggage immediately taken up. Check-in was impeccable with all my earlier requests being addressed and finalized inobtrusively.
My room was immaculate and had great views of the city. What was truly exceptional was the level of detail put into the layout and design. Everything was where it should be, from light swtiches to plugs, chargers etc. The cleaning staff was also attentive, and the alarm clock and bottles of water were moved to the appropriate side of the bed based on how I had slept the previous night. Everything was just right - a real Goldilocks moment. I also appreciated the way the TV's welcome channel had nice scenery and very soft soothing music instead of the awful annoying tunes they sometimes play. Even the room door closed softly, My only complaint was that I coul dhear the guests above me when they started to move furntiture around late at night but that only lasted a few minutes.
The hotel provides convenient shuttles to and from Shinjuku train station/metro every 20 minutes, which is helpful. Whenever I took a taxi, the door staff made sure the driver knew my destination and they provided me with Japanese language instructions to my destination and back to the hotel. When my car reservation to the airport was inadvertently not confirmed, the hotel's management provided me with a Mercedes limo as a courtesy.
The restaurant was excellent as was the bar - although it is very crowded and happening unlike in "Lost in Translation" which takes place here. I even had a free meal compliments of the hotel. The lunch menu was limited but the food was really exceptional - even the Caesar salad was better than any I had tried in a long while.
The gym is a jewel - a lap pool with views of Tokyo and both an aerobic studio and modern wieght room. The staff was courteous and helpful everywhere I went.
I will definitely come back to this place again as it embodied the best of Japanese service in every way.
