Overall impression of the KEIO Plaza - pretty much perfect location for us, non-spectacular but very spacious room, adequately friendly and helpful staff.
Location: It's slightly less than a 10 minute walk to the Shinjuku station (more or less depending on which line you want to take at the station), which is a super convenient station to get to almost anywhere. Better still, it's only about 2 minutes to get to the Tochomae Station (pretty much next door to the hotel) on the Toie Oedo line. Tochomae is probably not as central as Shinjuku Stn, but we found the Oedo line very useful too. But more than just subway/train stations, the hotel is located within walking distance of pretty much a whole lot of department stores, specialty shops, convenience stores ... well, everything. And perhaps the best part of it is that it's located on the west side of Shinjuku where you can actually enjoy some peace and quiet after being bombarded by the sights and sounds of East Shinjuku.
Rooms: Although we were placed in a room located in the old wing of the hotel, we found the room comfortable and clean. Also, it was definitely spacious enough, and not at all like the tiny can't-place-your-luggage-anywhere hotel rooms we've heard about elsewhere. It wasn't as modern or stylish looking as the rooms in the new wing (as seen on their website), but we weren't looking for luxury, so the room was more than adequate. The beds were a tiny bit on the lumpy side though, but nothing major. The smoking room we had to accept turned out to not smell very much of smoke, so that was a plus for us.
Service: Slight complaint - even though we had requested a very long time ago (and apparently received confirmation) that we wanted a non-smoking, double room, they had neither available at check-in, and so we had to settle with a twin/twin smoking room for the whole week. Because the room turned out to be not that bad, it was no huge deal. The staff were pretty much all friendly and helpful, and most of them spoke and understood English just fine. There were many choices of restaurants within the hotel, although we did not actually try any.
To sum it up. If you are looking for low budget accommodation - this is not it. If you want quaint, traditional accommodation with that personal touch - this is not it. If you are seeking luxurious, modern and spectacular accommodation - this is probably not for you. But if you want a moderately-priced (by Tokyo standards) hotel with spacious, clean and comfortable rooms, and a convenient location (depending on where you want to go), then the KEIO Plaza should be there on your list.
