“Quiet little inn...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013 via mobile

This was our first stop on our two week whirlwind trip around Japan. And it was great. The guys who run the place are the epitome of Japanese service. They are so friendly, so willing to help. It was fantastic.

If you're hoping for 5-star experience this isn't for you. But if you want a small simple friendly inn then I think that you can't go far wrong.

Great location too. One stop from Shinjuku or a ten minute walk. Great good options all round too.

Staying in this hotel and eating close by is very much like living like a local. And that, I love.

With a Japanese style room it is a bit cramped (but manageable) for two people, suitably clean, the staff friendly and knowing enough english to make our stay easy. Located one stop away from Shinjuku on the train was superb; the train station about 4 mins walk. The toughest part was working out how to use the toilet (it was one of those ones with lots of buttons and fun to play with)!

Shin-Okubo Sekitei provides great value for your money. It's situated down an alleyway off the main street that's right between the JR Shin-Okubo station (on the Yamanote line) and the JR Okubo station. There are 2 7-Eleven locations nearby, so finding an ATM is effortless, and so many restaurants line the main street that you need never starve.

We stayed in a Japanese-style room for four nights and found it very comfortable. The room has a fridge, hot water pot for tea, TV, heating/cooling unit, and plenty of power outlets.

Part of the reason why the room rates are so reasonable is that they ask you to lay out your futon, which is conveniently located in the storage closet in the storage room. It's pretty fun rolling out your bedding every night and putting it away in the morning. They'll provide more cushioning if you find the standard futon to be too hard.

Reception is very helpful, even if their English is limited. They were able to direct us to nearby points of interest and suggest alternatives when our ATM cards didn't work.

Definitely would stay here again.

There’s not a lot of information about the Shin Okubo Sekitei on Trip Advisor, so I was a bit worried about what the hotel was going to be like. Turns out, it’s a pretty good place to stay! The hotel is located a 3 minute walk from Shin Okubo station, which is on the Yamanote line (this takes you to all the major stations like Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro and Tokyo Station) – very convenient indeed. Also, Shin Okubo is actually known as “Korea Town” so there’s a lot of Korean food and grocery stores around.

The hotel doesn’t allow guests, which is slightly annoying, but also good because it cuts down on noise and I do feel a lot safer. You also leave your room keys at the reception before heading out, so you don’t have to worry about losing them (or if your friend has the keys and isn’t back at the hotel yet). With only 11 rooms in the whole place, the receptionists remember who you are.
My room was located on the first floor which I liked because there’s no elevator so I didn’t have to climb any stairs. I was worried at first, because there was a vending machine located outside my room, and I didn’t want people to gather around there and chit-chat really loudly. But nobody did, so I had 6 quiet nights.

The room itself has an interesting layout. You have to take off your shoes at the tiny porch area in your room, and then enter the living room, which has a flat screen TV, mini fridge, kettle and coffee table. There is a smaller room adjacent to the living room with a closet to store the futon and bedding, and has a clothes rack with hangers. You can choose to either lay out the futon in the living room or the other room, or both so that you really have 2 rooms.

The bathroom is made up of 3 sections, the toilet area, the mirror and sink area, and the bath area. But it’s all very cramped. The bath area is also kind of old, but it’s clean and like most Japanese homes, comes with the shower area and a bathtub. But the room also comes with the basic amenities such as shampoo, conditioner and soap (all Shiseido, so it’s pretty decent, unlike other hotels that give you low quality stuff that ruins your hair).

All in all, I have to say for the price (less than USD100 a night for 2 guests) and the location, Shin Okubo Sekitei was a good choice. It is a little old, but it’s very clean and cosy.

Room Tip: If you hate stairs, stay on the first floor. There's no elevator.

I stayed with my friend twice in this hotel and find it very value for money. It is 3min walk from Shinokubo and Okubo stations. Convenient stores and restuarants are nearby and the neighbourhood is pretty safe. The hotel is also quiet for sleeping at night.

For 3000 yen per pax, you get a double room with a traditional bed, a mini living room, a toilet and bath room. The room also comes with amenities like tv, fridge, toiletries and yukata and it is very clean. There is also a water dispenser with hot and cold water and free internet at level 1.

I would definitely stay there for my next trip to tokyo.

p/s: The toilet is very clean but has a bit stinky smell. If you are very particular, this hotel would not be a good choice.

Room Tip: There are 3 levels in the hotel and it does not come with a lift. For ladies, I would suggest to ta...
