“Classic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

I have been coming here for over 20 yrs now. The building of this restaurant was originally a large Sentou (communal bath house). That's why they are unusual looking large house with many rooms and very high sealing with windows near the top (for steam ventilation). This is the place I've gotten hooked on Tonkatsu years ago. There are many places that serves Tonkatsu and some are popular as well. I have tried those popular places and new places when I hear about them but yet still, for me, no one beat Maisen so far. If you order Tonkatsu only dish, it's a bit pricier as meat is very expensive in Japan to start with. But their pork are from their own firm in Kyushu where they raise particular breeds in their particular way. Meat is so tender, you can cut the meat with chopstick! It's absolutely worth it! And it's not only just their meat is superior, the way they cook them is very juicy, crispy and light, even they are deep flied dish. If you get one of those their Teishoku (set menu), you can get many different dish that includes small tonkatsu are a great value. They give you free okawari (another bowl of) rice and cabbage if you ask them. I'll keep going here as long as they keep serving excellent & good value food like they always has been.

“Worthy of the Title Best Tonkatsu in Tokyo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

Amazing tonkatsu! We were researching which restaurant in Tokyo serves the best tonkatsu, and we kept on seeing Maisen in the results. Lonely Planet book on Tokyo also recommends this place, so we decided to try it out. Definitely worth the trip to Omotesando for this!! :D

“Oishii!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

Delicious tonkatsu! We had the kurobuta and the okonomi-zen set. Both were amazing. The kurbobuta comes with its own special tonkatsu sauce. Go early for lunch and avoid the lines.

“great value for money in Tokyo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2011 via mobile

Highly recommended, especially for the crispy pork cutlet. The food is excellent and the ambiance is ok. The place can be reached in ten minutes walking from the metro station of Omote-Sando.
A full set menu can be had with less than 12 E. But why a small beer costs 6 E??
Do not miss the chance if you are. Tokyo on a limited budget.

“Really Really Good Pork Tonkatsu”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2011

This place is an old bath house but that is not why you come here, the service is efficient and they also speak a little english, but that is not why you come here, they even have english menus but thats not why you come here. You go to Maisen for the Pork

The delicious Kurobota Pork, deep friend a crispy fluffy golden, inside is a juicy tender marbled piece of heaven. When combined with the special sauce you have got the perfect piece of pork.

Order the set menu enjoy the rice and salad etc, But there is only one star of this restaurant and its all about the Tonkatsu.....mmmmm pork

I dont remember how much it costs cause I was in a happy place after the meal,a happy blissful place but like most of Tokyo dont think it was cheap.
