“Good option for Shibuya area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of a 3 week holiday around Japan. Chose it for its TA reviews and proximity to Shibuya. We weren't disappointed. The hotel has a funky and boutique feel. It is small but has good facilities. It's looking a bit tired, it probably needs a refresh, but the room we had was a good size for Japan with a separate toilet and spacious shower room with a nice overhead shower and a bath. The bed was king size and comfortable. There was a small lounge suite in the room also. We paid about AUD190 per night via Japanican. Given the size of the room, the standard and the location we felt this was good value for money. The rate included breakfast for the two of us. The staff were very helpful. Shibuya is a great area with good access to other parts of Tokyo via JR and Metro rail lines. It is only one stop or a comfortable stroll from Harajuku which is another very interesting and fun area to explore. No hesitation in recommending Shibuya Granbell Hotel.

I stayed here for two nights before leaving Tokyo and it was initially quite a shock to see the tiny single room - the smallest I'd ever stayed in - but it was a great deal and just fine for the short stay. I might have felt differently if the weather was poor and had to stay inside, but that was not the case. The small hotel has two entrances and is easy to find, a few minutes walk from the Shibuya police station and a very large luxury hotel - The Cerulean Tower - which is handy because the express bus to and from Narita stops there. The room included breakfast which was more like brunch food. The in-house restaurant makes excellent pizza. There are tons of great restaurants in the area and Shibuya itself is a great place to hang for a few days - lots of really interesting shops and great people watching. Close to the subway and parks, and an easy walk to other neighbourhoods. The staff were very good, and helpful with directions. There's an excellent self-laundry about a five-minute walk from the hotel that's easy to use...just bring change. My only complaint is that the free wi-fi was limited to the lobby. It would have been nice to have it in the rooms.

We booked this hotel based on recommendations on Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet and a few design guides. I have no idea how this hotel gets the ratings it does. We checked in to a deluxe room and were shocked at how dirty it was. The linen/towels were fine but everything else was filthy. The bathroom was full of hairs, mold, small pieces of rubbish. The main living area had a moldy ceiling, marks all over the walls, dust/grime on all surfaces, moldy coffee machine, junk in wardrobe. We complained and they moved us to a suite with the spiral stair case. Its obviously fabulous in terms of design, but was equally dirty and so run down. There was what looked like coke sprays on the columns, mold on all the curtains, disgusting bathroom. Hotel lift was the same - filthy carpet, greasy marks, hairs stuck in joinery!? So even though it was a huge upgrade we just couldn't tolerate it and left. The girls at the desk were very helpful and happily refunded our prepayment - so the service in that sense was good. This hotel was totally at odds with our normal experience of Japan where everything is so clean and well looked after, even the smallest and cheapest hotels. We ended up checking into the Cerulean Towers as it was so close and had availability. It was a boring 5* business hotel, but we so appreciated the comfortable and clean rooms after such a disappointment!

This hotel is a great find - if not slightly tricky to find for the weary traveller negotiating their way across Shibuya. Actually, if you take the Airport Limousine the hotel is actually closer to the Cerulean Tower Tokyo Hotel stop than the Shibuya Mark City Building. And like everywhere in Japan - look up! While the entrance is sort of discreet the name of the hotel is clearly displayed on the side of the building.

I stayed in an Annex single which is amply big enough for 1 person. There's not a lot of standing room but the bed is a big double and very comfortable and the bathroom is a great size with one of the best showers I've every had. And if you feel a bit modest about the see through walls in the bathroom you can always pull the curtains.

My friends (with one child) stayed in a premier twin room which was also a good sized room for the price.

The location is excellent with lots of great restaurants nearby and you are only a 5 min walk from Shibuya station which has access to most train lines in Tokyo.

Some people may not like the slightly dark interior of the hallways which makes it feel like a nightclub but I think it has been done really tastefully and gives it a certain 'edgy' style.

Staff also really helpful with adequate english.

Would definitely stay there again - now that I know where it is!

Room Tip: Annex rooms possible have a better view over the city.

Me & my husband booked 2 nights, to be paid once we go to the hotel. However we couldn't come back to Shibuya on the 1st night as we were stuck in Hiroshima that evening ( we didn't know that trains don't run from Hiroshima-Tokyo the whole night) We were sad because we thought we still had to pay for the 1st night because it was a very short notice cancellation that we made around 8.00 pm that night. But when we explained it over the phone, the staff very politely said that they will not take money from us for the 1st night, which was so nice (irrespective of their policy where they can charge some amount for short notice cancellation) We were extremely happy & surprised to see how good they were where as in most of the other countries it's only about making money. I think this is exactly what a tourist/traveler wants in a hotel because you never know when you are going to miss transport/when you are unable to stay the night at the hotel for an unforeseen reason.
Also the staff gave us a lot of information/directions on where to go, allowed us to keep our luggage as much as we want before checked in/after checked out. There were English speaking staff as well.
Hotel is situated in a good spot which is walking distance to all big shopping centres and had access to public transport. Hotel rooms looked very nice too, clean, nicely decorated, comfortable beds. Breaky we had at their restaurant was yummy as well. Overall we had a comfortable night (free from cigarette smoke smell like in most of the other hotels in Japan even though it said non smoking)

Booked a Premier Double Room for 2 people.

The biggest plus for the hotel is the location in Shibuya. A five to six minute walk to the Shibuya JR Line entrance, an additional minute to three for the different subway line entrances and to Shibuya crossing. Restaurants and convenience and drug stores within a 1-2 block radius of the hotel for ease, or all you have to do is walk to the main Shibuya area.

The room itself was not good, ceiling had mold/mildew on it. Staff cleaned it with some disinfectant when I went down to explain the problem.

Room is small, as advertised, but for the price and location, is what you could expect. Would be a good hotel if you're just looking for a launching off point and don't plan to be in the room except to sleep.

Free wi fi is in the lobby.

The Granbell hotel is great for budget travelers to Tokyo. The staff is great and helpful and everything worked fine (elevators, internet, etc). The room was tiny, but of course, everything is tiny in Tokyo unless you pay a great amount of money.
Location is fantastic, 3 blocks away from Shibuya station, meaning that you'll access almost everything with just one train.
Tip: Getting to the hotel is kind of tricky from Shibuya, use the map they provide on their website and look for the little bar in street, then look towards the iiner part of the block and you'll see the big brown door.
