There are two Tokyu Stay's in Shibuya and this one is the renovated one. Some of the negative reviews here are simply due to wrong expectations. This is a business hotel, so if yo are vacationing with a girl/boyfriend, romance is pretty far from this place. Actually, in a way it's not, because a few blocks from the hotel, there's clubs and lots of love hotels!
The price/quality ratio at Tokyu Stay is really good for Tokyo. Internet access is free and there's also breakfast. The breakfast is pretty horrible after a few days, but at least there's okay coffee to be had. The other Toky Stay in Shibuya (Shin-Minamiguchi) offers breakfast in the Jonathan's restaurant which is even worse - it offers horrible approximations of western breakfasts.
The Tokuy Stay hotels are a business-hotel chain and the staff speaks hardly any English. They are not rude, they just dont speak English. Now, if you are in town for business and want to stay in a great location in Shibuya, easy to access, yet quiet, this is a great place. You dont have to dress up fancy to go into the lobby and things like toiletries and drinks are available in the lobby from vending machines. Toiletry stuff is free.
I stayed in a double room, which was okay in terms of size for what you can get in Tokyo. The only problem is that there's hardly any closet space to store your clothes. The place has been renovated in the last few years, so the beds are really comfy and the decor, while yes, basic and a bit bleak, is functional. The work desk is actually comfortable and was spacious enough for two people to use at the same time and the chairs are okay. For work, this place is more than fine.
Yes, oddly, if you stay longer than six days, the room gets cleaned only once a week, but if you stay for less time than that, you get new towels and cleaning every day. Weird. Anyway, I recommend bringing your own towel since the towels at every Tokyu Stay I've been at are super small and thin...
We had fully working, free wifi throughout our stay, so I'm not sure what the complaints are about, probably weaker signal on some floors. We stayed on the sixth floor and had no issues. Ethernet connection is always available and works well.
The hotel is superbly located. You just walk up for about 6 minutes from the Shibuya crossing (Hachiko exit) and get to the hotel. Just next to the hotel, there's awesome restaurants like Evans and the superb Meri Principessa pizzeria, plus a 24-hour convenience store. The bars and nightlife of Shibuya are minutes away. Yet it's completely quiet in the hotel block.
Set your expectations right and you will be very happy with Tokyu Stay Shibuya.
