“A really good team night out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013 via mobile

For 40 plus people we had a stream of delicious Japanese food, copious variations on the theme of alcoholic beverage and attentive service that kept everything flowing.

The atmosphere is really buzzing in there and the whole place has a feeling of real vibrancy and liveliness. We enjoyed the occasional way the waiters bellow at each other across the room and left well fed, happy and with good memories. I wasn't paying so have no idea on VFM.

“It's the show that you get ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

Well, maybe not an actual show in the sense of a Las Vegas show, but Gonpachi completely unlike most Japanese restaurants. A huge restaurant, a showy setup, celebrity photos, English menus, English-speaking wait staff, a restaurant half-filled with tourists and so on. The menu is less quintessentially Japanese, so if it's your first time in Japan, and you would like to dip your toes in Japanese dining without jumping into the deep end of the pool, Gonpachi could be a good choice.

However, much better food can be had elsewhere for less, and enjoyed in quieter surroundings. And the default beer choice is not on par with most restaurants' standard Sapporo and Kirin offerings. On the other hand, Gonpachi's prices are quite reasonable and it won't blow your budget.

Do it once for the experience, see it, and then look for quality food elsewhere.

“Good for atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

Loved the atmosphere at Gonpachi, food wise- not that great. We tried the tofu, sushi, sashimi, robata, soba and the house salad. Loved the tofu, for the robata- go for the foie gras with balsamic and strawberries (the best!) Soba was very average even though they are meant to be very famous for it, liked that you could see the chef making it right by the entrance though. Overall a great place for atmosphere but otherwise very average.

“All About Atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

This foreigner-made-popular restaurant is rumored to have been the inspiration for the Crazy 88 scene in Kill Bill. Upon entering the main floor, visitors familiar with the movie will instantly fall in love. Reservations are strongly recommended as it is so popular, especially with the ex-patriot community. Everything from sweet omelettes and vegetable jelly to fish and wagyu steak is served. The food will appeal to both the eye and the palate. All kinds of drink are available too. The price pays for very good food but it also pays for the atmosphere. Expect to drop $50 a person or more for a great time.

“Going Going gone Gonpachi”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

I have been frequenting Gonpachi for the last 7 years and have seen the changes. If this is your first visit to Japan and Tokyo this is a must stop eatery. It will give you a good cross section of what Japanese Robata grill food is (kushiyaki, on a stick cooked over charcol) with a western influence. The atmosphere is lively and the service is good. The food though has lost some of its quality over the years but is still reasonably good. Average cost for a full dinner and drinks is $50-70 usd
Try the signature specialties they are great espesiallly the seared foie gras with strawberries and a balsalmic reduction sauce.
There are many far superior kushiyaki restaurants to try in Tokyo you will find them on the small off streets near the larger train stations. But...
Be prepared to suck down smoke at these places as most places are geared for after work meeting places sitting at the bar in front of the grill and having drinks .
