“Grand Old Hotel - in the finest traditions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

We stayed 6 nights - early April for Cherry Blossom. There is a shuttle to the MTR Station - Shinagawa but it is only a 5 minute walk out the back gate (we never used the shuttle). As of the 1st April 2014 - they now provide free Wifi in the room - signal strength and speed were very good. The breakfast in the Patio Restaurant is very good & reasonable value. We had a room with City View - looking at Tokyo Tower - very good. We only had 1 complaint which we did mention to Guest Relations - that was that there was a grate over a drain on the side of the carpark that was bent - everytime a car, bus, taxi, truck etc... ran over it, you go Bang, Bang - this was so load it kept us awake - If they could replace the grate on the drain - they would have earned an Excellent. For this location we can visit everywhere - Shinagawa is a main station for the Shinkansen, it is also on the Yamanote Line - the main loop line in Tokyo
1 ticket to get on and off at any of the 29 stations is Y140 or a day pass to get on and off as often as you like is Y750.
The Tokyo Morning Television Show was doing the weather in the garden behind the hotel because of the Cherry Blossom trees - they are spectacular.
The Limousine Bus from Narita was at least 1.5hrs - so be prepared for that.
But it was a great location and if we go back to Tokyo we will stay here again.

From the airport you can purchase a "limo bus" ticket that will take you straight to the hotel (around 1.0 - 1.5hrs) and you get a very gracious welcome and efficient check-in. The rooms are smaller as expected for Japan but really comfortable and with all the amenities except a minibar (fridge is there but empty). However a quick walk through the garden to the sister hotel (New Grand Prince) and you will find a 24/7 shop where you can stock on snacks and drinks for your stay. I was lucky enough to be at the hotel during the bloom of the Cherry Blossom Trees and the Japanese garden is stunningly beautiful, especially at night when it is all lit up.
As I was there on business and in Tokyo everyone takes the train it was nice and convenient as there is a station at the bottom of the hill which made it convenient to go to work (mind you the hill looks very steep when you come back in the evening :-). Breakfast is great with a huge variety to choose from and very friendly staff who all speak English so communication is easy in the hotel. If you cannot decide what you want for dinner and where to go I highly recommend you discuss any ideas with the head concierge who will not only recommend but will even book a table for you (if you want to eat outside of the hotel)

Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: It is far enough away from the main road that any room is okay.

Too bad we only spent 1 night at this hotel and checked out early in the morning to catch the first train to Narita from Shinagawa. We would love to spend more time to explore the hotel though. The room is big for Japanese standard. Our room is facing the city and the view of Tokyo Tower is magnificent. Check-in was smooth although the receptionist didn't even smile. We were escorted to our room by a very friendly staff who answers all our questions and needs. The garden at the back of the hotel is very relaxing. A walk to Shinagawa Station could take between 10 to 15 minutes but they provide shuttle bus to all Prince hotels in the vicinity. Will definitely come back to this hotel.

Perfect business travel hotel, liked this better than Prince Shinagawa... rooms bigger, garden is nice etc. Maybe a bit older looking but clean, nice.. all in order. WIFI is free, but you need to rent the modem.. 1000YEN / stay. No ironing board tah the room, must ask from the reception. Stuff is really friendly and helpful.

My wife and I spent two nights at this hotel during a tour of Japan, and whilst the rooms could do with a make over, the public areas were fine. WI FI is only available in the very large foyer at the moment but this is about to change in April when it should be accessible in all rooms. The breakfast was OK, even if you are not keen on Japanese food at this time of day. Maybe a lack of fresh fruit, however, this was the case all the hotels we stayed in during our tour. We ate in the Wakatake Tempura Restaurant one evening and had a delicious meal. As a hotel resident one got discount for some of the set meals, need to show room card, which worked out to be quite reasonable for a good authentic dinner. As for the rooms, yes, they are on the small side, but nearly all hotel rooms in Japan are small. A little research before travelling would have highlighted this fact. What little contact I had with reception staff was fine, as was with the restaurant waiters and concierge.

My family stayed here for 4 days and 3 nights and we were treated like a prince (not king) and princess (not queen) simply because my expectations is more on the High end, the name being Grand Prince nonetheless our vacation became memorable because of the "all in one" concept of this hotel. Meaning, there is already a typical Japanese koi garden at the back of the hotel where kids can play and wander the greeneries after a long day's tour, a shuttle bus every 15 minutes that leads you to Shinagawa MTR station since the hotel is situated along the residential hill side village of takanawa, a good breakfast buffet at passion restaurant, a fast complimentary Wifi at the hotel lobby (room has a fee), and a decent room (not grand) in terms of comfortable beds but a typical outdated furnishing (tube TV, no espresso machine, flat iron for pressing and fridge supplies) which I think is typical to a timeless business hotel like this not to mention the fabulous toilet seats (japanese standard push button bidet) . Crib is provided for my infant upon request and so is the sofa bed and the bell captain at the reception is very much willing to help for anything you ask from the tours, to transportation and food. For tourist with a family in tow, we never got lost when we tried going to Shibuya with the able assistance of the bell captain. If you want a fast food, french fries and burger for kids are within reach also in nearby Hollywood Mall. The downside of the hotel is the noise coming from the lift since we were given a room near to the elevator and housekeeping room but just fine since we were all tired after a long day's tour. Also, the racist young driver of the shuttle which initially barred us in the bus at MTR station but later gave in after showing that we are hotel guests (old driver is very polite btw) and the lack of english newspaper which is complimentary to most hotels provided every morning. Shuttle by the way runs from 8am to 945pm thus if you are coming from a late flight or tour, walking uphill is a challenge or a taxi is viable option.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the garden are fantastic but choose the one far from the lift as it becomes noisy durin...

Good:
Nice clean rooms
Friendly staff (typical for Japan)
Excellent breakfast
Quiet

Not so Good
If you pay for breakfast - a little expensive
Off the track...a 10 to 15 minute walk to train station. They have a shuttle but if you are out late (past 10PM) you must take taxi (less than 1000Yen) if you do not want to walk.

I have been to many hotels in Japan and this is one of the better ones (Business Travel). I just wish it was closer to the main strip so I did not have to use shuttle or taxi. Other hotels in area seem less relaxed but are in the middle of the main areas so you just walk out hotel while this one requires a little ride/walk to get to the shopping and places to eat.

Room Tip: Every room I have had as been good. I have stayed in this hotel three times for a total of about 15...
