“Great Hotel with lovely views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

The Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa is a great hotel within 10 minutes walking distance of Shinagawa Station. It is served by the airport limosine bus which makes it easy to reach from the airport. While the walk maybe considered long by some, it allows you to walk through some very nice scenery which during the Spring season is wonderful. The rooms in the hotel are very large by Japanese standards which enables you to relax during your stay. Depending on the room that you have booked you can see either a view of Tokyo, including the Tokyo Tower & Skytree or a view of the Garden which is very nice indeed. Staff are very friendly in the Hotel and will try their best to speak to guests in English. However, I would advise you learn a little Japanese before you go to Japan as it makes the experience a whole lot more enjoyable. There are several facilities near the hotel including the Aquarium, Cinema and a small eatery plaza. the rooms are clean, in some rooms the walls are slightly thin but it was no bother to us.

Room Tip: Garden view rooms are well worth it. Learn some Japanese

This hotel is not that close to the train station. There is another Takanawa Prince hotel which may be confusing for some. Better check before you get there as it can be a bit of a walk with luggage.

My biggest complaint is that you find yourself planning your day around the shuttle bus, which really shouldn't be the case on your holiday. You need to catch a shuttle bus to get to the hotel. You have to wait in line for the bus at the train station and when the bus arrives it is just a mad rush for seats as the bus is small. I don't mind walking uphill, but that was just ridiculous. The last bus is also at 8:00pm or 8:30pm. So for some people who think it is a waste of money to spend 710yen (can be spent on sushi instead!) on a cab to take them the short distance uphill or if it is raining too heavily to walk uphill with all your bags, you need to get there is time.
Then catching the bus from the hotel requires a reservation. This shuttle also stops at 3 other hotels so be sure to book in advance and not the night before.
8pm is far too early to be stopping the shuttle bus, since a lot of shops only shut closer to 10pm. This has been communicated to the hotel but nothing has changed.

The room itself is clean. Unfortunately, we requested a non-smoking room but got a room on the smoking floor. The bell captain offered to send up a bottle of air freshener and suggested we open the window to air it out. This helped a bit.
There is enough space to have two large luggage open. It is more spacious than a few hotels in Tokyo. There is no WiFi in the room, only in the hotel. The connection is ok but wish a hotel that was charging me that much could provide WiFi in the rooms.
The bed is clean and they provide yukatas to use in the room, you will have to search the drawers for them. You can sign up for their 'green cleaning service' which is a decent idea, you get a 500yen coupon for choosing not to have your room cleaned each night.

In the middle of the night, there was a man shouting in the next room and the staff failed to handle the situation and he continued to shout throughout the night until early morning ( he got tired?). The air-con was a puzzle, even after putting it on the lowest setting it was still quite stuffy. Since it was raining at the time we couldn't open the window much. Even when the display said 23degs, it felt a lot warmer.

Overall, this is a much more expensive hotel which did not deliver. Breakfast was not included, and the hotel is pretty secluded unless you walk back downhill to the station which does have good food.

This was a last minute booking for me, if I had the option of early booking, this would not be on my short-list. This is more of a family style hotel or maybe for a wedding. I saw a few weddings held there. The garden was lovely and the koi pond was very serene.

rooms are not renovated since the hotel opened twenty years ago, it seems...sticky carpet, walls full with scratches, supersoft mattress, air con hardly to adjust, worst of all, could hear my neighbours all night long, and they weren't even loud...furthermore, staff is very polite, but hardly understands english. all in all, a miserable stay, was supposed to stay ten days but checked out after the first night. what's on the bright side? well, not much, but the garden and the public spaces are quite nice.

Room Tip: no room! go somewhere else!

Good place to start visit tokyo. Rooms are functionals and outside there is a nice garden, a real corner of peace in one of the biggest cities in the world! Staff is very kind and helpful, but they don't speak a good english. Breakfast is not included and very expensive, so I walked outside every morning looking for bar or supermarket to get coffee and croissants!

There were another hotel with the same name, but it's called New Grand Prince Takanawa and we went to the wrong hotel. Arrived too late at night and had to drag 4 heavy luggage to get to the hotel in the cold as there were no more free shuttle bus. When we arrive we are requested to go to our hotel which is another 3 mins walk through the garden. Checked in and they gave us a double room instead of twin bed which we have booked. Called the receptionist and says the rooms are fully booked and refuse to give us an upgrade. Very disappointing but we have no choice but to wait for 2 days before they have a twin room for us. Hotel is outdated and room is quite small.

Has no wifi in the room and has to go to the lobby to utilize the free wifi connection but it's poor and we hardly get the connections. Free shuttle bus every 30 minutes but advance booking is required. The last bus is at 8.30pm so most likey you'll miss the last bus and has to take a taxi back to the hotel which will costs you around 700yen for the short trip. Else you will need to walk uphill about 10 mins. Overall I'm okay with the stay but will consider going to another hotel instead.

Comfortable and clean room, good size, some small signs of wear. Convenient location if you can stand 5 minutes walk to Shinagawa station. The hotel is on a hill, so the way back could be annoying but they have a bus service from/to the station if you ask. Nice garden and good bars and restaurants. Free wifi in public areas and in the room if you rent a router (1000 JPY)

It's a little far from the JR station, but not too far. You can skip walking up the hill if you enter through the sister hotel. You can take the stairs or elevator through that hotel, and then walk through the central garden. It's quite a nice little stroll, especially if it isn't raining. Shinagawa station, however, has the BEST food of the subway stations we visited. It has great bentos, so be sure to check those out. It also is a central hub, so you can get to Kyoto or Osaka from there.

The hotel itself is small but comfortable. Everything was clean and there were no odors in the room. The front desk was fairly helpful, but they didn't speak English very well. They have a money exchange in the lobby, and wired internet in the rooms.

All in all, it was a pretty good hotel.
