This was our first visit to Japan. We went there with our two adult sons on a family vacation. We booked two rooms at the Dai-ichi Hotel Tokyo. The location was great. It was just a few steps from the Shimbashi station. There are several subway lines that stop at Shimbashi. Shimbashi is also only two stations away from the main Tokyo station. There is even an underground tunnel from the hotel's basement that connects to the station. The hotel is also only a 5-10 minute walk from Ginza, an area famous for shopping (mostly upscale stores) and restaurants. For those of you who have kids that grew up on McDonald's, there is one just down the road from the hotel. There is also convenience store from across the hotel and a 7-Eleven just around the corner from the hotel. The hotel itself is elegant. The lobby is spacious with amply seating areas. The rooms are tastefully furnished and decorated. We found the rooms surprisingly roomy given what we heard about Tokyo. The bathroom was spacious with room for a tub and shower--this is the first hotel we ever stayed at that had both. The rooms are kept meticulously clean--almost to a fault. This is not surprising as cleanliness is deeply ingrained in the Japanese culture as we came to find out. This is visible everywhere--in the subway stations, on the streets, etc. Japan is an amazingly clean place. The hotel staff was extremely courteous, respectful, and professional. We can't say enough things about their concierge. We dealt with two in specific. We relied on them to suggest places of interest to visit, directions, and bombarded them with all sorts of questions. They were very patient and went the extra mile. On one occasion we asked about directions to a restaurant we wanted to visit. The concierge gave us directions but called to make sure the restaurant was open and as it turned out they were closed that day saving us the aggravation of a wasted trip. The concierge staff also helped us with arranging a package trip (Hotel + train) to Kyoto which we thoroughly enjoyed.

If you are travelling for the first time to Tokyo you will find the Dai Ichi Hotel with a very convenient location. It is very close to the metro station, to the Ginza trendy shops and the Airport Limusine service can take you directly to the Hotel. Service is very good and the staff is always trying their best to help you. I would stay here again.

Having just finished a four night stay at the Mandarin in Nihombashii we moved to the Shimbashi Dai Ichi to join friends for the final two nights. I will start by stating I grew up in Japan, speak Japanese and visit the country every month from my home in HK. I was well acquainted with the Dai Ichi having stayed here over a decade ago when the Imperial Hotel was full. I regret to inform you this hotel has declined immensely, one reason why it is no longer a member of the LHW. The staff are indifferent, the lounge is like some cheap hooker pick up bar and the rooms are out dated, not that clean and in the two days I stayed room service failed to clean the room and I had to call several times to get service. Most annoyingly, staff try to hide behind the 'I don't speak english' excuse only to be embarrassed when I switch to Japanese (I am caucasian). The location of the hotel is its only redeeming feature but I would urge anyone to choose the Imperial over the Dai Ichi. This hotel is not well run, there is no attention to detail and the cleanliness of the rooms is questionable. We stayed on the 20th floor, supposedely a Premier Floor but with service that is totally below par. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL.

hats off to Dai-Ichi hotel. The service upon entering the lobby was impeccable. The lobby was very well appointed and so were the rooms. And the staff was very attentive throughout our stay. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Conveniently located to a subway. The only downside was no BBC or CNN on the TV - but that was OK. They delivered a complimentary newspaper each day so we could keep up on the news.

I have been to Tokyo several times and usually stay at the 5-star hotels (Westin, for example). In this last trip, I realized that I was wasting my money. For the tourist who wants to see the city of Tokyo or the business traveler who has to shuffle between areas in Tokyo, the Dai-ichi is the perfect location. About a one-minute walk from Shimbashi station, you can get to most central Tokyo stations in 20-30 minutes maximum (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo, etc). Shimbashi is adjacent to Ginza if you are looking for high-end shops. It is also surrounded by more reasonable restaurants and shops.

The hotel itself has free internet access, reasonably priced dry cleaning, and pretty good service all around. The reason I give 3 stars for service is that the hotel overall lacks good restaurants and travel/concierge service of quality you would find in the highest-end Tokyo hotels. Otherwise, the standard room that I booked is very spacious with shower and separate tub, king bed with soft sheets and comfortable pillows, and good natural lighting even on a cloudy day. My room was on the side near the train tracks (Some reviews said this was problematic)--because the trains run only until about midnight, I did not find this to be an issue. During the day, you can hear the trains but only faintly.
