This was our first visit to Japan. We went there with our two adult sons on a family vacation. We booked two rooms at the Dai-ichi Hotel Tokyo. The location was great. It was just a few steps from the Shimbashi station. There are several subway lines that stop at Shimbashi. Shimbashi is also only two stations away from the main Tokyo station. There is even an underground tunnel from the hotel's basement that connects to the station. The hotel is also only a 5-10 minute walk from Ginza, an area famous for shopping (mostly upscale stores) and restaurants. For those of you who have kids that grew up on McDonald's, there is one just down the road from the hotel. There is also convenience store from across the hotel and a 7-Eleven just around the corner from the hotel. The hotel itself is elegant. The lobby is spacious with amply seating areas. The rooms are tastefully furnished and decorated. We found the rooms surprisingly roomy given what we heard about Tokyo. The bathroom was spacious with room for a tub and shower--this is the first hotel we ever stayed at that had both. The rooms are kept meticulously clean--almost to a fault. This is not surprising as cleanliness is deeply ingrained in the Japanese culture as we came to find out. This is visible everywhere--in the subway stations, on the streets, etc. Japan is an amazingly clean place. The hotel staff was extremely courteous, respectful, and professional. We can't say enough things about their concierge. We dealt with two in specific. We relied on them to suggest places of interest to visit, directions, and bombarded them with all sorts of questions. They were very patient and went the extra mile. On one occasion we asked about directions to a restaurant we wanted to visit. The concierge gave us directions but called to make sure the restaurant was open and as it turned out they were closed that day saving us the aggravation of a wasted trip. The concierge staff also helped us with arranging a package trip (Hotel + train) to Kyoto which we thoroughly enjoyed.
