The Asia Center of Japan was the cheapest 3 star hotel we found anywhere on the Internet. No doubt there are better, fancier hotels in Tokyo, but a lot more expensive too, or not so well located. Bearing this in mind, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to come back.
Our room was a fairly good size, bright and airy, perhaps a little bland in terms of interior design but otherwise comfortable and blissfully quiet. Mind you, the bathroom was small, very small. Our room rate included breakfast, which we really enjoyed. The buffet caters for both Japanese (miso soup, fish, rice, etc) and Western guests (croissants, eggs, bacon, sausages, etc).
The hotel is located in Akasaka, a quiet residential area north of Roppongi. There are several convenience stores nearby, and the newly opened Tokyo Midtown shopping mall is within easy walking distance from the hotel, halfway along the road to Roppongi.
To reach the hotel from Tokyo Central Station by subway, take the Marunouchi (red) line then change to the Ginza (yellow) line at Akasaka-Mitsuke. Get off at Aoyama-Itchome station exit #4. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from here.
For those holding a valid Japan Rail pass, the nearest JR station is Shinanomachi, a 20 minute walk from the hotel. Virtually all points of interest in Tokyo are near a station served by the JR lines that cross the city: the Yamanote line, the Chuo line and the Sobu line. Just show your pass to the station guards and they will let you in and out for free.
