“Time capsule yes, but fabulous service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012 via mobile

Everything works. That's the key. It's flawless service. As long as you don't mind paying $200 ( not a typo) for breakfast for a family of five. French toast is about $40, but its good...... Seriously though everything is great, for our first time in Japan, this dated retro hotel makes your stay say. Close Access to Reoongii....
Worth the trip

Hotels in Japan take guest service to a tremendous level just for starters. The Okura is no exception and well renowned as still one of the best in Tokyo. Though older (say classic) in design and decoration, the standard remains very high and the hotel ambience more peaceful and relaxing after a day in Tokyo than some other modern hotels. Staff are always most helpful, location is central enough and only a short taxi ride to most areas of interest or business. One additional plus - all taxi drivers know the hotel name straight off!

This hotel is located across from the American Embassy, which is nice when you're so far from home. It's well run, people are friendly and within walking distance to the subway.
Breakfast is excellent but drinks at the hotel bar are crazy expensive... Nearly $20 per drink?! One is more than enough at that price (and its smokey).
Toilets are to die for.... Ya, that's what I said.... You'll have to go to find out more!

I stayed here for business and couldn't have been more pleased. Its only about 2-3 KM away from the Imperial Palace and right next door to the embassy.

Like with most Japanese hotels, the staff bend over backwards to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The restaurants within the hotel are all great (we ate at 3 or 4 of them).

The decor and architecture are my favorite. Yes, its a bit dated, but it is 'retro-cool' in my mind as it does feel like a Bond movie from the 70s.

Across the parking lot from the hotel is nice little museum which is worth spending an hour or so in as well.

Room Tip: They are all pretty good, but higher floors have a slightly better view.

I had a lovely stay (business purposes) and the location is good too. It has to be said though that this hotel is probably had it's heyday. I cannot fault them on their service, typically Japanese, very polite and friendly. I thought breakfast was hopelessly overpriced for the quality and selection available. If you are into 60's/70's Tokyo style, this will be your heaven.

This was my second trip to the Okura in the past twelve months and again it was enjoyable. I arrvied early so used the gym facilities to shower prior to checking into my room later in the day.The rooms themselves are basic by comparison with some other 5 star hotels I have stayed at in Tokyo such as the Conrad and Mandarin Oriental; and are traditional/dated in terms of decor. But they are clean, reasonably spacious, have all the amenities a business traveller needs/wants given they aren't spending that much time in the room anyway.

The restaurant selection is vast and overall, I really enjoy the hotel given its proximity to my office in Tokyo, and more than that, the real sense of history one has walking through the halls. Business travel can be quite dull these days so a trip to the Okura has a lost element of charm and history in it that many other hotels I stay in lack. And even though its a very large hotel, it has a real homely feel about it.

I first stayed in the Okura in 1987 and am very pleased that it has not changed one bit. The rooms have been subtlely updated but it still has the 1960's look and feel which is refreshing in these days of cookie cutter ultra modern attempts to make one feel at home. It is great to step out of the hustle and bustle of Tokyo into this den of tranquility and terrific service. Not only are the staff friendly, they fall all over themselves to be helpful - the hardest thing is to convince one of the many bell staff that you want to carry your own bag. There are two parts to the hotel and the passage from the Main to the South wing is a bit of a labyrinth. Ironically, if one goes between the two wings outdoors, it is less distance and far less confusing. Also sometimes security can be tight as it is next door to the U.S. Embassy. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms large with great amenities - I especially like the soap. The soap reminds me of a story from my stay in 1988 which shows what kind of sevice one can expect. I phoned their gift shop to ask if I could purchase some bars of their soap to take home with me. There was hesitation at the other end of the line and then I was put on hold. Someone came on who asked what I wanted and feeling peeved that I seemed to be getting the run-around, repeated my questions. The person asked how many bars i wanted and I replied that 6 would be fine. They then told me to wait a few minutes and hung up. I thought this a little strange and was about to phone back when there came a knock at the door. There stood a chamber maid, bowing to me, offering a basket with six bars of their soap placed artfully in a towel that had been origamied into the shape of a swan. Wow! Now that is service. Love this hotel.

Room Tip: I prefer the rooms in the main building but you really cannot go wrong.
