“Fantastic varieties of tonkatsu!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

This restaurant is located a far way from the nearest station (Nogizaka) so be prepared for a 15 minute walk from the station. It is located on a side street parallel to the main road leading to the nearby park/cemetery.

Once you've found the place you will be amazed. You can pick and choose a particular type of pork cut/type depending on your preference. Prices range from 1,900 yen to 3,800 yen depending on cut. Standard size is 150g and deluxe is 250g. Included in the price is all you can eat rice and salad. They have an English menu available so ask for it if you don't speak Japanese. The quality of the tonkatsu is sensational and this is definitely worth a visit if you are in Tokyo and are visiting nearby Roppongi.

“The one and only one”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2014

Everyone recommended me the famous Maisen, but it is a chain restaurant. So I was looking for a more authentic restaurant, and I found Butagumi on the web. This restaurant is a real gem. It is not far from Roppongi and Shibuya station.
About the meat: it is juicy, and you can choose between different porks. And you have free refill for cabbage and rice, which is a good point. And the service is as usual in Japan very delicate and careful.
If there is only one restaurant of tonkatsu to try, it would be this one. They accept reservation and i went there with a friend but it would have been cool for couples dating. I really appreciated the tea at the end of the meal.
Price: not that pricey for the quality of the meat in Tokyo. Compared to other places, it is a good deal.

“Best Tonkatsu Ever!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

Been coming here for the past 5 years and i must say it's the best tonkatsu ever. Expect the price to be a lot higher than you usual tonkatsu joint and its mainly because of the kinds and quality of pork that they serve thats been sourced all over the different prefectures in Japan. Iberico pork from Spain is also sometimes in the menu. Their mozzarella appetizer and salads are also very good. Concise menu that show you that pork is the star in this restaurant. Eat all you can cabbage, rice and soup is a plus. Service is very good. Only minus for me is they don't serve Coca cola and most good cuts or kinds of pork are always out of stock. The place is not the easiest to find if not for me having gone there a lot. This is a must stop for me and my wife whenever im in Tokyo. Delicious!!

“Always come here for the best tonkatsu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

We have been coming to Buta Gumi for years every time we are in Tokyo. Many different cuts of varieties of pork from quite expensive to quite reasonable. All delicious. The aka-dashi miso with little pippies is delicious and a second serving is free as is the finely shredded cabbage. The waitress advises you to have your first piece of tonkatsu with some salt before using the tonkatsu sauce on the second piece. Buta Gumi is housed in a very quaint traditional house which adds to the charm. Best to book if you can but I don't think any English is spoken. Otherwise turn up early at opening time at 6pm to get a table as it books out quickly and is a very small restaurant.
