What can I say. Prior to this trip, I'd given up on 5 star hotels, thinking all of them had impersonal, disinterested service and that the only thing they were interested in was squeezing your dollars out of you. Our stay at the Peninsula Tokyo changed my mind. Completely.
Everything and everyone was excellent. The front desk took seriously our dissatisfaction with our first room. The concierge desk dealt with (almost) all of our requests for help with restaurant bookings, maps for taxi drivers, directions to places, ticket bookings with great efficiency and capability. The spa has excellent facilities and service (I went for a second treatment because it was so good and I knew I'd get nothing like it back in London). The pool is spectacularly clean. The gym is well equipped (for a hotel). Room service is good. The room itself is magnificent - spacious beyond belief (especially for a big city), with a separate walk in closet and dressing room, a nice bath (that is separate from the WC), and with great technology that they've really thought about (they have their own R&D division working out how to make guests feel more comfortable in the room - as a techie, I was impressed). Location is good for good restaurants.
Negatives were very, very few. (1) The Concierge desk is a bit overwhelmed - there is often a queue (because lots of people need help in a city with language barriers) and staff get very tired towards the end of the day. It really needs to be expanded. (2) The Hei Fung Terrace restaurant was really not impressive. This needs some work. (3) The website shouldn't really sell some of their rooms as 'Park View' rooms. In truth, the Deluxe Park View rooms are directly facing a large white office building, and the view of the park is at an angle to the side. You'll only get any kind of serious view of the park if you're as far West as possible in the corridor (or, if you want a view directly over the park, if you book a Suite). If you are booking a Deluxe Park View, ask for as high a floor as possible (it goes up to 22) and ask for, e.g., 2202 or 2203 (which are as far down the corridor as possible, closer to the park).
Highly recommend this hotel. I will be thinking about it with very pleasant memories and I'll definitely go back.
