I still laugh at how some Westerners expect large rooms when they stay at Japanese hotels. Though our room at Hotel Niwa was small by American standards, the room was spotless (and I mean spotless), and the service was impeccable. The design of the hotel and its rooms put you at ease upon arrival. It's the epitome of zen. The hotel was our refuge during our six-day visit to Tokyo - believe me, when you're in Tokyo for six straight days, you need a place to relax and meditate - and Hotel Niwa is the place to do it. The hotel is situated near some colleges, so great, affordable food is within walking distance. You won't have to worry about encountering tourist traps in the area. Suidobashi JR station is just 2-3 blocks away, so you have easy access to the rest of Tokyo. Having complimentary wifi in our room and throughout the hotel was a big plus as many Japanese hotels still have LAN wired internet in rooms - this is important for iPad users. The mezzanine level features a little workout room with a bike and treadmills, self-service laundry room, reading room with massage chairs, as well as a delightful outdoor deck with a small pond and well-manicured plants. Our stay at Hotel Niwa was money well spent. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Take a look at my photos to see what my stay was like.
