11 years ago, a Japanese friend recommended the Homeikan to me, when I first started taking groups of students studying Japanese in the New York City public high schools, to Tokyo. We've been back every year since. The hospitality offered to us by the Koike family, the owner/managers, and their staff, has been extraordinary.Mr. Kunio Koike lived in New Jersey for several years, and his English is excellent. More importantly, the care and concern we enjoyed every year was most impressive. The Homeikan is well situated; a short walk from the Marunouchi,Mita, and Oedo subway lines. It is also a short taxi ride from the Ueno terminal of the inexpensive and convenient Keisei Ueno train line, that offers express or local direct service from Narita International Airport. The rooms range in style and size, from the basic to sophisticated. The facilities are traditionally Japanese, so one shouldn't expect Hilton-like conditions.Instead. one enjoys an experience much more impressive! Our stay has truly been a taste of Japan. The breakfasts are Japanese , and thus are a unique experience that the students enjoy, although the food is not a typical American or European breakfast. When the students rate all their many experiences in Japan, their stay at the Homeikan is always among the top three. The prices are modest, and the rooms, especially the small Japanese suites, are elegantly spare and simple. The true luxury is the quality of service shown to guests. The rooms are heated and air conditioned, although the controls present a small challenge to a non Japanese speaking foreigner. However, the staff will willingly help with the controls, if one is patient. Don't expect English to be universally spoken here. However, communication has never been a problem since the staff is used to helping foreigners. I enthusiastically recommend the Homeikan because of our wonderful experiences over the past 10 years. Our stays have truly been an extraordinary taste of Japanese hospitality at its best, and we are returning for our 11th year this summer !!
