I have been to a lot of places in my life, but have never run into as many kindred spirits as I have at The Flying Scorpion. On my first trip to Costa Rica with friends that had been on several different occasions, we lucked out and had to move out from a house we were renting and into The Scorpion. Rossi and Amanda were completely ...accommodating and wound up moving other guests out of their big suite so that the 5 of us could be in the same room. The beds were great, the view was stunning, the waves were ours alone and we were in heaven; a room above a stocked bar and a 5-star restaurant!
I could write a review on the food alone, but I don't think that I could put into words how impressed I was; not on a Costa Rican level, but on a "Best-food-I've-had-in-my-life" level. We started our mornings with a breakfast, that came free with the room, of a typical Costa Rican breakfast ("Tipica") or pancakes, or regular breakfast dishes...my favorite...the plate of fresh fruit and the batidos (think Costa Rican Smoothie). The dinners were really where Rossi and the crew shined! We dined on steaks, fresh fish, steaks, giant shrimp, more steaks...do you sense a theme here? We actually ate them out of steaks over the course of a couple of days...when Rossi received a delivery of steaks that he didn't feel was up to par, he told us that they didn't meet his standards and that he wouldn't serve them. I was actually a bit more adventurous and wanted to try a sampling of everything on the menu; everything I had was just as good as anything that I had. Rossi's pizzas are amazing and, being Italian, his Italian food is fantastic! The shrimp in the white wine sauce was incredible. Marbeth, the kitchen chief, worked from early mornings until late, late nights making sure that everything lived up to her exacting standards; she ran a tight ship and I, for one, really appreciated it!
If you're looking for nightlife, then stay over in the Saint Theresa/Mal Pais area. San Miguel is a sleepy little town with amazing, amazing, amazing people...Guests, patrons and workers alike! There isn't a dance-party atmosphere, but, rather, a place where people know your name and want to hear about your travels and your life over a whole bottle of 7-year Flor de Cana. Again, I've never been in a place where I have met so many genuine, sweet, caring and kindred souls as The Flying Scorpion.
Rossi said it best, "Bad roads bring good people". Don't be one of the bad ones...whiners, complainers, and high-maintenance folk, stay in a 5-star resort in Saint Theresa, they ain't buying it in San Miguel!
